Wow this hit me hard, when I saw you talk about the movie, I stopped and downloaded it because I like Edward Norton, then I watched it a few days later, it was good but what came next hit me hard. My mom found some old letters of mine today and I started to read them. It was back from high school, dated 2003, from a girl (classmate and yes we wrote to each other a lot, even during classes :) that I liked but we both had too much bad shit in our lives to focus on each other, we were close to just pack our shit and escape our lives, move away somewhere together.. and in one letter she describes how just a few days before moving, she was in front of my house, shouting my name but I didn't respond so she went home. I knew she would come, so I told her to just come up, I left the gate open but she said she can't just go into someone's house without notification... weird, oh yeah, cell phone calls were expensive and calls were based on minutes and the minutes expired every 30 days so most people had phones but nobody had minutes to call.. so she went home and I remember I was waiting for her but my room is far from the street so couldn't hear shit. Few days after this, I had to switch schools and she moved to another city. After this I got a letter from her, she told me where she moved and she hopes that I'll visit her and that she regrets not entering my house that day because she thought we had something. I knew we had something but we were never alone in a room, that's why I told her to come to me. The new school brought too many new things in my life, so many new people that I kind of forgot about her but man it hit me so hard when I was reading those letters, I blame myself now even if back then I blamed her. "This life came so close to never happening."

You can always do something now. I routinely tell myself it's too late, I screwed everything up. To this date I see many aspects of the decisions I've made, the things I've missed out on due to anxiety, fear, or capitulation and wallow and think about what a loser I am. What could've been. What someone else would've done with the same opportunities, and I think to myself that I just can't live with it. There's this horrible guilt that comes with knowing that I was once _this close_ to making a massive difference in the world, _this close_ to becoming a millionaire, and that I fucked it up; whereby if someone else had that opportunity, they'd have seized it, ran with it, and truly changed the world. Or, at least lived out their life stress-free. Then, I get up and do what I can with the next day. Beats doing nothing at all. I find something to dig my teeth into that allows me to forget about the many, many, many past failures & bad decisions. and those things I dig my teeth into give me a reason to be alive. It'll give you one too. Along the way, I run into things that give life meaning. And with any luck, less regrets than what existed before. Best of luck!

Actually, what he is really good at is telling exactly one side of the story and making the rest of the story seem immaterial. All of the right to repair bleats ignore the simple economic fact that the public is unwilling to pay higher costs for products that are easier to fix. Companies build consumer products to meet what the customer demands. With phones, example, it's size, weight, water resistance, performance, etc. You can make a phone easier to repair, but it's more expensive to do: You have to build the case in a way that allows it to be opened and closed and still be water resistant. You have to find a way to hit the weight, size, and so on that the consumer demands. You have to go for connectors and such that are meant to be disconnected and reconnected repeatedly. Suddenly, your phone is more expensive, and someone comes into the market with the same phone specs, lighter, more compact, at a better price... without the ability to replace the battery in a few years. The result? That phone gets a big part of the market. The other part is that most companies don't want to get dragged into having to stock and supply parts for their products at a retail level. The costs related to having to keep every piece of every phone model you ever make in stock for 10 plus years is insane. Think of a company like Samsung who release dozens of new phones every year. Imagine what it would look like trying to keep parts and sell them at retail for each of these devices. That would either be reflected in the cost of the parts, or more likely in the up front cost of the phone. Consumers are again unwilling to pay a significant premium for it. So while Louis tells great stories, he's doing it in a vacuum. Would you want to pay $200-$300 more for your iphone, have it weigh more, be a little larger, and so on, just so that you can MAYBE change a battery in 3 years time?

