I still have my 1982 Mustang GT. I bought it new. Still in great shape. All original except the Carb and front seats and updated Stereo system. 4 speed car. Runs great.

Wow...so cool. I had the 79 in the mercury Capri configuration and then bought the 87 GT. Loved them both for different reasons. The Capri was the 2.3 and was fun to scream around in. The GT, I Treated like a baby because cops of the day loved to single it out.

Being a Mustang enthusiast and spending time around a lot of other Mustang enthusiasts, the '79-'93 cars are overwhelming referred to as a Fox Body. It's not technically accurate but neither is the Five Oh / Five Point Oh designation and for whatever reason people generally don't nitpick that nomenclature. Anyways, the first car I bought was a '90 LX with a 5.0 and 5-speed. Owned it for over 18 years but I bought a brand new GT back in '15. I kept both cars for around four years because of the sentimental value I had for the '90 but the '15 did almost everything better so that sentimental value waned and I sold it. Becoming of driving age (driver's permit) in the early '90's I fell in love with the '87-'93 cars and still get excited when I see one out in the wild since that is a rare occurrence these days.

In the beginning of this clip it is mentioned that Ford may not have an electric Mustang at all.. Well then since the clip is posted recently this year in July then how come they fail to talk about Mustang-e ?

As a teen in the 80s, a 5.0 stang was every high school guys dream car. And nothing sounded better than a 5.0 fox body with flowmasters. I eventually got a 89 5.0 lx later in life and regret trading it for another toy.

I got my LX Notchback for $2500 about 10 years ago... Running, driving 5.0/5spd. Easily my best automotive buy to date, and I found it by sheer chance.

@@BruceLee-xn3nn I know the platform was improved and tweaked but I don't understand how, had to be more than just the rear being light. Maybe that mixed with inferior tire design. My 96 gt does just fine in the rain

My grandfather owned a 1989 GT from 1993 until he passed away earlier this year. It is now my car and it is also the most fun car I've ever driven in my life. I've driven some fast cars, too. Between his other toys (67 SS396 Chevelle, 68 Camaro with a 454, which if it ran right might give it a run for it's money in pure fun, 87 Grand National) and I work at a dealership so I've driven a new 5.0, Scat Packs, and even a Terminator just today. They may all be faster, but not nearly as fun as that little 5 speed Fox I'm not a Mustang guy. But I am a Fox body guy. All because of that one car. I've also heard people say they never called them Foxbody (just '5.0 Mustangs') until the new Coyote 5.0 came out but I seem to remember hearing the term all the way back in 2006 as a 7 year old.

Why is the 86’ GT always skipped over in every Mustang book or video? I had an 86’GT for 36 years! Love that Fox Body.

My grandparents have a 1992 LX Fox Body Summer Edition. It's still in beautiful condition. I drove it at one point, it was a fun experience. My dad also had a '79 notchback during his High School days.

My grandparents had a monster '52 Dodge.... Yep... took the train from Seattle to Detroit... to do a factory pick up. The Purple-Blue Cool factor = 0. Quality = 0 (especially when you consider the bumpers falling off in '60. Sad part... his sons (my dad and uncles) never stopped repeating "that damn car killed dad". Yeah. Good times... good times..

When these came out, I went down to my friendly neighborhood Lincoln-Mercury-Ford dealer. I looked at the Mustang and at the Capri. Very nearly the same price but I thought the Capri was a little nicer. So I ordered the basic Capri with the Turbo four cylinder and four speed, a/c and Am/fm radio. About eight weeks later, the dealer calls me up and says my car is there. I go to the dealership and look at the car. No turbo! For some reason they had halted production of the Turbo cars. I refused the car and asked if I could reorder it. He said no guarantee about the turbo. So I reordered it with the 2.8 V-6. It really did turn out to be an excellent car.

The 87-93 are the best Fox body Mustangs and my personal favorite. The sound of the 5.0 can never be topped.

