I don't think it is wrong to "pander to counterculture". If that's the label for pointing out hypocrisy, it's a badge of honor. If you call out Tom for pandering, you'd have to call out Eminem and many other rappers for pandering to the mainstream.

Speaking about your honest opinion isn’t pandering. The problem with Tom is that what he says in his songs, even though I agree with a lot of his stances, is a very surface level take of all these issues, and he never really takes a whole song to focus on one thing. He spends a bar or 2 on a very racially or politically charged topic to drop this dramatic opposing opinion, then moves on to something else instead of taking the time to make it feel real. That’s why people view it as pandering. Same way modern country artists are notorious for pandering to the “southern lifestyle” while living in their mansions in Hollywood just by saying a few words about tractors and moving on 🤣

What are you even trying to say? The pandering from Tom (which if you a fan you would have to realise) is he completely jumps side's every other song. Sometimes he can't even stick to the one side for an entire song... He's all over the place and it's not 'his shtick' or 'he's doing it to prove a point' he's literally jumping all over the place to pander to everything as quickly as possible because most people are too stupid to realise what he's doing

@@mrfoobz5709 So I can see that. I do want to see some more focused issues. He has done that before though, like the songs Sober, Cancer, Cancelled and Sad Rappers. I think he is being careful though. He is trying to stay in the middle of the political spectrum, and point out issues with both sides. I feel like his views on things are still evolving, so you might not see a song only on abortion, or only on Trump, or Biden for that matter. Just my thoughts on that.

The 👀 outside of Tom's fan base wouldn't fully understand what it takes to do it all by yourself. He's not mainstream so saying other "white mainstream" artists are better says nothing. When slim came out he changed the rap game. What Tom is doing independently is changing the rap game. #HOG

Nope. If he was rapping like he does now, and releasing several tracks that were just MSNBC talking points, i'd still call him cringy af. His political persuasion doesn't mean anything to me. it's how cringy the writing is and how low effort it is... i mean one of them his hook is just parroting LITERALLY ben shapiro. I think Don't Look Down is the best track Tom has ever done. He avoids the ultra cringy hooks, no low brow cringy political stuff. This is a Cypher style rap, on an EXCELLENT beat, which he completely bodies. I just hope he aims to this level from now on, because now that we know he can write this well, the low brow stuff will stick out even more if he falls back in to that.

When he's comparing himself to Eminem, it's less about the BARS and STYLE, and more about how controversial Em was in the beginning of his career. Yes, of course he plays to his base...but if you listen to the words over several songs, where he speaks on the same subjects in different ways...he's not preaching a message, he's on about the contradictions. I have to disagree with you on the pandering. Ive listened to Tom for a long time and used to really enjoy everything he put out. I was the first one to stand up for him when people got mad about certain lyrics because he rode the middle so well. He used to speak on things honestly and he took flack from both sides because he was Canadian and had a different perspective on America than just left or right, but somewhere along the way he seemed to discover that pandering hard to the right gained him more fans than it cost him. At that point he clearly made a conscious decision to pander exclusively to the right even and especially when it directly contradicted viewpoints he had expressed in the past. When you relinquish your own viewpoints to to cater to the viewpoints of the majority of your fanbase, you are pandering, and being a libertarian myself who used to agree with about 99% of Toms viewpoints, its was and has been disheartening to see that drop closer to 50 or 60 percent because he would rather have the money than the integrity of speaking honestly..

Pausing I expect, and I’m here for the breakdown, but I don’t get why you don’t go thru the whole track. As for the “old slim shady” line, you completely missed the point. Tom is saying no one since Shady has had the balls to talk about anything that matters. Unless you think girls, drugs and drinking is important. I am a huge Eminem fan, but the mainstream rap game has been garbage for years. It’s refreshing to have so many new, independent artists coming out with great writing and fire vids. That’s my opinion anyway.

