I think my favourite example of dynamic camera movement in the show was when wolfwood spun his cross around for the first time when they were inside the worm That was just one of the most effortlessly cool things I've ever seen lol

@@kaspersmok9633 I don't think the character designs are much worse at all. They're simply representing a different, more playful sci-fi aesthetic, which I think was executed very well. There was definitely a lot of thought and love put into the redesigns. I especially like the detail of Vash now wearing a very modern project SEEDS jacket and Meryl wearing one from her university, making them stand out from the more rural places they visit. It's a neat reminder for how the development differs between settlements on the same planet, since the story is centered much more around plant-energy now. We already know that Trigun Stampede is somewhat structured like a prequel, so I believe there's definitely a chance that the "90s space western" aesthetic could gradually return as the settlements are losing energy. It does make me sad that they toned down Wolfwood's muscle boobs, though. That's a huge loss...😔

It's the gatekeeping thought of, when something is CGI it is automatically bad. It also tells me that most of these people do not understand how animation actually work and it is truly saddening to see.. Glad Trigun Stampede is getting the love it deserves because you can tell there was so much love and effort put into this. both love for the classic anime style aswell as what the future CGI can provide!

@@outoforder8791 The lack of Plants because Knives stole them is a good reason for them to go back to the "90s space western" aesthetic (or at least something more similar to it), I didn't think of that before 😲now that just increases my hopes that the character designs will look more like those in Trigun Maximum. Don't get me wrong, I liked the designs in this show but I couldn't deny that I got so excited when Vash had his original hairstyle in ep 12. It's also possible that his new red coat would look more similar to the original since it was either burned up due to him falling like a meteor or he left it behind in the wreckage like in the manga. He could even get a new prosthetic arm that transforms into a gun like in the original since it got absorbed into the Angel Arm. Hell, he could also get the shades with the zigzag arms since if you look closely, his purple shades got cracked during the fight. I'm also holding out hope that even Meryl would get her iconic cape since she's using her derringers now. I'm not sure about Wolfwood though, but at the very least I'm hoping he'll call himself a priest in season 2 since in the contract that Conrad gave him in ep 10, he was called a Pastor. But I don't know, I'm just excited for what they'll do in season 2 ♥

The final fight easily will be one of my favourite parts of anime this year... An absolute perfect and stunning representation of all the hard work put in by the team at Orange to fine tune this ultimate passion project. This isn't even mentioning the fact we're only half way through and with even more boundaries to break visually once the second part drops I can only imagine we're in for some magic. I haven't even talked about the charming characters and sublime story, but I'm sure people get the point...

Same! I go back and observe and break it down. Some key moments for me were how he paused and loaded his gun quickly, how he readjusted himself to run away and shoot before going behind the pillar, and then dynamically running and positioning him self safely mid-air to bust through the window. That whole final scene leaves me in absolute awe...the ost choice as well leading through those scenes was a masterpiece. Its going to be hard to top an anime for a while for me just on the sheer amount of love put into this project. I can't wait for 2025 to get our season 2.
Trigun Stampede was a pleasant surprise. Yes, I loved the artstyle of the 98 anime, but the animation was so limited. Stampede, on the other hand, has so much movement, and I think it's most impressive in the final battle of the season.

@MelloCello7
11 ай бұрын
@@yori8553 I appreciate that you think that was explained fairly, but in reality, though accurate, is ironically an extremely *limited* definition that has since outgrown that rudimentary objective. Legendary studios and artists, such as studio trigger (I apologize for not knowing the individual artists name) and even legendary American animation directors, such as Genndy Tartakovsky, have used limited animation to great affect to confound and relay motion in a way that derives a more compelling narrative in a fewer amount of frames. This takes an immense amount of skill, experience, and talent at the craft to execute. We would not have the iconic hard hitting style of Dragon Ball Z or the highly influential Jojo multi punch without its skillful implementation. Don't get me wrong, I love gorgeous straight ahead animation as much as the next guy, but this is an anime hallmark. to reduce this technique to an inferior qualitative statement is to deny the skill and hard work of many talented Japanese animators.
Trigun Stampede's cgi was phenomenal. Groundbreaking. We are seeing the shift, having 3D feel 2D while being able to capture the advantages of 3D. It felt immersive. This is the future
@D_Wito
Жыл бұрын
It didn't feel 2D to me. Maybe some random details or backgrounds. It isn't the future and it wasn't groundbreaking, it just got animators that knew what they are doing (though looking at how disney found good looking style for animation and stuck to it for so long instead of trying different styles seems that finding good looking 3D animation style may feel groundbreaking). It sure has tasteful style (though I like dirty style of the old one more, this one looks to clean for this setting) and doesn't brake immersion like chainsawman does at some moments (especially in 1st ep... and especially on larger screen, I feel like they may have focused to much on shocking with realistic animation instead of natural looking animation what Trigun Stampede did right, I'm not saying that chainsaw man was bad, it looks great but has some immersionbreaking moments where it feels "not right").