I bought (and custom ordered) a 1987 Chrysler Lebaron turbo coupe, premium edition. What made it so rare, especially in Canada 🇨🇦 where I lived was the fact it had a 5 speed manual transmission. This was not on the option sheet but the dealer penciled it in anyway. They didn’t think the factory would except the order, but did! It must have been added to the Lazer Daytona run. 3 months later it arrived at the Toronto Chrysler dealership much to the amazement of the stuff. It was a stylishly fun car that you never see any more. I ran it on premium gas, did all the required maintenance on it and got over 300,000 Km out of the original turbo and engine.

I bought a 1990 5.0 LX coupe brand new and it was an amazing bargain back then. It was simple, dead reliable, and would leave much more expensive German cars for dead. I autocrossed it, had it on many tracks, and even drag raced it, and it just needed oil changes and a set of wiper blades the entire time I owned it. I regret ever selling it. It was rough around the edges, and even a bit crude, but it was like an eager pit bull puppy always wanting to play and show off its strength. It could outrun almost anything up to double the price even on a road coarse or twisty road. The Camaro was its main competition but on a greatly inferior weak bendy platform that favored flashy form over function. You didn’t need a mullet to own a Mustang and it would fit 4 adults in comfort.

I have a 83 mercury zephyr. Shares a lot of parts with the mustang, which helped with my 5.0 engine and suspension upgrades.

My first car was a 79' it was 4 colors reeked of gas caught on fire and I could Freddie Flintstone it...I bought it for 75 bucks off my older brother...loved it.

I had never heard of the Ford Durango until today, and now I really want one.

@@devinbiz That's true. I still wish we could have gotten the Ford Falcon utes and the Holden Commodore utes from Australia! They could have been made into better updated versions of the Ranchero and El Camino, respectively!

I think everyone has a soft spot for the Fox body Mustangs. My first new car after graduating college was an '85 GT. I'm probably one of the few that thought the factory slapper bars on the 82/83 GT's (and first year SVO) looked pretty damn cool. The picture of them hanging off the car on the R&T cover at 7:10 is hard to miss!

personally I think the FOX era mustangs look like standard sedans.....you might as well just get a sedan at that point.... or a Ferrari or something cus American sports cars died mostly in the 70's in design and due to the gas shortage but by the 90's they finally came to their senses it seems.... eww my first car....I don't get how anyone found these "cool" even the convertible just did not look very Mustang to me....the Porsche 911's in the 80's was far more sporty ad the Lotus Esprit's was another or every model of Aston that I've seen was/is sporty lol on the other hand in the 80's the Corvette was king and those models still looked like a vette....and though the newer models look nothing like the originals you can still track the evolution to the current Corvette but Mustang has a lost chapter in the 70's where they went insane and tricked everyone into buying sedans lol

My college graduation car was a ‘86 Mustang GT. As a newly minted Naval Officer it was a cool car to drive across the country from NW WA to Athens GA. No AC, so I had to sell it in GA since my wife was pregnant.

I will forever have a soft spot for any foxbody whether it's a mustang, LTD or even a foxbody continental having owned two 85 GTs and a LTD LX. I want another one now...

I remember when the '79 Mustang came out. It was the right car at the right time at the right price for many people. They sold like crazy and were EVERYWHERE within one year! The Mustang and the Mazda RX-7, introduced in April of 1978 as a '79, were the two popular affordable enthusiast cars in 1978 for the 1979 model year. Both cars are now going way up in value too.

This car was and is still a great car. I still see these all the time.

This was my first car. A 1980 Cobra. It had a lot of problems. One was I was 17. However there were some design flaws. The turbo had bad lag. It was during the 55 MPH days. It took forever for the turbo to kick in so it was basically a small four cylinder with power. Then just at the legal speed limit it would burst to 80. Then the speedometer would stop because of a stupid federal law at that time (the fact that foreign made cars did not have to obey that law is what made it go dumb to stupid). Also hitting the breaks after the turbo kick in would cause the engine to choke. The solution was to keep your left foot on the clutch while right foot would switch between the brake and gas to keep the engine from stalling; while shifting gears. I got use to it, however it would freak out a lot of passengers.

Eh, you know, a lot of turboes were just laggy back then. (Part of why they often wouldn't sell manuals with the turbo in some brands) I understand they take well to putting like a modern little twin-scroll thing on there, though.

