Here Lies: Your Outrage Against Zoella and Alfie Deyes - The JaackMaate Effect | TRO

Intro:
Today is the day in which I definitely take on something more challenging, not because it’s a hard topic to decipher, not because it’s even particularly controversial, but because I expect it’s going to dispute a prevailing narrative which has been accepted by many spectators, and also defending people who typically, I’d have no interest in defending, but here we are, half a year later, and after a fair few controversies, I think it’s high time we have a discussion.
This is Zoella, and this is Alfie Deyes, they are a pair of British vloggers, they are partners, and they are both relatively successful. Zoella is a lifestyle vlogger, who focuses on a variety of vlogs, primarily leaning towards the more beauty sort of content, make-up tutorials, item recommendations, all that jazz. Alfie Deyes, also known as PointlessBlogVlogs, makes videos on a broader range of topics, covering all sorts of things going on his life, which clearly appeals to some demographic.
These guys are proper classic KZread stars, back from the early 2010s, they’ve been around for a while. I’d heard of them, especially Zoella, she’s kinda inescapable, but have never taken sat down and watched one of her videos. I’m not quite her target audience.
They’re smiling, and happy, and often they’ll do collabs with other people who are smiling and happy, and everyone’s laughing, hahaha, joy to the world, isn’t everything fantastic?
In case you haven’t gathered, I don’t like them very much, nothing personal of course, but it’s no secret to those in my inner circle that I’ve loathed most vloggers for a while, their saccharine levels of glee seem extremely forced, and I find most of the content so vapid and meaningless. There is a video of them just messing around with a swimming pool, it has one million views, I mean I’m not gonna knock the views, but imagine spending your day sitting down watching someone set up a swimming pool. For me, it just seems like content for other people to live through, and although it can be cathartic in the short term for an audience, I’d always just encourage going out and grinding to afford a swimming pool yourself, this content always seems to leave a void for me, maybe that’s just who I am, but who I am affects how I feel.
However, that’s not the topic of the video today, I just wanted to get that off my chest, but now my chest, my abdomen, my rib cage, my trachea, my lungs, my bronchi, are completely clear, and we are ready to rock and roll.
You see, Zoella and Alfie Deyes are part of the British vloggers, crew, and here in the UK, we have a very nice little niche for them, not just in the vlogging community, but in the commentary community. It’s no secret that the British vlogging scene has kinda gone, many of the people like ThatcherJoe, Marcus Butler, Oli White, even the ones we’re talking about today, are “stagnating”, I was gonna throw Caspar Lee into that mix too, but since he made a video on the KSI drama, it seems he might just resurrect himself, but I guess we’ll see what happens on that matter. And ready to dance on the graves of these people are the commentators, which is something I’d normally welcome with open arms, I mean, who doesn’t love the chaos of calling people out for doing terrible things.
And in this instance the main targets were the titular characters of this little tale, good old Zoe, and Alfie here. Firstly, Zoe for her ill advised Christmas calendar that came in at a tasty 50 quid, and secondly Alfie, for another little stunt in which he quote “survived” on one quid a day, spoiler alert, he didn’t exactly play by the rules.
In these little escapades, it’s quite easy to see why people dished out the criticism fairly heavily, there were plenty of embarrassing moments to pick apart, especially when you’re going in with the level of precision that many commentators do. As I’ve said in previous videos, people in different communities have never been held to the same standards that we in commentary expect, so when commentators felt ravenous, the vlogging community was a buffet.
However, is it possible, that in spite of all the legitimate criticisms that could be levelled against these individuals, that mistakes were made. Admittedly, when the first lot of drama transpired against Zoella, I was completely on board for the ride, obviously I wasn’t making videos about it at the time, because it wasn’t really my thing, however, I lapped it all up because it was entertaining, and there was a feeling of righteousness. However, as the months went by I began to question whether it was all worth the passionate vitriol invested into the numerous videos, and by the time the second set of drama came around, I was convinced that this was a very neatly orchestrated ruse, how did it happen though?

