Today, I drive my friend @Number27 's Bentley Continental GT - which he picked up for £18,000. We all know these are cheap cars - but I'm asking if it's still worth it, or if they're just too much hassle.

Ouch. The other big one, as noted by Jay, those hard plastic vacuum lines in these early cars WILL absolutely fail at some point - and I think it's optimistic to expect to pay only five or six thousand pounds to replace them - unless you have a pretty friendly Bentley mechanic. I guess if you can find one that has already had them done as well as that suspension refresh, your only real worry would be niggly things you could probably live with - but otherwise at the age they are now, if they haven't had those things done Jay is right, you're likely in for a mechanical write-off at some point unless you don't mind spending more money than the car is worth to fix it.

Great content Jay. We have a facelifted Flying Spur in the same colour (Dark Nlue Somerhingorother) but Magnolia leather. Always an event to drive even though it's mainly for trailing the Grandkids around...the space in the back makes child seats easy and no kicking of the drivers seat from the little darlings. Had it a few months and it's my favourite car to drive. Tried it as a daily for a week and regal on country roads but the mpg was just a little too fruity to keep as such. Only had to replace a battery, which manifested as a nuber of electrical gremlins...all of which vanished when the new one was put in. The boot motor was broken when we got it and the £2k quote means we are happy to just lift it manually. For £18k it's great fun and looks the part on the grass at the Races. Great experience so far but my fingers are always crossed.

Oh, and we also had a 2017 V8 Gt in Silver. That car was excellent, after Bentley fixed an oil leak, and I preferred the noise it made. Slightly better fuel economy and a surprising capacity for 4 adults, meant it was a more usable vehicle. Prefer the Spur's space and presence though.

Great summary James of a very good car. Brilliantly effortless on the motorway and straight smooth A roads on long journeys. I've had mine for about 2 and a half years. I took it to my local Bentley main dealer for it's first service and then to an independent specialist after that - the latter being both better and cheaper. Maintenance has been about £1.5-£2k per year. It's 100% better to go for one that's been looked after all it's life rather than a cheap one that you think you can bring back up to good condition. Also, if ever there was a car that needs to be used regularly it's this one - even letting it sit for a couple of weeks can start to throw up spurious electrical warnings. I've put mine up for sale now, but only because my kids are too big for the back seats.

The vacuum pipe issue was present on 2007 cars. I know as I had a 2007. It cost £2300 to fix at a bentley main dealer. The first quote was £3990, only when I said I would take it to a specialist did they reduce the price. It’s not £5k as said in the video. Servicing at a main dealer in 2023 for an over 4 year old car is £700 for cheap service and £1100 for the main service. And there are plenty of very good specialists now who are generally a little cheaper but in my experience offer more of a detailed approach than the main dealer. So while more expensive than the average car to service it’s similar to others of the same class. I have a mark 2 GTC now and it is a better all round car, tempted by mark 3, but it’s lost some of the Bentley look and feel. Progress?

I know lots of people will day "repairs and maintenance" but I've had a vantage and that was pretty reliable. Maybe I got lucky. Ive driven the DB9 a year ago and it still has the capacity to thrill.

I've had a 2007 Flying Spur Mulliner since Feb this year. It's one of the world's greatest cars. In my previous S classes, XJR, A8 etc you're totally anonymous - no one gives you a second glance. In the Bentley people stop to look at it, ask you questions & admire it. BUT, they can be a pain to own. It took Autoglass 10 weeks to fit a new windscreen - the original infra red coated screens are discontinued, so I now have brown tints side & back, and a green front screen. And if you need a new UK satnav disc, forget it ! Unobtainable. You can get parts for a 100 year old Bentley 3 litre, but parts for a 16 year old Flying Spur are getting tricky.

Low owners and full Bentley history is a must. I buy cars like this every 6 months or so. Sell them for the purchase price and move on. I add £300 per month to my available money to purchase new vehicles. Just hope I don't get a lemon. It's been nearly 10 years now, and it's been great. Currently got a 2008 f430. The only real cost is the service before I sell them on! Best way to drive amazing cars as a normal person, imo.

