I just purchased my first Porsche, a 993 narrow body, with 80K miles for $85K US that checked all the boxes with the realization that I overpaid but don't care. I'm now in my 50's, this was a car I absolutely loved in my 20's, now I have the financial opportunity to pull the trigger and I just want to enjoy and experience these cars for everything I hear they have to offer. just don't want to wait any longer especially when I'm too old to get in and out of this thing! p.s. thanks for the channel Will, love watching and learning from a new Porsche owner and subscriber!

Another great video Will, cheers. I joined the PCA before I bought my 993, they have a clever programme called “test drive” I was able to ask local AZ PCA members for advice on who to use for the PPI once I found the car I was interested in. This proved to be invaluable as I was introduced to an independent family run business who help steer me in the right direction. Not only did I get the car I was looking for I also found the perfect master mechanics to take car of my 993.

Back in June I finally found a great and affordable air-cooled 911, a forrest green 964 C4. But I was struggling with making the buy because I did not know where to bring the car in case of technical trouble. Porsche dealers are no option since the younger guys don’t know about the old technique plus Porsche charges approx. 200 USD per hour (here in Germany). Then I had the idea to do a Google Maps search for free workshops specialized in Porsche. To my surprise, I found a shop for air-cooled Porsche in the next town! After talking to them about the car, I was confident to make the buy and since love owning a 30+ year old air-cooled Porsche.

In general, I’ve found that Porsche owners tend to be discerning and want to understand their cars, beyond just keeping them running. I think word of mouth between Porsche owners (in PCA or other events) is the best way to find a good Porsche mechanic.

The best way to find a proper (new) master air cooled Porsche mechanic is a direct referral from a (retiring) proven master mechanic. Be willing to sometimes have to ship the car out of state for that, though.

Finding a Mechanic. I asked Will actually. He knew someone who had been pleased with a specific mechanic. Worked out well. Usually I do my own work but it was more cost effective to have customer Porsches in my garage getting detailed and let the mechanic do the big job on my 993. Basically referrals are the best way in my view.

Will I love this "Q&A" approach. Great comments from this group. To find "your air-cooled mechanic" nothing is more valuable than word of mouth to find your air-cooled mechanic. Forums I feel are also great resources too. And I agree about MW. I've met Magnus a few times-a really great guy honestly. He is laid back and to me made owning Porsches less pretentious and cliche'. Less a "status" and more a "passion". In short: he did improve the "cool" factor in owning one. Like many know, this guy was hustlin' clothing at an early age in his 20's in SoCal. Then, like all of us here, his passion for the air-cooled/early cars became a reality-racing, instructing and collecting. Then, magically, he used Social Media as a platform to create his brand, and connected the exact passion all of us share here! I think I started seeing him post up on Pelican in 2013 or 2014? He shared his resto-mods with great photos, and man did his vision take off from there! I would say the first wave of valuation for these cars really started in that 2011-2013 time. It seems to coincide for sure :)

Shortlist a few from referrals, word of mouth, online searches. Then start trying them out with small jobs like oil change, belt change, minor suspension work, etc. Talk to them before, during and after those jobs, assess the way they communicate, whether they treat your car with care, how they follow up on outstanding issues. Personally I try to maintain relationship with a couple of shops and spread the work around a bit. Different shops may have their respective strengths and weaknesses, and it’s often helpful to get second opinions on things you are not too sure about.

I do nearly all of my own maintenance/repair, however, I do have a "rockstar" mechanic when I get over my head. I found him and his shop by talking to other 911 enthusiasts (friends, PCA get togethers, C-n-C, etc) in my area. I found that there were really only a couple that kept coming up over and over again, this made it easier to find "my guy". Since then, my choice has been confirmed by talking to more people, even including service folks at various local Porsche dealerships, even they respect him and recognize his capabilities!

In regards to your question about finding a good air cooled mechanic, since I own modern Porsches and have a trusted independent shop for those cars, they were able to refer me to an air cooled mechanic who they look to for guidance on the older cars. After a year of ownership and several repair visits to this older gentleman, I feel like my 89 is in good hands. He is a second generation owner operator of this particular shop and has been great to deal with.

Hi! Love the channel and the facebook group. Im from NZ and prices here are hitting 6 figures plus (70k usd) I recently hit my 30s and was doing well in life so decided to add a 911 (82 911 SC widebody) to the stable. Basically I had to pay the high price to enter the market but I also believe all current buyers are confident you wont exactly lose money on these if you ever decided to sell in the future. On the mechanic side I have always worked on my own cars so have a decent sized workshop setup. I am going to self repair and work on mine as required. I am excited to learn about air cooled engines.

