Thank you a lot! These little summaries are very helpful to keep in mind all the types and model...
Interesting video mate! Keep the great content coming.
Thank David!
Good video! 👍❤️
Very Nice list! I also love and use the Crane Song STC8 and the Pendulum OCL2. Some people prefer the ES8 over the OCL2 ( more of a limiter).
I have the Elysia Alpha. You definitely need a Vari Mu as well to go along side it. Its fast and punchy. You still need a slow glue compressor. I have a Fairman TMC for that. Yin and Yang.
The MBP is my final purchase to complete my studio

I've got a few outboard compressors, but my fave is my A-Designs Nail. It's awesome..Has a cool hard threshold feature you can use with the filter..really musical..I also love my SafeSound Stereo Toolbox, which you can't find anywhere any more..it does m/s and is always on my master bus
Ruben Tilgner is not only the founder of Elysia, but also the inventor of the Transient Designer when he was still working for SPL. I think all Elysia products are really amazing.
Man do I love the Knifs--Pure Mu as well.
I usually use Tegeler Schwerkraftmaschine on the mixbus. You can run it via a plugin so that’s nice. I also use a SSL classic.
For a next Q&A: what’s your favorite song/album (mix wise) and could you make a breakdown of it? Cheers!
So many dream machines, the design of the SPL is killer. I had a SPL Machine Head, used it on everything until it died and couldn't be repaired. The Neve Portico ticks so many boxes, would love to learn more about the analog stereo field manipulator. Cheers!
All compressors are best with there unique colors. I have MBP its awesome on everything. planning to buy Dangerous and Manley too.
Have you ever used Overstayer gear? Their modular unit seems right up your alley for color and saturation.
Very nice pieces of gear on this video! You have to try the GML 8900. It's worth every cent of the 5k (used)
Hopefully we live to see the day when mastering plugins are as good as hardware. We’re close but still not quite there IMO. I know most people today care more about the song than the gear.... but I still want my music mastered with outboard gear. There’s just a richness in the low end stereo depth that I’ve never heard with digital. Fingers crossed 🤞 there will be a day when computers can nail it! On a side note though... Why can’t Americans dress this cool? That shirt it so rad!
Neve MBP is really nice, I like the vertigo vsc3 also. its really the mercedes benz of the vca comps.

My boy in Tame Impala uses the Manley Vari Mu, and I was secretly hoping you'd mention it here lol
Nice collection but i think you´ve missed the "Magic Death Eye" and "Rockruepel" and maybe the "Dangerous Compressor" in your list.
How is the finalized plus for mastering could you do a review on that.
Thumbs up for MBP, Knif and Phoenix. Also, Stamchild is on the way.
I like Wes audio Dione compressor and Drawmer 1973,1976 sir.planning to buy
where are those links you promised I looked in your description but nowhere could I find them? Please help...
missing DW Fearn VT-7
I have to resubscribe every time I watch a video
No Manley Vari-Mu?! How could you?! Lol She’s my baby for mastering!
Speaking of Mastering..do you ever use your Drawmer 1973 for mastering since it's multiband? If not, why and what are you using instead?
@mixbustv
4 жыл бұрын
Rarely, I still don't understand why many are under the impression multiband compression is a must in mastering, it's not. It's something you use on very problematic mixes 90% of the time, but, that aside, yes I did use it few times and if I don't use that my new go-to is the PSP Oldtimer multiband (when I want color on multiband) or Waves LinMB, more rarely Ozone dynamics, or McDPS,
Rockruepel Comp.Two and Gyraf G-22.
I had decided to keep using my Alesia Alpha compressor (the plugin) and get to know it better. This video inspires me to keep with it, make it ones of those tools I know inside out, thanks.

If you can, get the original. It is an investment, but given the fact that it is simply the best mastering tool in this world, it's a bargain. I think I should do some KZread videos for plugin/hardware comparison, if I ever find the time. The plugin is surprisingly good, but as always, the clipping does not work too well, and it offers no convincing depth and stereo enhancements.

@@MFASonic I would love to see a proper level matched comparison. Of the plug-in and hardware.