@@davidpaterson2643 you're trying to assert Tom's appeal... that wasn't the topic. The topic is Ernest and Stevie being turned. I watch those two reactors almost religiously. They don't particularly like Tom's music as a whole. They both said he has tracks, like this one that they fuck with... but as hip hop heads, his sound, his content etc on his singles that he releases are just not their flavor. They've repeated themselves and have to tip toe around the topic because even though HOG are huge supporters for those who like Tom, they are seething for those who openly admit that Tom isn't their cup of tea. So, as I stated... my opinion is that neither of those dudes are "turned" because of a single song. Tom would neeeeeed to produce multiple songs like this track right NOW to "turn" these dudes. But until that happens, Tom's hooks, his pandering, his content is going to turn these guys off, as well as the vast, VAST majority of the hip hop community. We all respect the dude, his hussle, his grind, his coming up as an independent artist is all commendable a d impressive... but his sound, his content just isn't for everybody. And if we HAVE to listen to these ______ songs to "get him" to have any sort of relatability to him is borderline desperate to try and "turn" non Tom fans into Tom fans. That's kinda like trying to say Tom should change his sound to be more palatable to a wider range of listeners.

@@TheThirdErnest Ok. Let’s get this straight. You not hating but you recently made fun some of his fans’ comments on your reaction at Tom’s “Snowflakes” and went as far as criticizing each and every opinion they have on Tom. So that’s not hate at all? Like making fun and throwing insults. No “hate” at all. 😬 Hate = intense or passionate dislike. Denoting actions motivated by intense dislike or prejudice. I mean I don’t know man. But this really looks like a big backpedal to me. Call me soft or whatever you feel to justify your reasons just ‘cuz I feel sorry for those people you made comedy of but damn man, is it so hard to be that emphatic for their passion on Tom’s music? 😐

But Em had a giant machine behind him and Tom does everything himself. And now, he's on the radio and beating out mainstream stars on the charts. And yet, he's still independent and doing everything himself. All he's saying with the Slim Shady line is that he's the one currently pressing people's buttons more than anybody else, much like Em use to do back in the day.

I get not everyone is gonna like Tom, and especially not every song. With the Em thing though, if you know Tom even a little, he doesn't compare himself in the way you, and many others, seem to take it. Plenty of times I've seen lives of him and he doesn't want to be anyone other than himself. I get why it can seem like he is though, but I suggest maybe thinking a little deeper into it than just taking it at face value. Em did used to say things that were controversial, and Tom has certainly talked about social issues that hit a nerve in some people. I've personally never thought he was actually saying he is as good as, or better than Em, simply pointing out some comparisons between the two. I'm sure many have already mentioned it previously but I think it's a fun little fact one of his songs actually did beat Em on the charts for a few days. I doubt many other indie artists can brag about that.

Well, in comparison to some like Knox Hill who knows every technical detail, maybe. But the real question is- why are you here on his channel if you don't like what he has to say? The internet is enormous and if all you care about is being in an echo chamber that gives you only opinions you agree with, you should keep moving down the road. I can't understand why everyone believes that the entire world HAS to know EVERYTHING they think about absolutely everything. As Bo Burnham said, can anyone just shut the fuck up? Frankly, I think Ernest WORKED very hard to find positives in Macdonald's song. If it had been my reaction, your head would have exploded. This song was literally like sandpaper on my eardrums. Oh.my.God. people seriously feed this shit to their CHILDREN? Where, at white supremacist summer camp? This song isn't racist, but the guy is practically the mascot for white supremacist groups everywhere. Right now, his voice is blasting out of speakers while hate filled white guys type their venom onto the internet. I really tried to give this guy a chance. In the beginning he was trying to find his niche and he was singing his truth. Unfortunately, he discovered his niche was singing to angry white guys and it's smack-you-in-the-face obvious. I 100% support the U.S. military using Macdonald's entire song catalog as torture- it doesn't even need to be played loudly. If the individual has the slightest musicality, he will be screaming to please make it stop within the hour. This is TERRIBLE music. I respect your right to enjoy absolutely terrible music, but not to come on someone's channel and bash them because they have a different opinion than you do of your favorite artist. Ernest is a reactor. Reactors (in theory, anyway) give their honest opinions about whatever they react to. Ernest really worked hard to give a positive reaction to this song, which strained his honesty but didn't break it. You should be thankful for the amount of effort he put into this. It certainly wasn't worth it. If you disagree with him, please don't let the door hot you where the good Lord split you. Goodbye- don't stop by any more.