There is a local Facebook group here in Salt Lake of Porsche nerds. So there are several mechanic’s here in SLC that are great air cooled mechanics and you can source them from these enthusiasts. Don’t forget these era of cars can be worked on by you the owner! You can’t say that about the water-pumper Porsches with all the electronics. You also can pretty much be a novice on repairs and there are great BBS’s like Pelican, Rennlist, and others, who’s members can take these cars apart in their sleep. They are more than friendly enough to help you diagnosis the issue with your car. And, the good old search button on these sites will probably already have a thread on how to resolve your issue - these cars tend to have the same quirks. Lastly, there are tons of after market suppliers for parts on these cars as well as eBay to find parts. So, you can be your own mechanic.

I think there are many factors but I think it really started with Singer turning 964 coupes into $500,000+ cars. That created an increase in their values that have spread though all models of air-cooled 911's and now even the water-cooled cars like the 996. I am in the business and it still caught me by surprise.

I was suprised that I could get a COA from my local Porsche dealership (Porsche San Diego) and even more suprised when they told me that they had Porsche certified aircooled mechanics. They are actually training young mechanics to work on our classic cars because Porsche saw the enthusiasm for aircooled and the need to keep them on the road. I think a major reason for the prices skyrocketing is the collector car market as a whole. There are so many wealthy car collectors out there buying any sort of classic car to put into a museum type collection. I think it is like collecting pieces of art to them. These aren't sports car driving enthusiasts, but it affects the entire market value on these cars. Anyone who owns one now wants to get collector top dollar for their car when they sell it and people are willing to pay it. These cars are meant to be driven not stored.

With social media’s role in the prices skyrocketing, I don’t think the people buying the older 911s actually understand the cars. There are soooo many instagram influencers, young people who create curated feeds. Bauhaus and modernist era architecture is trendy now because it fits the current aesthetic; older 911s seem to fit that trend too. We saw this happen initially with the yuppies driving old 80s mercedes sedans. My opinion is that the people buying these used cars are buying because it’s trendy not because they are true porsche or even car lovers. They’ll move onto the next trend within the next 6-12 months I think.

Start to be your own mechanic and learn your car. Wrenching on these seems to be the forgotten other half of this whole experience. This community is so good that the info is all over. The cars are simple compared to a modern car, that’s why we love them. They are the RC car a lot of us built as kids. Because of that, and that they are older, they require a more old school approach of problem solving and fixing vs read code-replace. I’ve met guys that never changed oil before that months later rebuilt steering racks. A group of guys who met up at cars n coffee, show up at a buddies place and drop an engine. Every little bit helps and before you know it, you have a wide range of skills. Go slow, learn best practices from others, clubs, or talking to pro Porsche mechs, and have fun. And always be conscious of your own limitations and when it’s out side of your scope.

Finding aa good mechanic is tough. I have had only four shops (tires and body aside) that have worked on my 993 over 25 years. The first of course was the dealer I bought it new at, and while the dealership has changed hands, is my default 25 years later, in part for convenience they will pick up/drop off (either me or the car), and another shop (R.M.G.), that did my engine rebuild and suspension, and some other stuff along the way which is a great shop, but need to have my car towed on a flat bed back and fourth as they are a little bit of a drive (for coordinating a ride). The other two, one of which was a local (literally) German mechanic that I used for a short while and also use d him on my Dad's 635csi that I inherited) as he was in local in town, but felt like he was learning on my car so I stop using him. The other was the new local dealer but they don't have the mechanics that know the oil cooled cars (where as the other dealership specializes in "classics").

I have a number of antique cars and most are, well antique. Air cooled Porsche's are antique, but they are usable everyday. The power is good, brakes are good and fuel economy is decent. They truly are a classic with compromises in technology only. Not many cars can pull that off. Even 60 and 70's era fords, chevys and dodge require alot of attention and still do not have the same drive ability, without modification anyway.

If when you go to the shop you see a classic Porsche up on the lift that the shop took from rusty basket case to pristine correct showroom condition…you’ve found your shop. If they can restore one then they’re going to know how to troubleshoot yours. If they employ their own metal worker who makes 356 dashes by hand…you’ve found your shop. If the mechanic starts pointing out all the little details that are going into an engine build, even though the owner would never know the difference once it’s put back together…you’ve found your shop. If the shop knows and uses all the people that specialize in rebuilding and perfecting the things like oil pumps, transmissions, gauges or getting just the right frosted finish on a set of Fuchs, etc.,…you’ve found you’re shop.

For the basic things and smaller jobs I prefer to do much of this myself, however for larger items a competent mechanic is critical. I'm certainly not doing any clutch rebuilds, engine dropping, etc. I've bounced around to a few local ones here in Colorado and just haven't found exactly what i'm looking for. They either don't communicate well, don't take care of the car the way i'd like, or are backed up several months because they have 1 guy. After about 2 years of air cooled ownership, i'm still on the hunt for the right one that I trust. Trust is key. Will they do the work the right way? Will they take care of the car the way you want? Will it leave with things not put together the right way, missing parts, dings in the side panels, and not as clean as when you dropped it off? Any of those things are deal breakers for me. Referrals are likely super key, however I don't know many people in the Porsche community quite yet.