I really like the overall message and production of this video. However, as someone familiar with beauty brands I find something missing with your critique of the calendar. There seem to be two types available 1) expensive calendars of candles, perfumes, makeup etc and 2) cheap toy or chocolate calendars. The expensive, and usually also the cheap, advertise what they include on their websites if not the box because the companies acknowledge the high price. This high price is justified because the products are often better value that buying them individually. Now Zoella’s team made two mistakes, the first is not disclosing what you are selling. The second is about the branding point you make, which is true but not in this instance. A White Company candle is impossible to duplicate for cheaper (most expensive companies do not private label as your video insinuates). And then if you choose to buy it individually, you usually pay more per gram. However it is possible to duplicate the majority of Zoella’s advent gifts exactly, in quality, design etc. Therefore there is no value for money, no transparency of advertising, no compatible quality, and yes no brand value from her product. Additionally, she advertises a cheap calendar as an expensive one (as per the two definitions above) and what’s more, she does so to children who will use their parents’ money to buy it. This point seemed brushed over, but I really like your style and have subscribed :)

I feel like the reason people were criticising zoella's calendar wasn't because of just the price, but you didn't know what was inside it before you bought it. the calendar was expensive so I imagine people expected expensive items to be in it. it's like a £50 lootbox that contains notepads and confetti

When you're talking about Alfie's "Living off £1" video (about 18:00 mins in) I think you might be lacking some context - the Live off £1 For A Day idea was a challenge, specifically to highlight the difficulty of living in poverty. Several KZreadrs had done it before and every one of them (that I'd seen anyway) had a message about poverty in their video because that was the point of the challenge. He either knew this and didn't think it was important enough to put in his own video, instead showing off all the perks of being a rich successful youtuber, or he missed the whole point of the challenge (which wouldn't surprise me based on the level of intellect he portrays in his videos)

DaisyBryar This is exactly it. I believe this was started by a charity that deals with poverty stricken families to show the realities of poverty. Alfie missed the point once again, and shows this level of out of touch first world Mentality. People are angry that he turned a very serious topic into a light hearted, first world problem vent, and he doesn’t even complete the challenge, and when he changed the title to ‘spending one pound’ it’s still false because he bought a damn Gucci bag.

I address the idea that he was "venting" separately, which is an idea that I thoroughly disagree with. And think was twisted perception of him simply reacting to the changes that he had to make in his life. With regards, to the one dollar/pound a day videos, they've been going for a while, and I don't believe there is a set rule with how you should do them. Plenty of people have made videos pretty central to their lives, whether they've created a narrative around poverty or not, Alfie's video was just done badly, and I completely concede that. ChadWithAJ's video is monetised with five mid rolls, and a like goal. People would've roasted Alfie alive for that. In fact I find the narrative inserted that there are people suffering more manipulative in those instances. "People are suffering, btw let's hit 15k likes". It's a purposeful attempt to elicit sympathy while still trying to pull numbers. Another one of my favourites was Denzel Dion's, who literally said "I'm gonna switch it to 5 dollars a day so we can be realistic here" before talking about how half the world's population lives under 2 dollars. These things make the poverty points seem like hooks rather than actual compelling moments. So forgive me if I don't find Alfie Deyes an exception to the rule, considering that these videos came out before his. Another example are videos like LivingBobby's, whhich are incredibly well made and useful, but there wasn't allusion to poverty, in fact, it was clear it was a video centralised on helping people save money. Of course this applies to people in poverty too, just not exclusive. Does it make everything that Alfie Deyes did right? Of course not, but to assume there was some set in stone formula because of who did it first seems disagreeable to me because many people had already branched out the concept.

Well that implies that he actually knew about the "challenge" previously. He could of just thought it was a cool concept of a video and did it. Not doing any research prior to his video. Then again I haven't seen the original video, so I can't say for certainty.

It's a symptom of a problem Alfie has always had, he says and does dumb shit and thinks he can get away with it because he is young. I'm sorry that shit worked when he was 21 but not now. He never tries to educate himself or do better despite saying he will. Imo this is the straw that broke the camels back.

I don’t agree with the calendar section. I think she used cheap products and that was the issue. Quality over quantity is what I always value in products. Sure nice branding is a bonus.. but a fancy notepad is still a cheap ass notepad. People want to feel like the value of the products in the calendar far out weigh the price point of it. And that’s the appeal of those calendars.

Lots of items are sold far above the price it took to make it, but the branding is what make people buy it , such as apple products. What you said is simply subjective. With items such as calendars, branding and aesthetic is key.

And to be fair you can have higher quality notebooks - thicker paper, nicer cover. Putting the logo on it would have been less about price than effort. That crappy notebook just seemed so sloppy and careless. The tween fans the calendar was aimed at are the easiest market to please - and they didn’t bother to do that. Zoe’s reaction to the controversy was also really shitty. She shifted blame very childishly without being able to see that with all the financial advantages of having her name on a product the buck should ultimately stops with her when something goes wrong too...