I don’t think you don’t get it. One of the interesting things about this particular artist is that he takes responsibility for the visual element of it. So much of what people call corny only becomes so when you take it out of context and deny the fact that every set and everything he wears in a video has bearing on the substance of the video. You call it pandering but the totality of what is being said is not dependent on anyone song that happens to focus on one side of a problem. He flips subjects because he doesn’t sit on either side, he just doesn’t see the point of the extremes and has no problem shining both of them. He’s also very true to the titles he gives but if you’ve seen enough of his stuff there is no extreme he won’t touch on. I honestly don’t think he believes any of the political shit but he knows who to piss off because they will scream about him. He knows who to embrace because he knows the number of those that the media has forgotten or trashes. I think he sensors himself because his fans feel they have to and it further embeds solidarity and loyalty. He is true to his fans so he will probably end up in a rough place if things get upside down socially. For the present, his bullshit makes him bulletproof because those that listen to him feel that they are rebelling against a reality that does not get the kind of air time it should. Ironically, that puts in in the category of Alex Jones LOL. Still, if you’re really going to engage in counterculture in the age of cancel culture, you don’t have many options. He does what he does to fortify himself well and I appreciate that. I think he takes shots at the main stream because so long as he isn’t signed they are free shots. No studio worth their salt would allow it. It would damage them business wise. He will never be able to escape slim because ... culture, so he owns the target. I suppose you could call his marketing, “Bullshit” but as Ice T points out, “Don’t hate the player...” at this rate the hosts you can name will be out on their ear and trying to mimic his strategy but they won’t have the ambivalent message, or a firm grip on the people that they spent decades making fun of and all of the industry and establishment nonsense that people will not forget. The internet’s funny that way. To be clear I like that he is honest enough to enunciate. I love The math of the progression I see and the art including the hooks that are designed as psychological grabs which last longer than the song. I only started listening to wrap sense slim but I couldn’t listen to most of the culture because I took issue with much of the reality of the rap game. Eventually I stopped listening to slim because he got As monotonous and decadent. Slim allowed me to expect the ability to fill an entire track with legitimate things to listen to and three or four verses with distinct additions to the whole. Now there are several artists that are trying to artistically clean up their game but you can see who they are chasing and the hands they are shaking. You can also see that they are more into beefing and social retread, then appreciating that the social realities that made the past rappers money is under siege from counter culture and it can’t even justify its existence without saying, “that’s how it’s always been.” I’m ok with that going in the grave. Society would be better without the need to promote decadence to further degeneracy and all the ills that destroy that society.

Ernest, I thought you would for sure. Anyway, it seems like Tom was trying to replicate the "punch" of NF's last verse on Clouds - when he's walking against traffic on the highway spitting at the top of his lungs - but instead of epic, authentic passion, this felt so forced and over the top. Was it supposed to be sardonic, because everyone seems to be taking it very seriously. From someone who admittedly looks up to Tom, I'm sad to say that a potentially epic track became epically cringey.

All it does is gets people who agree with the original point to say " see? He is operating truth because what he just said IS a contradiction". But he isn't actually offering any outlook on the subjects. He is the political version of the Leo pointing at the TV meme. The fans just hear these easy talking points, agree with them, think it's smart and then proclaim he is such a during rapper who speaks the truth. When in reality, he isn't saying anything new. Also, as far as the cussing, this is to make sure the adds play and also that it’s open to all ages!! Tom is extremely smart and if you honestly think he does that for no reason, then you have no idea who you’re dealing with..again he didn’t get to where he’s at from listening to you, and other haters, but rather knowing exactly what’s he’s doing!! Proofs in the pudding! 🤷🏻‍♀️ If he listened to you he wouldn’t even have a career! TBH, you probably hate the political songs, cause you’re on the sides of things he talking about! 😂

I think he’s doing the same thing that others have done...hoping that by throwing smoke @ Em, they’ll be mentioned in EM’s next joint. Clout-chasing, pure & simple.