@@OllamhDrab computers help too. My Mustang was the first car Ford put a computer in for the engine; I learned that from a Ford engineer. It was also something that needed replacing. The car had standard and metric parts on the engine. The engine was definitely designed by committee.

My Grandmother Had A mid-size-fort LTD Fox body I was building a mid-size LTD Fox body platform derby car but they had that 3.8 in it and that thing was interesting to build

My favorite fox body is the 87/88 Thunderbird. My dad had one when I was a kid and I fell in love with that car. I’d love to see you do a video on it someday.

Vanilla Ice had a Fox Body Mustang 5.0 and based on what I have heard he still has it.

My first car was a base 79 Mustang hatchback with an automatic and the 2.3 in line four. It was orange with checker board interior. 😊

My second car was a 1981 Fox body that I inherited in 1988 after my 79 Regal blew a seal, dumped its oil, and seized while I was driving down a rural highway. My Mustang had the 2.3 liter naturally aspirated four cylinder that made a whopping 88 horsepower. And it didn't have AC. Kinda miserable to drive in Tallahassee, Fl. It's a Fox body, btw. That may not be Ford's nomenclature, but it is what these cars are nearly universally called. The commenter in your other video is wrong.

Having grown up during this era, I remember these Mustangs well. It is with mixed feelings though. My parents had an 81 model with constant mechanical issues. I spent too much time on the side of the road in one. Still fond memories of other people's Fox Body Mustangs.

I bought a brand new 1992 mustang LX 5.0 5-speed in strawberry red back in the day. I sold it 2 years later. I’ve owned 25 vehicles since then but it’s still my absolute favorite. I still miss that car.

86 GT (with t-tops) was my first car in high school, that my dad and I rebuilt from a wreck. Loved that car, wish I still had it. Values are definitely shooting up... the last decent one I saw for sale online a few years back was selling for around $10k, way more than they went for new back in the day.

I used to own a fox body mustang. It was fun to drive and easy to work on. I loved it dearly and would like to own another one.

The 1984 SVO had an 85 mph speedometer, but the individual increment slashes went up to 145.

The Cobra R is still one of my favorite mustang designs. It looks aggressive and sporty without going overboard.

Nice video..I am one of the Mustang fan letter writers that saved the Mustang. We were devastated that Ford was going to make our beloved Pony car a front wheel drive 4 and 6 cylinder. Ford actually replied to my original letter about 4 years later, thanking me for my support. I have an 87 Mustang coupe that is heavily modified , and has been with me sice 1989.

Still have my 79 Cobra 5.0L and my 89 LX 5.0L. Got the 79 my junior yr of high school when i was 16 and the 89 in 94 when i turned 21. Both are in my driveway.

Have an 85gt. T tops. 5speed. 4bbl. Had it since new. Still runs and looks pretty good for 37 years old and 169000 on the clock. Don’t see them much anymore.

I like that generation, especially the later model years, where it looked slick and fast despite the fact that it couldn't compete with the euro sierra RS cosworth or even the escort RS turbo in terms of performance...just imagining THAT era mustang with a cosworth engine would be something to drool over.

I remember seeing the SVO Mustang at the dealers. I was 15 and LOVED it! If I had the money I'd go find a all original 86 SVO.

I had a '79 Turbo Indy Pace Car. That car was a blast!!

We always called them Fox Bodies, even back in the day. Had a lot of fun in various Fox Body Mustangs in the 80’s and 90’s! Enjoying my S197 these days. Feels larger and heavier, and while more powerful than the “5.0”, the 4.6l isn’t really fast by today’s standards. But the car is still a ton of fun - though I think the Fox Bodies are more fun, but maybe that’s memories of my youth talking.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a sports car in any configuration, but some of the EFI 5.0 models were an incredible 80's musclecar value. In fact, I remember reading comparison tests in both Motor Trend and Car & Driver that year after year named the fuel-injected 5.0 non-GT cars as the best performance value available. They were significantly cheaper than Camaros and Firebirds, and quicker as well

there were actually 2 other engine choices for the 1979 model year that you did not mention; a 2.8L Cologne V6 which was replaced mid model year by the older 3.3L Falcon Straight 6 when the Cologne, Germany engine plant could not keep up with demand for the V6. actually had a 1979 Ghia Notchback that was built March of 1979 and was equipped with that straight 6.

