Here's Why The Bentley Bentayga W12 Might Finally Be A Sensible Purchase...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's video, I drive the first generation Bentley Bentayga. I have previously sampled and enjoyed the facelifted car - but now I'm trying the earlier car with the W12 engine. In Europe, we never got the W12 in the facelift Bentayga, and it was discontinued worldwide in 2020 - but is there enough about this to make it worth buying?

The VW W8 and W12 engines are utterly terrifying to own once they get on a bit. Here we got both engines in various VW badged vehicles - they were a pretty common site up until they all started to get on a bit - now you never see them at all because they have all been mechanically written off by the engines. I guess a Bentley is going to take quite a bit more dollar wise to mechanically write it off... but then you have the added stress of the turbo charging... I'd be staying well clear.

Your right about the v8 over the w12. I have worked on a few Bentleys and the v8 is more reliable because it’s a simpler design from the vw group part bin and it has a larger fuel range too. I wish that Bentley could return the diesel v8 because that engine suits the car better and it can achieve like 40mpg which gives it a 500 mile range as opposed to 300 with the petrol ones.

I think he did well to get the Bentley-backed warranty. It's the only way to run something like this, in my opinion. There are two huge advantages to manufacturer-backed warranties. First, the service department or whoever approves the claims will deal with them similarly to a new car warranty. Secondly, the cost of the repairs to the warranty company is effectively at a wholesale cost, so on average, you are actually getting your car fixed with genuine new parts close to the wholesale price. The only downside to all this is that repairs may take a very long time to complete because dealerships tend to do the money-making jobs first. I have had a BMW-backed warranty on my BMW 760i for the last 11 years, I have had value for money out of it for almost every year. Even if I did all the work on the car myself, the warranty would still be value for money for the parts alone. Most of the premium manufacturers have a similar program, however, the dealerships do not go out of their way to sell the policies.

Just don’t spec those wheels they’re a freaking nightmare to clean. They have a ridge inbetween the spokes that collects brake dust like crazy! And it’s very difficult to get behind to get it out.

Not really my kind of motor, as I'm not am SUV fan and it's a bit of a behemoth. It is however impressive at defying physics, does make a fabulous noise when on song and the metal switchgear is beautiful.

Like I said on the RR video, these big cars offer a lot of comfortable space for an averaged sized guy. But it seems quite large for many of the small lanes in UK. I'd still take my old Macan Turbo as a right-sized SUV with sharp handling.

I'm not exactly a fan of SUVs, but it's only when you get up close and personal to a Bentayga, as I have done at Concours events, that you appreciate its quality. I don't think you can make any rational decision to choose the Bentley over the equivalent Range Rover, and certainly not the quirky W12 engine, but its trump card is its snob value and appeal to traditional British 'oneupmanship'.

When all is said and done, this and the Urus are big, comfortable, high performance SUV’s. IMO they are both pretty ugly too. So, close your eyes getting in as it’s not pretty, ignore the turbo lag and if like me you are an old git that has no concerns about having the latest infotainment, then I commend a gen 1 Cayenne Turbo. It does have a Bose hi fi, glass sunroof and buttons to adjust the air suspension easily, just as James said he would like on the Bentley Sort the plastic cooling pipes and prop shaft joint for c £2k for both jobs if not done already, and like me you can then have a FMDSH car with I recently test drove an AM DBX that with options as fitted was close to £200k. I drove back from the dealer in my £10k Cayenne Turbo and definitely didn’t feel I was getting only 5% of the DBX experience that I had paid for. Owned it for 3 years now and subject to the aforementioned cooling pipes and prop shaft fixes done as a precautionary measure, it’s been faultless on many 1000 mile round trips between my U.K. and French homes, loaded to the gunnels👍
