The road traffic has become a real mess now with these extremely bright white LEDs. I enjoyed previously driving, now it has become kind of stressful for me because of the ever-increasing amount of white LEDs that make me feel uncomfortable, hurt my eyes every second and strain my nerves and eyesight. I noticed I started avoiding night rides whenever possible.

@@warden9876 If it hurts your eyes, it indicates that your eye muscles are undeveloped and need training. The pain comes from your eye pupils being enlarged so that they can see better at night, but are then suddenly forced to rapidly contract to adjust for the sudden increase in brightness in your view (caused by bright lights from an oncoming vehicle). This sudden contraction causes discomfort in normal eyes, but cause slight pain or extreme discomfort in eyes with poor muscle response. Luckily I'm just the guy who can help you. By wiring me a small fee of 10 000 bucks, I will send you an address where a bunch of totally not shady bald men will tie you to a tree at night and then drive a lifted truck close to your face and proceed to switch on the truck's 30000Lm LED high beam headlights at your eyeballs for several hours until your eyes are bulging with muscles. Because you seem like a cool dude, we'll even throw in a free additional flood light that will hyperflash at your eyes while the truck runs its headlights. We will glue your eyelids to your eyebrows so that you are unable to blink during the procedure (like they say, no pain no gain).

I have 2016 GMC pickup (same as a Silverado), and it has the worst lights, by far, of any of the dozens of vehicles I've driven over the years, including ones from decades ago. They are the worst for a few different reasons (dim, poor light distribution, nonsensical difference in aiming point between high and low beam so that one or the other will be useless no matter how you align them). A coworker of mine has a '16 or '17 Silverado with the same headlight problem (s). HORRIBLE lights on these newer GM trucks! @@ravn_blade Kind of a pointless rebuttal, there, for a few reasons. First, these are company vehicles and neither of us had any choice. Second, no one that I know is aware of such an option on these particular trucks and I'm not convinced it was ever available. Third, the guy at the auto parts store says that replacing one of those HID headlights that you speak of runs up around $1,500. And fourth, if the lights on our trucks really are just a base option, is it really too much to ask that they be even half as good as the sealed-beam lights from 30 years ago that STILL can be replaced for just a fraction of the cost of the new versions? Seems like a pretty useless result when today's high tech and high cost provide a light that's far worse than any light made in decades. I see no excuse for that. And don't even get me STARTED on the backup lights on modern GM pickups, which also are the worst (in the category of backup lights) that I've ever seen in 50 years of driving.

A couple years ago I lived in Roswell (Georgia) for 7 months, owning an NA Blue Miata and maaaan, it was terrifying. Not only because of their "high-up" in the air highlights but mostly because people wouldn't notice me when driving on the lane next to theirs. I once had to drive off the highway to not get killed by a soccer mom on a minivan, scared the sh** out of me. So yes, being run into and near death experiences were a constant but I do miss filling my tank with around 15$. Same costs like 80$ back at home. Oh, and I managed to go kayaking all the time taking the kayak on the miata as well ahah Check this photo of my miata next to my neighbour's and you'll have a sense of scale ahahah (ibb.coSLASHrmCxwBZ)

Things I do at night: if I’m in drive thru waiting behind a car, I’ll turn my head lights off. If I’m stuck at a train I’ll turn them off. If I unlock my door I’ll turn my lights off if I’m parked somewhere that it might blind people. I actually had a gentleman tell me I was the 1st person to ever turn my lights off. I was at Barnes and Nobles and he was sitting outside. I felt bad just unlocking the van since I knew he would get lights right at him. If I’m parked on the side of street waiting on someone, I turn them off. I think yous guys get the picture lol.

  • @AlexandarHullRichter

I use that as an indicator. If my lights are on, I'm ready to move without other warning. If it's dark and my lights are off, I'm parked. For me, it comes from being an airplane enthusiast. Airplanes only have their flashing lights on when they are powered up with parking brakes released, and therefore ready to move without other warning.

Dave Micolichek I have them on when I drive, if I’m in line at a drive thru, I turn the headlights off but leave my running lights on so that I don’t blind the person in front of me. When I’m stopping at a RR crossing and in park, same thing, I turn the headlights off but not the running lights off so that my lights aren’t shining in others eyes. I guess I should have further explained the situations. TL;DR I drive with my lights on unless I’m in a situation where I can have my running lights on to not blind others.

  • @jo-vf8jx

    @jo-vf8jx

    4 жыл бұрын

Dave Micolichek you are correct that I don’t actually blind people, but there are some people that have a sensitivity to bright lights. And it’s not like I turn them back on when there is no one in front on me, and it depends on the situation at RR crossings. I mean you’ve never been behind someone who’s lights are shining right in your view causing discomfort to your eyes(and no I don’t mean at a stop light or stop sign) you’ve never gone down the road to encounter a vehicle sitting idly at the curb waiting for whatever reason with their headlights still on and it distracts you or makes your eyes hurt? To each their own when it comes to different types of courtesy I guess. Have a wonderful night.

jo Im genuinely curious (no trash talking), if you’re in a drive thru, wouldnt your headlights aim at the bumper (or slightly above) of the car in front of you if you were close enough? I also think you mentioned a van so maybe the headlights are high enough to illuminate someone’s cabin while you’re behind them. I drive a sedan and most people here drive SUV’s so my low beam’s tend to aim way under their rear window when we’re both stopped (say at a red light or drive thru).