Finding the right mechanic is easy if you are located at a please where the Porsche density is high. How it is in 10-15 years, well then you might get a container and bring it to Germany for overhauling. By the way, 3 Porsche are fitting in a large container if fitter correctly for cost sharing. Apprentice ship in mechanic is still a professional young people are interested here in Germany although younger people are interested in high tech as well but don’t have the Skillset for a academic carreeepath here in Germany. I think Porsche is a natural to the novice who doesn’t have the breadth of knowledge to appreciate Alfa Romeo 105s, Lancias, Lotuses of the same vintage. These cars may offer a similar or better “slow car fast, analogue” experience (for less money). But the new guys just want a Porsche because they don’t know any better.

If you don’t put the time in up front you will certainly put the money in later. Most important: Don’t listen to 90% of the BS on forums and stay away from Dealers unless it is a Porsche Classic Center. Funny, we bought our 1987 911 targa in 1991 with 28k miles for ~30k, a month before our first born… because we knew we wouldn’t pull the trigger afterwards. We both liked the look of it and also wanted a GSD before kids, but that took another 20 years and a couple kids later. During that time the value went down, down, down… I didn’t care , we liked the car, it was our land boat, weekend fun car. Now the value is up, up, up with 38k miles, and we don’t care… as long as our feet can operate the clutch and can steer the car…. We are gonna drive it till we pass it along to one of our kids. BTW our oldest took our GSD (German Shepherd- good boy) when he moved out, but the car stays.

I keep seeing a brown 911 in the middle of all those Porsches. I am almost positive it is Erik Lind's of Sports Purpose Garage, true or false? To find mechanics go to car hangouts like cars and coffee. People love to be helpful or at least run their mouth and look important. Porsche clubs. Just ask on a forum you will get a ton of responses. Again like I said- PEOPLE LOVE TO RUN THEIR MOUTH AND LOOK IMPORTANT. 🤣 I know FB can be a pain but I am part of a private FB Porsche page (ironically enough I think it's run by the guy I was asking about above) that is invaluable for everything Porsche. Some of the guys on that page know everything.

Step two, get to know the seller and the car history. Build that relationship and bond both with the seller and the car. Step 3 find your local area Will Brooks and buy them a beer/coffee and pick their brain. You will eventually find a good air cooled fanatic mechanic in your area. Subscribe and pay attention!

I can tell you what happened: HYPE happened. Around 2007 I bought my first Porsche- a 996 Carrera for a great price. At this time you could get a clean 964 for around 30k, and that's in the Bay Area (now rusty Targas with no engines are selling for 25k). At the same time RWB started making a huge splash which caused a lot of younger people to buy up all the air cooled 911s. Immediately after that, older 911s became hip and trendy, thanks to social media and KZreadrs. People with lots of money jumped on the bandwagon and drove up prices, and started buying multiple models, like 930s, 964s and 993s. While I do love them, I just don't equate the amount of car you get for the price you pay. My 996, solid deal. The 997 RS? Worth every damn penny (and I got a deal). But i'm not overpaying for an air cooled Porsche, especially knowing what they costed 10 years ago.

Or it could be that you're just upset that you bought the most undesirable iteration of 911 instead of buying an aircooled one when the prices were low. I've driven multiple 996s - a major drop in quality and the performance isn't particularly stellar unless you get a Turbo or a GT2 which are pricey. The C4S is about on par with my '12 WRX which is rather sad.

  • @SF_Native

@@Synchromesh123 lol, i'm definitely upset that i slept on those prices. However, in my honest opinion, I have the greatest 911 made. 997 GT3 RS so I have zero regrets. I may pick u an air cooled, but it won't be for some ridiculous price. You won't find them on BaT or craigslist, but they're out there. Also, the 996 has shot up in desirability, due to the inflation in the 911 market. I always like the 996, and really could care less if anyone else did or didn't.

@@SF_Native 997 is ok in my book and is the only watercooled I would consider down the road if ever. I would not touch a 996 with a 10 ft dipstick but whatever floats your rubber ducky. You're right about it though, it did go up but not because it's a good car.

Near identical path as Rolex sports models. This is why everyone is attracted to the 996. As ugly as air cooled owners think it is, it's the value king of the 911. Since aftermarket resolved many of the short comings of the 996, we'll see what happens to prices.

Just about every 911 review I've seen the owner wearing a Submariner, Gmt or Omega speedmaster. You should mix it up and do a video on the Porsche or general collector car connection and wrist watches. Would like to see it. Both the manufacture of electric batteries and their disposal have significant environmental impacts. And recharging electric cars is largely powered by coal. So where are the environmental benefits?

The 911 is the poor man's 928. Sorry - I gotta call balls and strikes. the 928 was European "Car" of the Year 1979. No other sports car including the 911 has ever won "Car" of the year. The 928 has won 2 production car land speed record at Bonneville (1986 and 2020) - the 911 has won none. Magnus Walker has started his 928 collection - its Now or Never for the 928 still the biggest bang for the buck in Porsche's line up.
