Here's What Happens To Your Brain And Body When You Go Vegan | The Human Body

Ғылым және технология

Thinking about skipping out on meat and dairy? Going vegan is becoming increasingly more common, but is it actually good for you?
Following is the transcript of the video:
What happens to your body when you go vegan?
Thinking of making the jump to a vegan diet? You’re not alone.
In your first few weeks, you may feel especially tired. Without meat, vegans often have a hard time getting enough vitamin B12 and iron, which helps make red blood cells and transport oxygen throughout the body. But it’s nothing a supplement or handful of nuts can’t fix.
You may also discover that foods don’t taste the way they used to. That’s because your zinc levels have taken a hit, affecting your overall sense of taste and smell.
On the plus side, expect to lose some weight right away! After switching, new vegans lost an average of 10 pounds over a 10 month period. Plus, a 2009 study found that average BMI was lower for vegans than all other diets.
Another benefit that you may experience is a healthy decrease in cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart disease risk. In 1999, a study showed that vegans were 24% less likely to have clogged arteries from saturated fat and cholesterol.
While your arteries are better off, your bones may not be. If you’re like most Americans who get their daily calcium from dairy products, you may see a dip in calcium levels.
But you can combat this simply by boosting your intake of kale, broccoli, and other leafy greens. Plus, cutting out dairy might make you more … regular. 60% of humans don’t have the enzyme to properly digest lactose in dairy. The result is cramping, bloating, and even diarrhea. Swapping dairy with high fiber veggies will make bathroom trips a lot more productive.
Like any diet, veganism has its pros and cons. Be sure to research and see which diet is best for you.

@@blahizake you don’t need supplements. B12 can be found in fortified plant milks. And iron is in just about every dark leafy green out there. @@Slachelle1123 Complete garbage. It’s well established that anything “fortified” pales in comparison to its natural source, if not being outright detrimental to overall health. This is especially true in synthetically created versions of these naturally occurring nutrients. Heme iron is far more readily available to us than anything found in a plant. Any health practitioner who’s worth anything recommends animal sources of iron over plant sources of iron. Because it more available to us and doesn’t destroy our digestion like a lot of iron containing plants might for some. Let’s face it: you’re a carnivorous animal trying to eat an unnatural diet because animals are cute or you bought some agenda.

@@blahizake only reason animal protein has b12 is because it’s fortified into their food too. B12 comes from dirt, unless you’re eating dirt your b12 is not a natural source, or you can supplement it if you want it more natural. Clearly someone doesn’t know much about nutrition

MOSQUITO PRODUCTIONS You need to check your facts!!! People who «get their calcium» from dairy are not really «getting» anything. The problem is, that when we drink milk, our bodies become too acidic, which in turn kicks of something called metabolic acidosis. This draws calcium from our bodies and promotes osteoporosis, thus leaving our bodies with less calcium than we originally had before ingesting the milk. But yes, kale, broccoli, spinach etc. Are all good for boosting our calcium levels as opposed to dairy which just depletes them.

  • @SPR-ITE

    @SPR-ITE

    6 жыл бұрын

ThatMan Rey Plants are not sentient. They do not have a central nervous system and thus do not feel anything. Our canines are not useful for anything but to more effectively eat fibrous plants. We are not «made» or «supposed» to eat meat, as we do not have the proper anatomy to digest it. Our intestines is many times longer than that of an omivore and our stomach acid is far to weak to properly digest meat. Apart from that, it is not ethically right to eat animal protein. Some claim that some animals are raised well and killed «humanely». This is utter bs... Taking a life, be it with our without pain is and never will be humane. We do not have the right to govern the lives of anyone other than our own. I understand why you see things the way you do, because I used to be just like you. Just give it some time. You’ll get it eventually.