Almost a decade ago, after watching a night game at a stadium, I was driving on a two way road and a truck facing me had the lights brighter than my car's high beams. I thought that it had the high beams on. So, I turned my high beams on just as well. The truck's driver response was immediate with high beams brighter than the stadium lights. I was like "what the hell?" I had to make a complete stop because I couldn't even open my eyes for several seconds and could've gotten in an accident. Since then I've started to notice that more and more trucks have insane headlights. Nowadays sedans also have these crazy lights. Toyota is the brand that I have to complain the most about because I have many friend Camrys and Corollas from 2019-2021 which have these crazy dual/auto headlights as bright as my 2003 Honda Accord headlights. Everytime I ride my friends Toyotas at night, their headlights are always all over the place as if Toyota want the drivers to notice every road detail 180 degrees angle, 2 miles far away. Let's be real: How fast do you drive to have the need to see obstacle 2 miles away, 180 degrees around from your car?

So I feel it necessary to explain that Lumens don't measure the brightness of a light source, they measure illumination on a surface. Light sources are measured in Candelas. 1 candela shining on an area of 1 square meter will provide 1 lumen of illumination.

  • @cymond

the colour or brightness of your headlights really does not matter so long as they're aimed correctly and you have the proper sized bulb. The absolutely worst offender of blinding headlights are those who use incorrect bulbs in reflector housings. The most common mistake is people who are replacing dual bulbs (hi and lo combo bulbs) with an LED hi and lo bulbs. Some dual bulb LED have 3 LED clusters, at 10 o clock, 2 o clock, and 6 o clock. The will scatter the light everywhere and blind oncomming drivers, pretty much 24/7 high beams and you'll notice your highs make almost no difference. If you look at a dual halogen bulb it has 2 fillaments, one behind the other. the LED must mimic this layout if you want the correct beam pattern, a cluster at 9 and 3 o clock and another behind that at 9 and 3 o clock. When it comes to projector housings though it is much much simpler. You can put any damn light in there at any brightness and any size. If your headlight is properly adjusted, it wouldn't bother anyone.

Well, the USA has always been 'behind the curve' on lighting...even the car used i this video had the absolutely ancient SAE beam pattern, which has very diffused 'edges'; the European standards, on the other hand, have a sharply-defined pattern, with an easy to see upper edge, so that you can clearly see if your low beams are too high (or, too low!). In addition to automatic levelling, which seems to be required in Europe for HID lamps, even 'family cars' often have an adjustment control, on the dash, near the headlamp switch, for headlamp aim adjustment/correction whenever you add a lot of weight to the car, for example. Also, in Europe, we are seeing headlamp systems that automatically provide 'dark spots' in the headlamp beqm pattern wherever oncoming cars are detected by a small camera (often part of the driver assistance systems). In the USA, there are still some states that don't even allow the European headlight pattern, something like 60+ years after its adoption!

I had a 2010 Mazda 3 with HIDs, and that car had the absolute most frickin awesome feature: you could manually adjust the angle of the low beams with a switch on the dash. It had four settings (0-1-2-3, presumably corresponding to the number of rear seat passengers), and the higher the setting, the further down they went. I'd keep it set to 0 or 1 on unlit roads, depending on speed, and at 2 on roads with streetlights. I have a 2019 Golf now, and the only things I wish this car had are a smoother shift throw, and an easy-adjust low beam switch.

1.) That's still an aiming issue, not a height issue. Aiming regulations are different when the center of the headlight reaches a certain height. The 2 inch drop rule doesn't apply for tall vehicles in the USA. Some of these SUV or trucks trucks have a switch to lower the headlights on the fly to not blind traffic. Problem is, most don't use it or don't care for it. So i propose this should be an automatic feature when a lower level vehicle in front is detected, the headlight lowers its aim automatically. 2.) Side mirrors and Rear view mirrors should come with mandatory auto dimmers. It's not the solution to misaligned headlights, but it will drastically cut down on the annoyance and safety hazards of driving with glare hitting our eyes.

Most cars you see in America still have separate bulbs for the low and high beam. Typically, if the orientation of the bulbs are horizontal, then they'll be the inside bulbs. If they're vertically oriented, then they're usually the lower bulbs.

@@Snattle_Rake yea not helpful when even low beams cause extreme blindness. I hate driving around new cars at night because they are too damn bright. The Government should immediately ban this shit.

THANK YOU. I recently bought a truck after being a lifelong sedan guy. One major reason, I was tired of being blinded on dark roads by some of these ridiculous headlights.

Most of the time when I drive at night if im in traffic or something, basically I have a car behind me and I cant escape it, 9/10 times the headlights on the car behind me are brighter in front of me than my own healights, like literaly I can completely turn off my headlights and I wouldnt lose any visibility of the road at all.