I have a Dangerous Music Compressor that is designed to be a tracking, mixing and mastering unit - all-in-one. Although I know very little about mastering, I wonder if an all-in-one unit can attain similar results to the ones dedicated for mastering?
@mixbustv

Th dangerous is a clean transparent compressor, anything on the clean transparent will very rarely be "wrong" by nature, as it won't add much in the way of character or color, which in let's say 50% of the cases in mastering (if you have a good mix you're working one) it's a good thing. On the other hands, well, you don't have much in the way of color or enhancement. Nowadays there are units that are very versatile as in you can decide if and when to put the color on and dial in the amount. With that said, the dangerous is a great unit, it will do well for tracking and mastering, for mixing, I'd want something more spicy, but that's just me

MixbusTv Thank you so very much for having taken the time to read my comment, and even more so for having taken the time to explain it to me. It makes total sense to me to add all the coloration in the tracking/mixing steps and keep it all clear in mastering. This is all new to me but quite fascinating in terms of the possibilities. Your channel has been instrumental for me in trying to learn what’s required to create music that sounds professional - for that, I thank you!!

I feel like BAX EQ has perfect versatility for mixing or mastering, haven’t used Compressor though. I worry Dangerous Music gets lumped in with just being summing HW, naturally because it does tailor to analog summing on much of their gear, which can turn some off too the whole “ecosystem”. I get it. But they, imo, are about WAY more than just DACS/Monitoring/Summing. Even their first A/D Converter is a great piece of equipment, whether you dig transformers or not, it’s hard to avoid them. Whether it’s Neve or any other big name brand. Dangerous has always produced high quality, without much hassle, and cost not cheap, but not over the top, on the 4 units I have.
I was surprised you didn't mention the manley vari mu...maybe that's an old hat, but it seems like that is always in a mastering rig...I think the top of the line mastering version with all the bells, mods and whistles is like 7 grand, but I may be way off. I saw it on reverb for that price...anyway, cool video. Thanks for taking the time

Gotcha...makes sense...Thank you for taking the time
Apart from that I haven't heard of most of these units like EVER, being the bedroom producer that I am, and, that despite that fact I loved this video, I am particularly happy every time you mention sknote:D When I heard that you're using Arouser instead of Disto these days, I was kind of sad 😂😂😂 plus I liked your review of the sknote plugin version of the Shadow Hill Mastering Compressor. Keep em coming Dave. Good stuff!
What exactly are those blinking blue light things that look like sci-fi movie props?? Are they just light things or are they actually something _somewhat related_ to sound? What are they exactly in terms of brand, name, make, model, price, etc??

I though so, I sent the link to a friend saying "nice 70's type sci-fi spaceship prop lights" or something, but he went on saying those were not just lights... talking about optical compressors and stuff, and I was like... _it doesn't really look like that_ . Do they have a brand anyway?
Nothing to do with audio hardware, even if i love my Drawmer 1973 and my Alta Moda Hippo for mastering, but where did you find this marvellous lamps behind you?? thanks

I use the Vertigo at Dweezil's studio regularly, or better, we have one there and I try to use it :D it's a great comp, built very well, and it has that "glue" factor, but I'm not a fan of the action and it's really clean. Not my cup of tea

It really depends on your budget, here's some options: Iron would be great: imp.i114863.net/ZMYoQ the MBP would be a great all in one for master processing: imp.i114863.net/okoxn and you could add an eq which would be the drawmer 1974 (I have that) imp.i114863.net/qdPk5 or going down in price the Wes Audio new bus comp (amazing) imp.i114863.net/yNVB2 or 1973 multiband: imp.i114863.net/zonAe you can add the eq to all of them and have a great chain

why is dudes videos lack so much color. so blurry and i still have it set to 1080p 60. videos always look foggy and hazy.. why?
The positive thing about running a mastering studio "gearwise" is that you potentially need less pieces and you will spend less to work with a high quality machine. For example, in a tracking and mixing studio with 5000 euros you can barely buy some "so-so" microphones and preamps to track a band

@@mixbustv ohh okay okay. Got it. 🤝
I owned the Shadow Hills MC, wanted so badly to like it, but never heard nor owned a more overrated piece of gear so far. The printing of the numbers was not high quality and soundwise it was just plain boredom, but not in a good way. No matter what source I used, I was never satisfied and always felt the need to replace it. The transformers sounded somehow cheep and snappy but not in a good way. I also owned the mono and the quadgamma, eventually sold them as well. The looks of all theie gear is great, but doesn't match the tone of the gear which is in my ears inferior to the looks.
Thanks for the great video! Check out the IGS Tubecore 3u, you will be well impressed for mastering ;)