Honestly I fully agree that selling such crap for a price as large as they were was a bad idea especially with the mystery implying there is something in there worth its price and if people can get angry at a lot box that gives you nothing of value you can do the same for the calendar. My main problem is when grown adults over 18 came out in droves being offended at theee being so much money, when they should have been angry about how she advertised and attempted to in a way trick her younger Audience out of money. She had a right to sell at any price and if some sad sap decides to buy a 50 pound calendar thats on him but when a child Is influenced into that kind of transaction it's just plain scummy. I didn't hate the product or its price I hated its advertising.

  • @TheHestya
    @TheHestya6 жыл бұрын

Some of the reasons for the hate for Zoella: she made a £50 advent calendar filled with junk. She then LIED about her not having a say in the price tag. That is simply NOT how these deals work, it was confirmed by Boots, who sold it, who she tried to put the blame of the price on. She disregarded all the criticism and said ''I didn't do it''. And she did. Some of the hate for Alfie: with the £1 stuff, he completely ignored the point of the challenge, decided to buy games, earrings, a beard comb for some mysterious reason, etc, in the video where he was ''living off £1'', called it ''pocket money'' while there are plenty of people to whom that's all the money they have for food. The point is the huge level of disassociation. Yes, spending less than £1 on food does not mean not spending money on other things, but WHY did he think that putting those clips of him buying that stuff in THAT particular video would be a good idea? They both were not born to rich families. But they are so disassociated with the general population because they CAN buy whatever they want and these prices mean nothing to them. But they are trying to be relatable to teenagers? How?

I agree, I used to enjoy these videos and felt that fair enough, they have worked hard for their money they deserve it, but lost all respect because of the absolute ignorance of the 'living on £1' video. Many people use this challenge as a charity fundraiser, along with the £5 for a week challenge, and raise awareness of the lives of people living in poverty, the international poverty line is $1.90 a day, which over 700million people live on. He could have raised awareness and done some good from his platform and although he has apologised, I just can't be doing with him now, not to mention the amount of plastic bottles he uses every day, for god sake buy a water filter.

Well, there is no direct proof that was his intention. When you're in a higher class standing you actually tend to do stuff like eat out often, so as TRO pointed out it seems he was just trying to make it without spending more than that on food or drink in the day, and that is completely fine. If you CHOSE to assign it meaning or context not given, stated, or otherwise implied except by a title that was changed, then that really belongs in your own assumptions, he is not responsible for your assumptions he is only responsible for his actions, that's it. The video was armless....Erm I mean harmless, yes the H one. All joking aside, I came from pretty extreme poverty, living under bridges and in parks at points, it is STUPID to be offended by such trivial nonsense when there are people targetting children here on youtube. If you want to say the video was retarded, that's fine. But to try to force a narrative on assumptions of what the challenge would be is not fair at all. For example, if I was challenging myself to level a character in a game X way, just because there's a challenge close to it, doesn't mean I am doing THAT challenge unless I say otherwise. In this case, I think it was more of it just happened to be similar to the challenge you're talking about, rather than intentionally the challenge. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Not spending =/= poverty. Not spending = not spending = any number of reasons from saving up, to challenging oneself in hopes to reflect on a lifestyle, to just not wanting to spend 10 bucks on a drink that's worth 3. (This s a copied reply because it fits two people's post, and I don't want to rewrite the entire damn thing. This is about your second pots.) As for the calendar again branding. When you go to the store go to the cereal selection, pick up a named box of your favorites, or really, compare the price to a generic store-brand version. You WILL notice a price difference, and not inherently see an improvement of quality. Because the brand itself increases the value to us. The complaint about it being junk is a personal opinion from you, and that's fine. I'm not out here to defend people I never knew existed until this video, but I am out to defend fairness, If we hold them to this standard, no youtuber can charge over the very cheap price they're paying factories to make their shit. That 20 buck shirt, is probably worth less than 5. We must apply the same rules to everyone. IF we are going to punish her for the calendar being priced for her name, then every other thing in our society like this must ALSO be punished. No more iphones, named brand clothes, food, shoes, etc. Lastly, they weren't disassociated from anything, because a lot of what you said implies an intent that was not there, nor has it been proven. You are pointing at capitalism and some of the stuff that happens and blaming the people playing the game, rather than the game itself. And for the challenge video, as I said in length nowhere did he say " I am pretending to be homeless" the challenge was about spending on food, a specific thing. You have not established he was doing some premade challenge, you have not established that him spending low money on food is a direct jab at anyone that isn't "rich'. All that has been established was his goal was to spend little money on food. People seem to be applying their own assumptions based on opinion, rather then what was actually done and said, as a result, two youtuber's are being defamed for minor things. Did you know there are active predators ON youtube doing stuff like trying to have people murdered for breaking up with them? So why people chose to be upset that someone jacked up the price of merch with their name, and someone doing a challenge to spend 1 buck on food, instead of people praying on children is beyond me. People want to hate these people and will find a way, even if it isn't fair, logical or reasonable to blame them for society and things they never said nor did.

