The looking through a cut-out technique-- it is a genius idea. When I started "getting serious" I set myself a task: to sit down, sit anywhere, and look around and find good shots to make. After years of doing some of that, several of my favorite photos are from those sessions.

All of that is completely true. It makes me remember that probably the most touching photo I ever took, I made with one of those cell phones with a little keyboard. What a day it is for people to enjoy making photos and art: no film to buy, no prints to order, we can delete, alter, and re-try and re-experiment at no expense, and on KZread learn from so many experienced, knowledgeable people such as yourself. There is no other hobby like it.

Really good advice. On occasions when I go out and don't have my camera, I try to observe my surroundings. Eventually I get to spot moments that I think would make a great shot, even if I don't have a camera to take that shot. Also when I do have my camera I think its very useful to just keep taking pictures, keep experimenting with ideas. If I come home and I don't really like any of the photographs, there is still always something to learn from it. I find seeing what doesn't make a great photo is as valuable as seeing what does make a great photo in the learning process.

I love observing someone drinking a cup of coffee, attitude, movement, how people look at their cup and so on. So I agree totally with your video. Great photographers are nostalgic, melancolic, sensitive and sometimes funny.

Exactly! You have to have some degree of sensitivity to be able to engage and see a picture opportunity in the real world I think. Although same goes for other arts I would say!

Great advice Tatiana, I remember having a set of the old Time-Life photography books back in the 1970's and 80's that someone gave me (wish I still had them), I studied and learned a lot from those as well as watching and observing films on the big screen that helped me to learn about framing and lighting. 📷😎

Put my phone away and learn to see more, and not to just look. There is so much to see, so much to observe, so much opportunity to capture and document. This video really hit home for me. Thank you! Strangely enough, you just described my own process of learning photography by first studying semiotics, visual representation, and elements of cinema. For Masters and PhD, those subject, along with history & sociology, were the focus of my curriculum. BYW, I did not plan to take up photography and actually started taking pictures (for the third time) right after I finished my studies and my brief time teaching film, gender, & African-American Studies and how visual representation played a part in shaping the ways we perceive the world. All the above helped me refine my talent for visual analysis, which I then started applying to my photography. The first 2 times I tried photography I simply thought I could pick up an SLR and take "great pictures," but once I had my academic foundation, my third attempt at photography was grounded in a love of visual arts and of learning more and more about them. So, yeah, great video.

An interesting #philosophy and idea proposed here. At first glance, I thought you meant studying #artwork at a museum or gallery. Perhaps take up drawing or painting in learning how to see the world in a different way. I don't mean becoming a painter like Caravaggio or Jan van Eyck overnight, but trying to sketch with pencils can help someone see things differently.

I got a A in a special topics:Photography class in grad school shooting a photo series on an iPhone 6. My classmates thought I had shot film. I think a lot of people get beholden to this romantic idea that certain cameras are better because their influences used them. The camera has nothing to do with it, it’s just a tool. It’s like saying Monet’s art came from his brushes.