And you clearly didn't have good facts since we all know milk is too acidic for our bodies so the bones have to release calcium to neutralize it... There's a reason the biggest cow milk-drinking countries have the highest amount of osteoporosis (brittle bones)... I mean do your research, come on...

bmcnutr.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40795-016-0064-8 Conclusions Phytate intake was found to inhibit the bioavailability of iron and calcium from the diets of pregnant women. Moreover, phytate was one of the strongest inhibitory predictors of calcium, iron and zinc bioavailability. ajcn.nutrition.org/content/78/3/633S.long CONCLUSION The iron and zinc from vegetarian diets are generally less bioavailable than from nonvegetarian diets because of reduced meat intake as well as the tendency to consume more phytic acid and other plant-based inhibitors of iron and zinc absorption. However, in Western countries with varied and abundant food supplies, it is not clear that this reduced bioavailability has any functional consequences. Although vegetarians tend to have lower iron stores than omnivores, they appear to have no greater incidence of iron deficiency anemia. With current methods, it is not possible to effectively evaluate the influence of vegetarian diets on zinc nutrition because there are no reliable and sensitive criteria to identify marginal zinc nutriture in humans. The effectiveness of trace element supplementation of vegetarian diets has not been demonstrated, and any recommendations for supplementation should consider potential adverse effects, including possible competitive interactions between minerals. Research to further define the functional consequences of low iron stores without anemia and to sensitively detect marginal zinc status is needed to detect and prevent any possible problems associated with lower iron and zinc absorption from vegetarian diets.

Her sister on the other hand is border line diabetic, hypertension, suffers from arthritis, sinus problems and over weight. The difference diet can make is very dramatic.

I went vegetarian a while back for a couple months (my goal was to go vegan) and noticed that I felt a lot better. I didn't feel tired throughout the day, I had more energy than I did when I ate meat. My skin improved, I didn't get pimples. My headaches decreased. Omg when I ate, I never felt sluggish when I was done. When I ate meat, I would most of the time feel sick, and even felt like I had to throw up. Cutting meat out was one of the best things that happened to me. Unfortunately I did start back eating meat, but the good news is that I'm trying to go vegan this time.

All the while, most of them are raised in extremely cramped or stressful environments. There are plenty of other tasty foods and alternatives. @Ram-Jah I think it's all to do with cutting out everything that produces high levels of mucus , particularly dairy of course. As you'll know, it's the mucus that irritates the sinuses and blocks the air cavities in the sinuses, making it harder to breathe and produces phlegm etc ! Cutting out the causes thus helps improve sinuses health ! I'd also highly recommend the use of Hepa Air Purifier, it will make a difference and most noticeably give you a better night's sleep

I've been dealing with chronic fatigue for over a decade now; I was told I needed "more exercise" even though I walked about a mile going to work and back home, and my job before was in retail so I spent all day walking and being active in the store, even coming home some days with sore legs and feet. I would take caffeine supplements, red bull, coffee etc., and I ate moderately healthy (I actually love vegetables) but nothing worked... Except going vegan. I'm a new vegan and within the first few days of eating vegan-only foods, I felt so much lighter on my feet and no longer feel drowsy after meals. Again, this happened within DAYS of going plant-based. There was never a period in time where I felt fatigued after cutting out animal products (at least, no more than usual, and again, I almost immediately felt better).

It wasn't until recently that I found out that was all a lie. There was one point where I cut out dairy from my diet and next thing I knew, my face cleared up from zits and blackheads. I've been trying to eat plant based for a while now, but it's been quite a challenge since the rest of my family either can't seem to stick to it or flat out refuse to. I wouldn't force it on them. It's really up to them to decide whether or not they want to. Luckily my parents are supportive. I noticed a positive change whenever I've been eating plant based food. My energy levels are up, working out has been easier, and my overall mood has been better.

From my personal experience (I’ve been vegan for over three years). 1. I did not feel tired the first few weeks of being vegan, in fact, quite the opposite. I felt full of energy and life. 2. I’ve never been deficient in b12 and the only time I was ever deficient in iron was when I was a meat eater. My iron levels are through the roof as a vegan. 3. Why do non-vegans seem to think that vegans just sit around and eat handfuls of nuts all day? Why do they think that nuts are the vegans elixir of health? Nuts are great but eating too many can be bad for your health. First off they are very calorie dense and most of those calories are coming from fat. Second, most are very high in saturated fat. Just my anecdotal experience. :)

Are still vegan? Iron is stored in the body as ferritin (in the liver, spleen, muscle tissue, and bone marrow) Iron levels are high in vegan blood because antinutrients in the diet prevent it from being properly absorbed. If you have high iron in blood you may have very low bone and muscle iron. Phytates (phytic acid) in whole grains, seeds, legumes, some nuts-can decrease the absorption of iron, zinc, magnesium, and calcium.