Simply mega cars but you’re not wrong on running costs with a previous service and a couple of bits costing over £12K and having not have confidence in the franchised dealer outside of the UK cost-wise it simply had to go!

The original Mk.I Conti GT was not a looker. The front-end is bulbous and the rear end is anonymous with tail-lights that are neither round enough nor square enough, kinda ruined the bits in-between which I have to say is actually good. The Speed treatment made it slightly better, and the Supersport is even better still, but the Mk.II facelift brought so much more panache in terms of styling, and is a handsome car even today. Not a fan of the Mulliner Driving Spec wheels here, though. However, the Mk.I Flying Spur is just atrocious in design. My friend called it a bloated Suzuki Baleno Saloon. Mk.II is a lot more cohesive and the current Mk.III is even better.

Yes, the interior is beautiful and feels special. And a big engine in a large car gives that “wave of torque “ experience. The body is pretty good though the rear details look a bit plain to me. But! I have sworn off VAG products. I loved my Audi and it was just a delight while under warranty. But it aged very poorly and suddenly, and didn’t love me back. The dealer loved me like a pimp loves a John. Then the independent German car service garage loved me when I turned my back on the dealer. I sincerely hope everyone who buys a used Continental GT has a rewarding experience. I’ll wave to you as you drive by.

I have been driving my 2007 GTC in dark saphire and magnolia leather interior for many years and more than 100.000 mls all over Europe and I have never had any serious issues so far. It gets its annual inspection at the local Bentley dealer and that's it. Of course this costs between 3k and 5k, depending on wear and tear if you want to keep it in an excellent condition, but besides that I have never had to spend a lot on it. Its a great car and a lot of fun to drive, even at high speed with almost 200 mph on the German Autobahn. Mine has a chip tuning and comes with 635 HP and an enormous torque of more than 700 Nm. I would not recommend to buy a coupe for less than 35k € or a convertible for less than 60k because it definitely pays off to buy one in almost immaculate condition, if you can manage to get such a rare example.

Easy to maintain, usable, backseat, plenty quick, but it seems the grass is greener on the other side. I still yearn for one of these British land yachts.

The problem is that at some point it will go wrong, that is when you find out that spares are hard to find (Boot Motors) and if you find them very expensive. Hence why neither my friend or myself have any desire to own one. Good luck to those that do.

£18,000 for a used Bentley? Considering what it cost new not that long ago, that should be a HUGE warning sign. How much will you have to pay to tackle all the deferred maintenance? Probably around £80,000. Even if you got very lucky and the car was well maintained, it will still hit you with astronomical repair and maintenance bills sooner or later. These might be beautiful cars, but let’s face it: Bentley and Rolls Royce are not known for Toyota or Lexus levels of reliability. I’m a mechanic and I can tell you from 33 years of experience that these cars are nightmares to work on, and the level and frequency of maintenance they require is something most people would consider too much of a hassle or too much money to waste. I You know the old saying: “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”. You can find far better cars to spend your £18.000 on.

  • @andrewharper4296

I understand your point but one of the reasons why these cars are so cheap is because Bentley produced so many of them. If they’d kept the production figures low it might be a slightly different story. Also Bentley went full on for the marketing drive at the time. Every footballer, rapper and reality star seemed to be driving one which probably didn’t help the 2nd hand values either. Lol. If you have tonnes to choose from it drives the second hand values down. A lot of them were also used as dailies so the mileages on some are super high. But yes for sure you need to have your eyes wide open when looking at buying something like this. However if I had to choose between a 2nd had Maserati or one of these I think I’d prefer the one with mainly VW parts. Lol.

Didn't like the styling and especially not the now-plastic grille. stiff ride, but very nice engine. Also, I'm a pretty short guy, but even getting into the backseats to begin with was a feat. then in there at 5'7" it was cramped. very nice interior all-around aside from the center areas, especially in two-tone blue, light wood.