@@D_Wito That's what I felt looking the video. Much more groundbreaking to me was Guilty Gear Xrd and Sign. Not shows, but that's, to date, still the best example of 3D made to look like anime animations. In the case of Trigun Stampede, smear frames are lacking, the limited framerate feels weird (I mean if they're really removed AFTER rendering, that's just not how 2D animation works, some things are drawn at different framerates, especially background stuff) and it also seems to lack any sort of squashing and stretching. All techniques implemented by Guilty Gear which, when graphics are turned up to the max with AA sometimes look almost indistinguishable from drawings. I mean it still looks incredible, but I can't believe we're not holding 3D trying to be 2D to a higher standard when there ARE examples of it.

Agree Studio Orange is such s goated studio in 3d animation. It really pissed me off when the trigun community passed off stampede due to cgi. Hopefully the final fight can open a lot of people’s eyes on the huge benefits in cgi that is practically impossible in 2d.
5:43 that's quite impressive! it's actually how 3D games work with environment object models like trees, foliage, rocks, etc. Multiple renderings of a 3D model are used, decreasingly low-poly. When the camera is at a distance, the detailed model is swapped by a lower detailed one and again when the camera is even further, etc. Compression aside, this is mostly the norm because of the need for efficient memory consumption and computing time of the device. With the latest version of Unreal Engine, there's his nanite technology which can render varyingly detailed 3D models based on the camera, all by itself! Also, the role of Unreal Engine, as you mentioned it, will be huge in filmmaking in the future. And it's just so amazing seeing an anime using Unreal Engine for its backgrounds. Amazing video again, btw

I love the way the micro expressions and consistent character acting gave so much life to the characters in Stampede. Everyone has unique body language that we can actually see instead of the usual "pose like your appropriate archetype" in most anime. Regardless of animation style and aesthetics, human emotion is timeless when its executed well. People can complain about cg but to me, making a believable character is what matters most and small details like this is a luxury many animes can't have due to budget constraints or lack of talent.
I like how Studio Orange works, because every anime that they made, there's always a new technique in their CG-Work, for example, Houseki No Kuni for the first CG Anime that they made, it has a lot iteration of Hair Shading, Beastars for their fur physics, And Trigun for exaggerated expressions in fully 3D, they're really improve the Expression because in Houseki (As far as i know, please correct me if i wrong), it still using heavily corrected with 2D, and in Trigun, they using Fully 3D for that.
@LotusHearted

It is “corrected” in HnK, but a more accurate description would be that it’s a blended, a composite animation. I actually quite like that they did it, it’s practically seamless, and I think that it’s a style that could definitely use more exploring.
THANK YOU so much for this video. 100% agree, the series looks great, and as a 3D artist I've been trying to see what Vash's model looked like to no avail, and you put all those lovely screenshots and info in. Thank you!

Just read through the articles you linked. My eyes are watering 🥲 The amount of effort they put into development and production is amazing.
I find 3D/CGI animation is hated by a lot of western fans, because they don’t want 2D animation to die, so they want to restrict the creative freedom by only wanting Japan to do a specific style. This is just unfair to the artists who want to experiment. Although the original Trigun doesn’t look as good, I think cel animation looks beautiful, even compared to modern anime. It obviously depends on the show, but Akira isn’t the only well animated anime from that period. Side note: I think the best looking CGI from television is Star Wars the Clone Wars, specifically from season 3 onward. Just so much good animation, whether it’s fights, character acting or just beautiful backgrounds. It’s not anime, but who cares?
6:11 fun fact, another term for alternating frame rates is called “Skipframe” as sometimes slowing the frame rate a lot means it looks choppy and stylized (this was used in spider verse and puss in boots for various scenes, and used entirely for the Wingfeather saga show!)
Agreed with the title! Studio Orange's implementation of CGI in their works is genuinely masterful.
From the moment I saw it, the anime felt like Into the Spider-Verse levels of emotion. It was just…so beautiful
I used to wonder why stiff 3d anime didn't just do what final fantasy did with Advent Children, but Stampede pulled off this style really well. The nuanced facial expressions and small character movements are my favorite. Idk if its just me but I like it when I can still draw the characters in 2d as they appear in the show without it looking awkward. That's usually not something I can do with most 3d animation without much effort on shading so if its done well like this, I appreciate stylized cgi a lot more than the usual pixar-ish stuff.
hahaah I laughed at the 'this looks horrifying'. great explanation, thank you! i appreciate these insights into how much work went into this anime, because I could tell the studio put their whole heart into it and it's nice to know the technical aspects of how they achieved their vision
probably one of the best CG projects I watched. great video as always ❤
i will defend trigun stampede til the day i die. ITS SO GOOD. like when im watching it i feel like im watching a videogame cutscene i love it
Trigun Stampede being inspired by Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse- advancing point in the industry of animation- says a lot about the dedication of Orange Studio in its own. You can tell that there was SO much love and hard work was put into this show, I can’t comprehend how some people are disappointed because of the CGI. The studio did everything they could’ve possibly done to make Stampede a genuine masterpiece. I genuinely can’t stress that enough
Great video I liked how you positioned each technique they used throughout the series and how it culminates to the final fight really great transitioning. I did find the “this is impossible” type wording when it came to an anime like this wouldn’t exist in this day and age when Houseki no Kuni was agh was go it’s time in 2017 so Stampede doing something similar came off as unimaginable even if we have precedence. Came from the Hell’s Paradise video which I didn’t like the structure of so I definitely enjoyed watching your thoughts on Stampede a lot more.
98 Trigun and Trigun Stampede are both beautiful in their own ways. I wasn't sure about Tristamp at first, but I'm all for the style now, and I think Studio Orange did so well because they didn't try to make it realistic. They stylized everything and really pushed what CGI can do. That amount of knives still seems like it made the final render stutter a little bit, though. Also Zazie's bugs at one point.
I really can't wait for the time, where 3D CGI in anime is expected, efficient and most of all perfected. The time where Berserk could get a perfect 3D CGI adaptation of the whole series and it looks fantastic. That time may be decades away, but technology seems to evolve so fast lately, I think we are closer than most might expect.