@@OldManBadly, manufacturers slowly raise the expectation of what a phone should have, and teaching us what it is we want, along with a higher price and a more lucrative margin, just as in the auto industry. Apple is the leader here. I have gone in the other direction. My last iPhone was the 6S Plus. Recently I sought out and purchased the Android phone I am using now, a Samsung Galaxy 5S, for roughly fifty bucks. I chose it because it is one of the last to have a removable battery, and also knowing that I can upgrade the OS to a later version as needed. It does everything I need in a communication device and hand held, save impress people with my disposable income. And I feel free to use it without a case. Paying a thousand bucks for an exquisitely designed and made piece of technology and then wrapping it all up in a bulky protective case makes me wonder why people who buy, say, a Piaget watch don't do the same. My Galaxy is polycarbonate and replacement parts are cheap. I expect to be using it for a long time. That's a lot of bang for my buck.

@@OldManBadly You won't convince anyone as a consumer that we are better off with a single outlet and source of knowledge on repairs because it literally makes no sense on a basic level - do I want to be forced to choose from only one service provider in a monopolized market where they can abuse me as a consumer based on my lack of knowledge and options or do I want to be able to choose from multiple providers existing in a market where they will have to actually offer competitive pricing to earn my dollar? How is your proposed scenario worse than the current reality where customers can be lied to by manufacturers and told they need to pay anywhere from half the cost of a device to full replacement for simple repairs that should cost a fraction of that price because no independent dealers are given access the tools to fix it?

I recently had my battery start to inflate in a Galaxy S8+, went to a Samsung store, they quoted me 500$ here in Australia to order a battery in and repair it. This would mean, I'd be without my phone for a month too, at the very least, and the data would be fully wiped. Oh and they also said they wanted me to give them all the unlock patterns if there were more than one. That alone was a huge breach for my personal privacy that Samsung employee would ask me that for a battery replacement. Went down 3 stores in the area I was in, to just a normal guy doing phone/battery repairs. He had a few batteries in stock still, charged me 70$ total (time to open phone and carefully melt the glue off of the case, and then re-assemble everything as it should, and battery). Clean job, no data wipe, he only got me to unlock the phone while I was there to check a few things, re-locked it, and then asked me to unlock it again when done. Total time: 30 minutes. No data wipe.

I replaced the battery on my LG V30 a couple of days ago. Just following a guide from KZread. It only took like an hour (including removing and reapplying my dbrand skin) and I was a bit scared of damaging something, but it went well and wasn't that hard. Hardest thing to do, aside from getting new glue for the back glass, which is optional) was to get the damn battery out, which was needlessly glued in, despite there being not a millimeter of space for it to move around inside the device. I'm not experienced with phone repairs, I've only built computers and repaired/modded handheld/game consoles before, but it was really doable. If your phone has a glass back, I can only recommend trying this or similar repairs yourself. Just don't use a heat gun like I did: It warped the colored sticker on the underside of the glass in one spot, so without the skin my phone would have a small, but visible imperfection now. A regular hair dryer is sufficient for softening the adhesive and shouldn't heat the device up too much.

@undefined: Yes! Louis a few years ago didn’t know he was going time be “a player... “ I am so glad he remains humble and relate-able which is part of his charisma and ability to communicate so well. I’m also happy just for him too in HIS MOMENT to shine. It’s now abs coming up for a good long while (years); he’s more than ready for it. He’s like an OLYMPIC ATHLETE - if he’s in the zone he just performs like irs muscle memory he’s calling on. He’s helping (nearly) ALL sentient creatures and Mother Earth. To think that HIS integral involvement in RTR (R2R) was “this close to never happening” (thrcname he gave his video of his speech today) seems unthinkable today but it was the stars aligning. And now big donors bc it dies taje miney- so thanks to all the big donors for helloing out . It takes money to amplify even the best most creative mind and voice. Some decent rich folks out there after all? Seems maybe a few Mavericks who recall a time when people took pride in maki g good products that DID last and facilitated repair by anyone .

Our job is to bring relief to the customer by helping fix their issue on regards to their repair. But we never tell them the struggle it took for us to get to that point. If you do not convey the struggles to the customers they will never understand that it requires a great undertaking to recover data or get parts and schematics to repair our devices. By signaling the problem we work our way to finding the solution to make the struggles less and repair more viable for the customer.