I was about to be put on insulin, but only 48 hours into going vegan my fasting and post prandial levels went down to perfect levels with no more big spikes and have stayed there since! The secrets are going whole food, low fat, plant based, getting a wide variety of foods (I follow Dr. Gregor's Daily Dozen check list), and a high quality B12 supplement taken every day.

Alhamdulillah, after I realized the negatives and went back to eating meat and restricted carbs and sugars, my life and health has improved significantly. I'm vegetarian but trying to go vegan. My mother doesn't support me going vegan (I'm thirteen and live with my family). She says I should still drink cow's milk cause it's healthy and has calcium. I don't want to be disrespectful to my mother by going into discussion with her, so I asked her and my father if they could watch "earthlings". I'm pretty sure they didn't watch it. I also don't have any vegan or vegetarian friends. No one I know in real life is vegan. My grandmother doesn't take seriously not eating MEAT. She asked me 'if we don't eat meat, then what should we eat?'. And I replied 'plants'. She then made a "tjoeri"( a sound you make with your mouth that used to be an insult in the past). But anyway, I tried going vegan today and I already failed. That melted cheese I ate looked delicious so I ate it. While I was eating it I thought to myself 'should I really be eating this'. I then stopped. What I'm worried about is will I be getting enough nutrition. I talked about it with someone close to me and they advised a dietitian. I didn't say anything back. I want to go to a vegan dietitian, but I don't know if any exist in my country. This comment is getting way to long now.

elizah halfh... Ask your parents to watch "What the Health" or "Earthlings" with you so you know they watched it but even if they do they may still resist... You can also tell them that things like almond milks can have twice the calcium of cows milk and vitamin D as well... I'm a huge fan of the "Almond Breeze" brand chocolate milk and they have vanilla and plain as well... You can get all the nutrients you need on a Vegan diet if you eat properly plus you can get a Vegan Multi Vitamin or b-12 supplement (recommended by most Vegans if you eat no b-12 fortified foods) for piece of mind if you choose... Just study our ways a bit and learn... It's pretty easy to learn to eat a delicious vegan diet that gives you the nutrients you need but you do want to learn to make sure you get what you need... After all potato chips, French fries, vegan chocolate, and lemonade could be a Vegan diet but if that's all you ate it still wouldn't be a good Vegan diet... If you want to learn more in depth there are Vegan dieticians on youtube and Vegan doctors... NutritionFacts.org is a good website and also has KZread videos on KZread and is run by a doctor and his team of researchers for you to learn more in depth... There are plenty of others as well... ;-)

Im not going to sit and hate on meat eaters and I hope they dont do the same to me for being vegan however this video is quiet inaccurate. The same way a non vegan would drink milk for calcium we drink plant milk for calcium. Zinc can be found in most foods we regularly eat. The defficitency scares are very strong propoganda to push people away from a vegan diet. I think people need to be able to talk about this topic with all the facts not call vegans and non vegans names. That doesnt really do anything to help either cause. The truth is one diet does fit all humans. Just as grass feeds all cows. Diets are regulated for certain beings. You dont have to convert its your body but there is much to consider for a more positive affect on the planet, your own personal health and the animals effected. If you dont believe in the cause, research or not, no can make you change your diet. Extreme vegans have good intentions but som people have a hard time conveying the message across to people with different opinions.

Thank you for responding which such a balanced argument. I am all for veganism and would one day love to join, most of the time. The strongest argument is the effect it has on the planet for me. If I want meat and animal products produced locally, from animals that lead happy lives I don't see a problem. The main problem with meat eaters is the amount of meat, the price they pay and the quality of the product and the animal's life. Instead of pushing veganism, I think a different angle would be to push protection of animals, transparency, and choices. Don't allow unnecessary harm to animals or caged animals, but to give people the ability to choose how far they are willing to go and pay for that animal's wellbeing. I don't quite agree with the statement that "one diet fits all humans", which is my gripe. There are plenty of things one person thrives on and another doesn't. Look at allergies, intolerances, etc. Especially as a Dutch person is adjusted to different types of food compared to an American for example, it's not that simple.