I think the whole cologne issue with fabrication had less to do with not being able to keep up demand and more to do with the fact the cologne was actually more powerful than the 5.0...

In all honesty, the FOX platform in the beginning look like a sporty Chrysler K- car. Though the spoilers make it look noice....

My dad had an 82 Mustang 5.0 GL (basically the LX for 1982) 4-speed hatchback. He gave it to me in 1993 or 1994. I should have never gotten rid of that car. My dad passed in 2013. I miss him and this car...

Had an 85 and a 92. Shocked at the current price of these things. Always looking for a 90-93 GT.

Dad had a '79 Fairmont and my older brother an '80 Mustang. I was a kid back then but i remember that they felt almost the same.

My dad is in a musical band and his bandmate had a 1983 GT 5.0. My dad and his band were due to play a concert in Redwood City, California, which was 7 hours away from home. The band leader had bought a Chevy Tahoe but the fuel pump busted going up a hill and the bandmate had to use his Mustang as Transportation. The trip was going well until the Mustang started breaking down in Salinas and finally broke down in Prunedale (about 9 miles from Salinas; it broke down because of the transmission). The band left the Mustang at a gas station and we all piled up in the band leader's 1987 Chevy Astro. The band did the gig and returned for the Mustang the next day and we returned home with the Mustang in tow behind; My dad also bought a 1984 Mustang LX V6 convertible for my sister and I to learn how to drive in and one day, my sister, a friend of hers and I took it and drove it but sadly, it did not make it up a steep hill (the engine was leaking oil and it seized) and we had to sell it to the junkyard...

I bought a used ‘92 LX 5.0 with a manual trans. The night I picked it up from the guy, there was a snowfall of a couple of inches. When I pulled out onto the main street I did a complete 360! I mentally planned my short trip home and started from a stoplight in 2nd gear to keep from spinning out. Got home and threw anything heavy into the back for traction. I kept it only one winter but it sure was fun in warmer weather!

I bought a 1979 5.0 stick in 1987. I used to say that they car was all front end. Incredible power and a lot of fun to drive. Always like the Fox body style.

I’ve fell in love with Mustangs when I came from Cuba as a teen, had my first ‘98 v6 5 speed manual in red. I updated the exhaust with dual flow masters and it sounded awesome. Had a lot of fun. Now I have my ‘14 gt premium manual and every time I take her out for a spin, she puts a smile on my face. Let’s see what the future brings but I hope Ford doesn’t kill it or messes it up!!

This is my 87 Notchback she was a basic 4 cylinder . 4 years of work I tolddly rebuild her into a 5.0 and panted her 93 cobra red I got her in the summer of 06 and still have her today . And very well maintained.

I had a 1983 Mercury Capri, a Mustang clone with a rear bubble window in place of Ford’s flat offering.

My 2nd car was an 85 Mustang with a 2.3 4 cylinder and 4 speed manual. There was 2 different manuals one from US and one from Europe. I had the European one which I had to fix one little plastic part 4 times. Finally figured out that it was supposed to be a stopgap piece that was supposed to break to save the transmission. Built a metal piece to replace it and never had a problem after that.

I'm 69 now and grew up with and owned a '67 Stang; wasn't a fan of the '80's version. I really like them now and it's amazing to me how popular the Fox BODY is today.

My first car was an '85 LX convertible. I loved that car so much, gutless as it was.

As a teenager I had a 1983 GLX Mustang convertible. It was the 3.8L 6 cylinder engine with automatic. It was a cool car for sure. Alas I was a teenager in the late 1990s so it was a bit older when I owned it.

I owned an '89 white convertible but with a 4-cylinder that I bought less than a year old with only 24,000 miles. It was a great car that I never had one problem with.

I never owned a Mustang but had the opportunity to drive an 87 Mustang at a Bob Bondurant track event. Rode with him as well. That was my introduction to performance driving. I had a college friend with a Mercury Capri version of the original Fox Body and knew several with the Mustangs.

