My grandpa drove this exact car - he wasn’t chauffeured around in it. He was a dealer (Chrysler-Plymouth) and loved to drive. Just loved cars. And the Rolls-Royce Silver Spur was the ultimate car to own....especially in Los Angeles. His was identical. It was black with an ultra thin red pinstripe, had slightly different wheels, a light grey top and matching light grey interior, however, he had cream colored lambs wool floor mats instead of grey. I remember him driving it cross-country from L.A. to Philadelphia with my grandma and my aunt and uncle. That was his idea of vacation: driving a Rolls across the United States. They had a splendid time, of course, but after dropping off my aunt and uncle in PA, grandpa decided he and grandpa would simply FLY home to Southern California so they could just be home in a day. The Rolls-Royce appeared in our driveway a week later, on a flatbed truck. He’d shipped it from Philly to Rusnak Rolls-Royce in Pasadena (where he’d bought it) to have them service it and then return it to the house!!! 😎 That was a serious baller move in those days...

I was a London chauffeur in private service for the same chap all through the 1990s and drove this model as well as a Bentley Mulsanne and latterly an Azure. In 1993 I persuaded my employer to cough up for the RR driver's school mentioned, it was based at the factory in Crewe and was a 5 day course costing £1200, a lot of money back then but very much worth it. Being a chauffeur was like any other job with good days and bad, I once worked for 20 straight hours, had 3 hours sleep and was then on the go for a further 18 hours, had a straight month without a single day off etc. But I also used to have all expenses paid trips around Europe delivering the car to various places in which he had decided to holiday. Some great experiences

Interesting, Rahvis Chihuahuas! One of my parents' associates had a "maid" (actually a chauffeur/bodyguard for the kids), who was a highly-trained chauffeur (for military VIPs). They got her out of prison (where she'd been sent, for murdering her girlfriend), and bought her a beat-up old SEL, which is what she'd been trained to drive. She could do some amazing things with that car. EVERYbody wanted to carpool with THEM. Once the kids were driving (and had been through Krav Maga), the family set this woman up in her own security business, where she's done WELL.

It's the thoughtful details that make the car seem elite, like the lambswool carpeting, the oil level button, the lighted trays for the backseat passengers, the letter holder, and so on. The quirks aren't just bizarre features or rushed engineering; they actually enhance the experience of driving and owning the car.

It's mind-boggling how Rolls-Royce and Bentley were selling these vehicles for $300,000 and Mercedes was selling their high-end s classes for $120,000 plus but you could literally walk into a Lexus dealer in 1996 and buy a fully loaded LS400 for about 70 80 grand and keep in mind they had similar options and they used real wood real leather and their V8 made 260 horsepower and 260 torque and insults to injury you could've ordered air suspension factory and to this day Lexus still cares about there cars quality and reliability. If there was a slight imperfection on a Lexus during assembly that car was put back on and fixed correctly Thats why Lexus quality 33 years later you still see them looking sharp

20 something years ago my dad had an old Rolls Royce silver cloud. Bought it dirt cheap, only had engine problems and fixed it. I used to eat McDonald’s in the back, oblivious to what I was in.

@Steve Prince Storage plays major role. If you always park it in garage, the car is preserved very well with minimum effort from the owner. Average cars that are parked outside, they suffer from dents, moisture, rust color damage, generally they suffer from the effects of UV rays which destroy the good looks of any material: leather plastics, color.

I’m nearly 17, meaning I will soon be driving (I live in the UK), and insurance is mad for new bloke drivers, and I’ll have a Ford Ka or a Skoda Citigo that’s in a low insurance group for the next couple years. But once insurance is lower, I’d love something like this, less costly to buy and maintain, but an early 2000s S-Class or a 2000s E-Class estate or a 2000s XJ would be perfect. Classy, cheap to buy, comfortable, available as an auto for motorway driving, rly elegant attractive cars ♥️

Buy a Jaguar XJ300. Luxurious, fast and quintessentially British. Make sure though to have a few grand left for when it inevitably breaks down, also be aware that there’s a black hole in the fuel tank.

Old luxury cars like a 2000s merc may be cheap to buy but they're not so cheap to maintain. Once something goes wrong which it probably will it'll be costly to fix.
