The lack of a mechanical door lock is, in my opinion, a safety hazard. If you can’t get back into your car when you need to you could be in trouble. This especially true in the winter or during a storm. The lack of a key to get into the trunk is also bad news. If you need jumper cables or other emergency supplies in your trunk you are out of luck if the battery is dead.
@mooreracer

@@doctorkdsify The drivers door key cylinder does in fact have a mechanical connection to the door latch on this vehicle. "Scotty" apparently couldn't take 5 minutes to look at service information (or look more carefully inside the door) to learn this fact. Instead he publishes a ridiculous video and convinces folks that "New Honda's are Crap". Likely the lock cylinder was not properly installed by the body shop when drivers side was repaired. Same thing happened to my civic. It was -30c out and I had just took my car for service. The ground on the battery wasn't tightened properly. And I couldn't get into the car. After 10 minutes it luckily started working again. After tightening the connection, never had that problem since.
I hope that customer didn’t have to pay diagnostic fees to those 5 “mechanics” that couldnt figure it out.
Ya its a pain in the arss but you need to check same year toyota celica to see if its the same thing. Id bet it is.
Last night sisters 2016 Civic fires up but steering wheel barely budges; dash indicators for traction control/wheel lock/low tire air and "brake system" lit up. Scanned 00300 code "Rear Propshaft Speed Sensor". Getting towed to shop today. Man I am hanging on to my little old Mustang for as long as I can, at least when something on it goes south I can for the most part fix it. More computer parts more problems imo
My 2020 Tundra - same thing. Dead battery at Sam’s gas station after changing tires. Car crippled and disabled and open to be robbed as I go get a new battery at Sam’s. Couldn’t even jump start it.😢

My Dad's 2005 Vette has the same problem. The only physical lock is on the hatch and it has broken multiple times locking him out of the car when the battery died.
I guess you gotta buy a well sorted older Honda. As for me, I'd put a sealed 12 volt (like you find in uninterrupted power supplies) in that door to augment the power going to that lock switch.
While I do love my civic, I admit these are real problems as owners we have to be aware of. Everything is do dependent on electronics.
Here's a trick I do with my Honda remote. They use a 2032 battery however you can stack 2 x 2016 batteries on top of each other. This produces the same Voltage but has more battery oomph available. The downside is a slightly shorter battery life. I've been using this method in both remotes for over a year now and it works great. Haven't replaced the batteries yet either.
@Argedis
Жыл бұрын
Actually you are producing double the voltage because you are stacking them in series 6 volts instead of 3 volts. That's why you get more 'oomph' but there's always a risk of damaging the remote since it was not designed to be used that way.
Scotty, is this the same on new Toyotas? I’m about to buy a 2023 Toyota rav4 just curious if I need to watch out for this. Thanks!
This happened on my 2016 Honda accord LX sedan when I came back to a dead battery. I had to call AAA to stick a bladder in and unlock the handle manually

You need the long bar with a J-hook at the end. It goes in at the upper right (or left) corner of the door, and you can use a small plastic pry to get that long bar in. I used to work in roadside assistance and sometmies I'd get a lockout call. And of course once you're in you're good to go.
My 16 Honda Pilot uses that same key, but it has the Rod for the Key lock cylinder. And it has a Manual Parking brake and the Manual shifter for the transmission. But it does have the push to start.
Scotty is right but I go more often with oil changes in the winter, even with GF-6 oil in my 2018 Civic with the 1.5T engine. I change it in only 3,000 miles in the winter.
The irony. Make everything lighter and more electronic to make cars more efficient and save the planet? How much fuel did the Triple AAA guy use in fuel to come out to resolve this? Times this by hundreds.

Thnk god for this video, i m only considering cars with dual option lock mechanism. Mech only or both.
Only one door to unlock this has been our issue with Honda. If we get an ICE storm here in Maine and we face the driver side of the auto to the east, it will glaze over with Ice and even with the door left unlocked, it will still oftentimes freeze closed. The otherside we often find locked because of the automatic door locks. It sucks that Honda is too cheap to install that second door lock on the passenger side
Was there not a mechanical key slot on the passengers door under the plastic cover?

I own the same model Civic but with the 2.0L non turbo. And this is the reason why I bought a 2005 Toyota Echo, 1 month ago. Still kept the Civic though. Just being used by someone else in the household.
A better idea than leaving the window rolled down is to wire charging wires to the battery. That way, if the battery ever fails you can find someone to hook jumper cables to those hidden wires to get your 12 volts in order to unlock the car and pop the hood. Then take the cables off and go directly to the battery to get a jump start.

No one is going to leave their car windows open all the time. That would only apply when you go off for a casual drive and can see the car. Any other time would invite thieves to break in. A mechanical lock is what is needed. I won't buy another car if the lock is electronic.
So how do you open the hood to jump the battery if you can't get into the car to release the hood latch when no power to the door lock system?

One more thing to check when buying a car. Disconnect the battery and see if the key unlocks the door.
I would say to always have a portable jump pack that will at least provide power to unlock the door and start the car to get to the battery store but what use is it if you cannot A: get into the car or trunk to get the battery pack and B: get into the car to release the latch to the hood to get to the dead battery

What do you think of the EverStart Maxx to jump start a car? I've used a 44.4 wh to jump several cars. That one died and I replaced it with a smaller 26.6 wh one.
3:25 when you said about dead battery I stupidly thought it meant an old school battery not the actual battery
I've heard carfax doesn't update in a timely manner. Sometimes an accident will show up a year after you bought the car and now you will get dinged if you ever try to trade-in.
It seems like the idea of "backup systems" is going out the window. There's a reason why all these smart home locks come with a physical key (which actually makes it easier to break into). Unless you can create a keyless system that can open the car when the battery is dead (say, at least 10x), then don't get rid of the physical key.

There's still a manual linkage but it's from the inside door handle. AAA / roadside assistance can still get in these using the long-bar into the window, then hitting the door lock toggle and pulling the door handle. I know because I used to work in roadside assistance.
Manufacturers are cutting corners EVERYWHERE! Many new cars now don't come with a spare tire and not even a simple dip stick for the oil. YET, the prices keep going up.
Wonder if a wreck was the real cause of that door not opening.