I loved mine but had timing belt and rocker issues, constantly had issues, but when it ran, it was fast! Had a buddy with an '82 also and we would race along windy mountain roads in Santa Cruz county in the late '80s.

The 1987-93 mustangs were my favorite. I wanted one in my teens but never got one. I’m surprised to hear that they weren’t a better selling model. I remember seeing them everywhere when I was growing up. In my opinion these were the best looking cars to carry the mustang name, next to the first edition.

I remember my friend had a 83 GT which in itself was a awesome handling car . I remember my friend and I going to the Ford dealership in 84 at around 9pm . We found an unlocked 84 SVO with the keys in the seat. I was so tempted to take it for a drive. I didn’t know how to drive standard then. I wonder if I had put it away in a garage with 5 miles if I would be charged for GTA today . An unregistered 84 SVO with 5 miles. Can you imagine the value . I would have taken the tires off .

I had a brand new 85 GT in black. Loved it for 15 years until my daughter was born and then bought an Explorer. Have to admit that I did like those 80s F-body cars, especially the 84 Trans Am with those Recaro seats.

I had an 82 Mercury Capri and then a 90 Mustang GT. Both great cars, both hatchbacks.

It’s fun being a 20 year old in 2022 with a 1990 LX 5.0, always get asked about it by boomers.

The foxbody is my favorite mustang era. If I had to choose I'd want the 1982 with that beautiful Four eyed front end. Black or Cherry Red. I always wanted one as a teen. The 5.0 302 was legendary and had a cult following. In my early 20s I got a chance to own one myself. I found a 88 GT Convertible. Despite it's many issues I loved that car. It needed body work that just wasn't affordable to me during that time. I miss it dearly but I'm sure one day I'll find another. You can't put a price on great memorys

Great video. Always loved the look of the GT Hatchbacks with the rear window louvers. Seemed to be a really popular look back in the day. You see some on current Mustangs, but not as many.

As a kid in the 80s got a 1/25 scale 1983 mustang gt model kit as a Christmas present.

When I was looking for a first car, I wanted a performance model like I learned on in the Sears Driving School in Texas (V8 Camaro RS from the later 80s). The Fox Mustang GT was one of the cars I considered. I always thought they were kind of stubby looking, but aggressive with the later 5.0 and even the SVO turbo four. They just didn't sit with me for some reason and I ended up buying a 70 Pontiac Firebird off one of my teachers (a base V8 before most of the crippling emissions). That one suited me. Long, low, sleek and quick. No air, but the optional rusty panel lightening to gradually shed weight. Had that car for five and a half years and loved it the whole time. If I hadn't found it, I could well have gotten the Fox. And that would have been cool.

We loved referring to both the Mustang and the 7oz Budweiser bottles as the Pony , I agree with Ford going with the gas engine, as an electric pony just doesn't sound like a badass muscle car. I also like to make a request. Can you please do a video on the International Scout? I owned a Scout II in the late 80s that I purchased used for only a few hundred dollars. (Back then I didn't know International made passenger cars). Though the vehicle body was very boxy and a rust bucket, the drive train and durability made it reliable and impressive off-road. It was a little FWD monster.

I just put my 1990 GT back on the road after 8 years of sitting. A 270,000 miles Texas car, original one family-owned car bought in Michigan and Returned back to Michigan. It's a Texas sun faded paint and interior solid car. I just put a 700.00-dollar paint job make over Ratstang look. The headliner I removed and replaced with a 5-dollar gray tarp glued on to the original headliner backing from the car. I was going for the rustic survivor look and I hit the jack pot. I used House of Kolor blue epoxy primer on the top of the car, gray primer bottom and Dupli-color Matte finish clear coat over the whole car. This was a budget build and it worked out just fine for me.

I ordered an '81 Cobra, At the time it only came with the turbo 4 and I was not excited about that to say the least, but, especially optioned to my choosing (midnight blue metallic, almost black, t-tops, Recaro seats, rear window louvers) it was going to be BEAUTIFUL. During the build I was notified the turbo 4 was discontinued and would I mind the V8 instead? I was excited to get a V8, but that was before I knew it was an emasculated 4.2L with a two-barrel carb. Oh well, the car was still BEAUTIFUL. At stop lights I had to act like drag racing was beneath me because there's no way I could beat any car with even a remotely sporting bent, but, did I mention? I had bought a 1993 5.0 LX 5 speed in 1994 it was blue with grey interior, non- hatchback, trunk model it only had 13,000 when I got it, unfortunately I was getting many tickets in it, and I could only afford a lawyer to fix them so many times. It was nice! I wish I could buy the exact same car back in 1994! Good video as always!

