@@stormdoorguy Thanks for the tip about the flower pot. In my case, the door in question is at the back and opens up to the deck. The chain solution seems the best for my scenario. Bonus, I have some pull down blinds on each of the read deck patio doors, so I don't even see the wind chain.
My door opener said "use a wind chain to protect it". The wind chain was a bag with the chain and screws. This video is very easy to follow.

I watched several videos on how to install the wind chain, but none of them were clear. However, I came across this video that explained everything perfectly, and I followed it exactly. As a result, my installation was 100% perfect. Great job on creating such a helpful video, and of course, thank you!

I know how to read fairly well. I even taught Language Arts in my "pre-retired" days, however . . . I recognized the words on the instructions that came with my door stop but I have my doubts as to whether the person who wrote them ever attempted to follow them. Your video was very helpful and free of confusingly vague statements. I'm glad you didn't edit out your wrestling match with the spring. It's very helpful to see that there may be steps in the process that require patience and extra effort to get the job done properly. Thank you for your help. Now I'll move on to the next project: Replacing the section of gutter that the storm door damaged because there was no wind chain attached!

My “fav” video to install crash chains - thanks ! Tips : When searching for a crash chain install tutorial, I discovered that many - if not most were REPLACING the common crash chain ! I decided to find something more heavy-duty for my new steal, insulated exterior doors & found “Ram Pro Chain Crash Door Stop” - the links are MUCH thicker & have large springs on BOTH ends. I used 1/8” (3mm) “Quick Links” to attach my smaller center spring - this way I can easily detach when needing the door to stay open at times, with ease.👍🏻

I'm not a pro but here is my common sense theory on how the chain should be installed. The wind chain should be installed so that at it's maximum extension (spring fully compressed), the door does not open further than the door closer's maximum extension allows the door to open. So if the door closer only lets the door open to 90 degrees, then the chain should be installed so the door can only open to something less than 90 degrees when the spring is fully compressed. Otherwise if a gust off wind blows the door open the closer will be overstressed and something has to give.
@stormdoorguy

Great observation! You're absolutely correct. If you install the chain past the maximum extension point of the door closer, the jamb screws that connect the closer bracket to the entry door jamb will rip out due to the torque.
This was a very helpful video. I was able to install my wind chain in under 15 minutes. I would have definitely given up if I'd tried to follow the cryptic instructions on the package. (In fact, they didn't even make sense after I knew what to do.)

If the guys name is Storm Door Guy, it’s gotta be a good video. Thank you for your help, brother! One question, any particular reason you go 19” from the side on the head jamb whereas the instructions say go 18” from the side to apply to the head jamb? The instructions also say 19” from the side onto the door though. From a 7$ wind chain from Home Depot
@stormdoorguy
4 ай бұрын
Your welcome and great question! I go 19” because when you mount the chain to the storm door when it is open 90 degrees, and then you close the door, the bottom of the chain where you attach the spring at the curve ends on either the top or bottom of a chain link instead of the middle of a link. So went you pull the chain and spring to mount the spring to the door jamb so the chain is out of the way, the chain sits nice, flat, and flush. Otherwise, the chain won’t sit great and can bind and get caught on the closure. And if it doesn’t work right, it makes you feel bad. Then the wife gets mad, marital discord happens, the world ends, and you have single handedly ushered in the apocalypse. Happens all the time LOL. Have a great day and glad my video helped you get it done!!
I have a closer on top. How would you connect the chain.
@stormdoorguy
2 ай бұрын
If you have a closer on top, you really can't install a wind chain. There's just not enough room..
Can you do this with a closer on the top of the door?
@stormdoorguy
2 ай бұрын
No. With a top closer, there's no room for the wind chain. It's either the closer or the wind chain.
Have a Larson partial view storm on the back of the house. When we get a East or South east wind the door catches the wind really bad. Had to straighten the closer mount and one of the mounting pins today. Bought a spring kit but find with 2 closures supplied with the door there's not enough clearance for the spring to pass over the upper closer and the door frame. Any experience with this situation?
@stormdoorguy
Жыл бұрын
Yes. Unfortunately with the second closer at the top, you cannot add a wind chain because of the lack of room issue. My suggestion is a strategically placed plastic round flower pot filled with sand placed on the porch and used as a door stop so if the wind blows the door open, it hits the flower pot and prevents the door from hyperextending. A $10 solution to a $500 problem. Hope that helps!

@@stormdoorguy thanks for the reply, actually tried something like you suggested. Took a 5 gallon bucket, filled it with snow and placed it on the door mat in hopes of it absorbing some of the velocity of the door. Some times the door does not get pushed closed so its not latched, other times you exit the house with an arm load of stuff, not holding on to the door and "away she goes"!!
Any idea on how to do this on a door with retractable screen?
@stormdoorguy
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, you can't add a wind chain with retractable screen doors. I recommend a strategically placed flower pot on the porch instead. If you put the flower pot at the end of your storm door however far you want it to open, then if the door blows open it will hit the flower pot instead of hyper-extending and breaking the door.
@stoneyj1a1
Жыл бұрын
@@stormdoorguy I don't see that as a fix. So, I'm trying to add a piece of 1/8" bar stock and putting it across the top of the inside door. It's essentially like a brace. I added the T-shaped hook to this bar stock via machine screws & nuts from the back. I realize this is total rig job but when the storm door flies open it smashes into my porch light fixture which needs replacing. Hopefully the chain and a new gas closer will save my door for years to come. Otherwise I'll just buy a new cheap storm door.
@stormdoorguy
Жыл бұрын
That should work. Often with wind chains, we have to add a spacer block so the chain clears the bottom lip of the header frame of the storm door.
Ok, but how do I keep it from slamming CLOSED and bending my dual closers like salt water taffy on a hot day?
@stormdoorguy
6 ай бұрын
The wind chain shouldnt have enough force to close the door on its own. It only limits how far the door can open. If the door is slamming, that sounds like a closer piston issue.
My closer is right there where you mounted the safety chain how do I address that?
@stormdoorguy
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, you can have either a closer or a wind chain, not both because there's not enough room. I suggest a strategically placed flower pot in that case. Put the flowerpot at the maximum opening point for the storm door if your porch area allows it. Get a large plastic one and fill it with sand so if the door hyperextends it hits the flower pot without damaging the closers or your door jamb.
Does this replace the pneumatic door closer?
@stormdoorguy
4 ай бұрын
It depends on the type of door you have. For example, on a Larson Tradewinds there’s not enough room for both the closer and a wind chain. But on the Larson Savannah, there is enough room. You just need about a 2 inch space between the top of the closer and the top of the door to fit a wind chain in.

If its an Andersen door, no. I’d recommend a strategically place flower pot placed where the door opens completly. That way if the door blows open it hits the pot and doesnt destroy the door.

@@stormdoorguy I went ahead and installed it. I watched a video where it shows the screen and where it's located. It was a success. No damage to the screen.
Whoever installed our Storm Door when the house was built didn't know how a Wind Chain Protect the Storm Door because it was just connected to the Door Frame and not to the Storm Door which doesn't make sense. The chain is just dangling when the main door is opened. I guess he, whoever it was thought it was just cosmetic.