Same reason I've been put off getting pets from breeders and using plastic bags from the grocery store when I have my backpack as an easy substitute. When I want to be fancy I'll have the impossible burger or beyond sausage but I'm perfectly satisfied w my rice and peanut butter and trader Joe's spring rolls and pasta and spinach and hummus... Some major issues with this video: - Those cases in which Iron, Zinc or B12 run low are presented in a way that suggests that this happens to most or at least many new vegans. It doesn't. It happens to some (not even all) of the ill-prepared vegans. Most are just fine. - Bone density is actually weaker in those people which consume a lot of milk. This was found in study after study. If you go by some very basic and simple rules you will be just fine: - Eat diverse within the plant realm. - Supplement B12. - Get checkups from time to time. The more advanced version is to track your food intake for some time, and then you go and optimize your food intake according to your findings.

I didn´t lose a single pound since going vegan (being a healthy weight from the start- so its good to know you're not going to lose any muscle if you eat enough) and never felt tired either. Also, my sense of taste has changed- I crave less salty foods and less candy. My skin has also become clearer. I know it's different from person to person- also because there is no such thing as the "one" vegan diet. You can still eat crap and feel sluggish, or you can eat only veggies and have severe deficiencies. But there is no argument in saying that "going vegan is bad for me". It might be hard for you. You might not like the idea of change. But you cannot say that going vegan can't work for you.

I've been vegetarian for over 30 years and very close to eating completely vegan at that time. No eggs or butter for over 20 years, and then completely vegan for over 10 years.... Never felt tired.... On the contrary, I felt young and alive with tons of energy and clarity of thought. B12 vitamin comes from the ground which is where the animals get it. A supplement works beautifully.... The benefits outweigh any drawbacks, which are very few!! It's a WIN, WIN, WIN.... Good for the planet, good for the animals and good for humans....!!!

After the first week I noticed decreased B/P. Second week less inflammation. At this point I cannot see myself going back to carnivore eating. Plant based eating, I've discovered, is essential for my personal health and well being!

I always vomited eating fish or meat or the smell of onion and garlic in my food (BOOOOO people may shout at me everyone including my friends do) but mind you, people are gonna hate you BUT it is gonna be one of the best decisions you'll ever take in your life. I am always bullied by friends(some of 'em) Mind you, your body is gonna improve a lot (if you eat correctly, I am trying not to say this detailed) BTW I get less affected by diseases ngl, (people think I am small for my age) BUT what about those boys who are smaller than me or have *more* diseases than me. Idk 'bout 'em. Btw I am a 11 y/o. These are my thoughts *KILLING ANIMALS IS NOT GOOD AT ALL.*

This video just kind of outlines what stupid people do with the diet, and these people are who I always hear stories of from people I know. "oh my niece did that diet for 2 months, she almost died...." "Oh, my family friend tried that diet, he quit after 3 months when he passed out and got hurt" and then I tell them "oh yeah, that's because they didn't eat enough calories or do any research so they can be healthy. I've been doing it longer than them combined.

I tried vegan for 2 years. It had it’s strengths but more weaknesses…. Now that I’m more educated on the importance of not only protein, but the BCAA known as Leucine, I know why I had problems as a vegan. It simply doesn’t provide the necessary amino acid profile for healthy muscles, unless you supplement heavily.

You can add nutritional yeast in many different ways to your diet for your b12. Also when you have a healthy gut the bacteria in your stomach creates the b12 for you but many meat eaters don’t have healthy guts due to the lack of fiber in their diet. Heme iron found in animals causes oxidative stress vs non heme iron that doesn’t which is found in many plant sources (legumes, nuts, seeds, grains and sea vegetables are all great sources) so iron is really not an issue for vegans. Calcium is also found in seeds, nuts, legumes, grains and sea vegetables. Every nutrient under the sun is found more in plants than animal sources and the animals that people eat get these nutrients from their vegetarian diet.