I never owned one myself, but a buddy of mine has owned at least three Fox Mustangs. He still has the last one - a '93 LX notchback with a 5.0 in Nineties teal. As for rarity, it should also be mentioned that the high-performance Fox Mustangs were relatively affordable as new cars. And as such, they wound up in the hands of inexperienced young drivers looking for a thrill. Knowing the sort of driver I was in my twenties, it's probably a good thing I never got one; I probably would have gotten myself killed in it.

Best car ever invented they are sexy looking 2 door sports car with high potential performance aftermarket parts for them and yes the 80s Fox Body is one of a kind car.

The Fox Body is my second most favorite Mustang of all time, after the 1964-68. The revised design from 1987-93 is the Fox Body that looks, moves, and sounds like a true muscle car. The peak horsepower of the 5.0 in the late 80s made the lighter LX fastback very fast for its time. Those GT convertibles are so very attractive. The sound a 1989 Mustang 5.0 makes with a manual is one of the best exhaust notes of all-time. Fox Body Mustangs are easy cars to play around with and have become common at drag strips in the Small Tire and Street Car categories. The car's value has been rising steadily for the past 5 or so years now and are becoming more common at car auctions. Last month I got to see a rare low mileage 1993 Cobra in excellent condition with everything original. I was outside of a gas station when I heard it before it pulled in to fill up on 93. I got to talk to the owner before he took off with a bit of tire smoke before gunning it with the manual and loud V8.

I once had a 1987 LX Mustang 2.3L 5 speed model and even though it didn't have the 5.0L, I absolutely loved that car and wish that I still had that car to this day and would love to have another fox platform based Mustang again one day.

I owned a 1986 LX and a 91 GT . Just like all the other FORDs I've owned over the years they were riddled with electric problems but still we're tons of fun to drive I had a buddy who had a police version for some reason I think it had a chip or something and that thing was fast

It’s mind boggling how anemic were those engines back in the 80s.

My 1st car was '79 Mustang. I bought for $500 in 1989! Black on black with a nice little spoiler.

I have owned two Fox Body Mustangs both 5.0 and both with manual transmission. My first Fox Body Mustang was a Black 1988 GT with T-Tops. My next Fox Body Mustang was a Burgundy 1989 Mustang LX hatchback. 😁

My father has some special edition '84 or '86 that was reworked for Ford. It's numbered 600 something out of 1,000-1,010 (I forget the exact number). It's a soft top. It needs an alternator and new soft top but otherwise in good condition.

To comment to your question: I'd never heard the term "Fox Body" until I started watching car guys on KZread, and they used it in reference to Mustang, early to mid 80s T-Birds(the fastest chicken in the south), and the last gen of Ford LTD. I've always had the impression that car enthusiasts came up with it, not Ford.

It was the chassis platform, it first began with the Fairmont. Much the same as the Chrysler K-car, or GM X-body and A-body

Excellent video. I liked the footage, graphics and all the other information. It was truly an interesting car journey. I think it was interesting the small facts you threw in as well. Thank you for doing a grand job. I hope your new career is working out just fine. I would like to see some of my GM faves on videos on this channel. Do something on some Oldsmobiles: 98, 88, Custom Cruiser, Toronado, Buick Riviera or new Oldsmobile like Intrigue... You should go look at Ford Australia and see the BF Ford LTD and Ford Fairlane and AU Ford LTD and Fairlane. Those cars was discontinued in 2007. They are worth a look. The look on those cars clearly was derived from the 1988-1994 Lincoln Continental. Thank you.

The Fox platform mustang is a car that I desired but haven't owned yet. I appreciate the editing and placement of key details that guide the viewer along with what is being said. Your videos are done so well that I like the production more than some of the vehicles being shown.