I don't think cg in anime being good will ever be the norm as long as the anime industry stays like this. Anime is too cheaply made and produced too quickly for cg to turn out good. Technology won't make up for a lack of talent and time, if it did we wouldn't have cg from movies in 2006 looking better than 90% of what comes out these days.
I can't look at this and not be amazed on how good it looks! I'm personally all for the future of CG anime because of all the advantages 3D has!
After Land of Lustrous, Beastars and Godzilla: Singular Point, I had zero issues with Orange handling CGI. I was more scared for how they would handle the themes of the story. And i am happy with what we got.
I agree with everything you said Trigun stampedes cgi animation is truly amazing and impressive
The action sequences were amazing, so pleasing to look at
Their is no other 3D anime series that have this smooth animation and character expression even polygon picture studio can't make this kind of 3D animation.
3:48 Even though I don't know that much about 3d animation this is what I was thinking about for the longest time that could be applied to attack on titans's 3d models, I was thinking if it was possible to make different models to match what a 2d drawing would look like in a specific angle making it stick out less than what the base model would look like in the same angle and it seems like the techniques used here makes that a reality but also the process more feasible and possibly be utilised in the future by other studios like mappa in something like a future dorehedoro season 2
One of the most beautiful shows I've seen. The characters music and visuals were outstanding
the anime community needs more people like you. i still sometimes see people saying that aot s3 eren vs reiner slideshow is better than the dynamic and very well animated cgi fight in s4p2
from the first second i watched trigun stampede i was blown away by the animation. totally unlike anything ive ever seen before. thanks for explaining so clearly and interestingly why it looks so good! this, spiderverse, and arcane are totally (and finally) changing the animation game. i hope we get lots more new unique styles and techniques!
I do want to point out on “don’t fill smoke to hide awkward movements.” Because there was a moment that used smoke in a very different way. Not obscuring flaws but using it in way one would utilize smoke in a thriller. When Millions Knives is ascending the staircase at Jenora Rock and cuts up two of the three women, it’s terrifying as you can’t solidly anticipate his actions. That is very good use of smoke.
Personally, I love that they didn't used cel shading lining that causes the most issues, especially at a distance when in become more prominent than the actual model
Currently watching Trigun Stampede on Netflix. (Started streaming on Netflix in Hong Kong as of last Friday, 2 days ago) And there are moments where I can't differentiate CGI and 2D animation. It was that good.

Such a well made analysis!
Thanks for talking about this anime, it had to many backlash cause its a remake, but to me it was truly a groundbreaking anime and i can't wait for the next season
I think the consistent use of it allows viewers to stay immersed because there's no contrasting artstyles or art elements competing for attention and this adds quality. I want to think on Made in Abyss as an example; even if they did their best to make the artstyle seamless, the ever so slight differences made the 3D really stand out from the 2D (I am totally in favor of using CGI for complex animation, I am merely giving an example). Our brains can get used to the artstyle and focus on the other elements of the show as a whole to enjoy.
I agree with your mind set about CGI used in anime
By comparison, the stunningly beautiful 2D film Redline took the Madhouse 7 years to produce, even with its budgets and the number of talented animators. So drawing a very beautiful 2d series can take as much time as making it in 3d with current technology