I do agree on most about the Zoella situation, but I have a grievance with the "branding" argument. When you buy a christmas callendar from a brand, you know what to expect, and you are expecting it to be of that kind of brand. Markipliers calendar was jokingly shown, but that has the branding of "it's picture with markiplier", just like chocolate calendars from companies, you know what chocolate you are getting and expect it to be of the same quality, just in bite size. What Zoella mainly lacked imo, was something screaming "Zoella", which makes it hard for me to justify the huge prize as "branding". While yes the designs where her's, they didn't scream "my brand" and just "here's a random design I made". If I where to make branding of my own content (let's take inspiration from my avatar) I would have added a viking helmet of some kind on my design. While it could be really easy to make just a small cartoon viking helmet, if I do that on all the merchandise, then it tells you it's "my" brand. Zoella didn't have that. But going back on it, I agree, her biggest mistake was... well, misjudging and making a mistake

  • @ntaglemusic

I agree with this statement. In addition, I think what TRO should have touched on was that the reason why branding works for those larger companies IS the quality of their products. Advent calendars made by companies ranging from beauty like Too Faced (a brand Zoe used to always get Advent calendars from) to food like Cadbury (another company Zoe used to get Advent calendars from), the products included were of high quality, and it's because of that quality that the branding works. The issue with Zoella is that it's not like she has any products that are particularly associated with high quality in terms of her brand. She's always relied on her personality and her online presence as a way to pass low quality products, like a lot of other creators to be honest.

  • @Metaporphsycosis

Okay, I’m yet to finish the video as of writing this but I can’t help but disagree over your stance on the Zoella calendar. You quite rightly say that it’s a product of consumerism, and that (typically) a brand would add value to a product. Well there were three items entirely unrecognisable as Zoella merchandise (the two cookie cutters and the keyring) and then also the confetti (which apart from the Zoella box) hadn’t been branded. If a third of the items aren’t branded surely that does make the price unjustified? You also refer to Zoella’s ‘record in merchandise’. I’ll be the first to admit I’m not up to date with her more recent products, but certainly when she first brought out her beauty line in boots, it was problematic. The items (though not necessarily poor quality) were high in price and didn’t match how they were advertised (eg said to be pomegranate scented, yet having no discernible smell). Then of course there’s the case of her first book, which she falsely advertised as being written by her (it was in fact ghost written), although I more see that as lying by omission. ‘Zoella has emerged the horned wench to steal your children’s piggy bank money’, yes, yes she has. You have to keep in mind Zoella’s audiences, working/ middle class young girls (ie not rolling in dough). You mention this isn’t an exception calendars ‘upwards of £250’, well I went on an internet excursion and you’re not wrong (m.mankind.co.uk/beauty-box/the-mankind-advent-calendar-worth-over-650/11477410.html , www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/christmas/gmp32295/luxury-advent-calendars/ - not that I thought you were). The difference - children/ teen luxury advent calderas don’t tend to break the £20 threshold in my quick research (although I’ll admit I didn’t really find many that were comparable, apart from the Tanya Burr calendar priced at £20). So she is going over the average price of product like hers (which would be okay if it were any good). And relying on the trust her audience has for her to sell them. Then a little point at the end, typically the point of these calendars is that you get more than you pay for. Especially in the higher priced range; the value of the branded products total above the price of the calendar. That’s kinda the point. But this of course was sourly not the case with our friend Zoe Sugg. I hope this was at least some what coherent I’ve just been written it off the top of my head. I’m not saying Zoella is the devil incarnate but I also don’t think that even by the standards set by other brands that her pricing scheme is justified. Perhaps my views will have changed by the end of the video, who knows.

I get what you're saying, but I feel I address that point. The designs were meant to add the value, however, she chose the wrong items to add the designs to, items that were focused on their utility. A lot of Zoella items in the Christmas calendar were not sold separately, so we can never truly judge whether they were cheaper all round. Comparing them to unbranded items is fallacious. I don't rate Zoella as a wholly "children's" KZreadr, and I think that her content is catered to individuals of all ages within the beauty industry. I understand that she may have a younger demographic than many others within the beauty industry, she was marketing to beauty stores, the problem was her items were fairly generic and uninspired. However, at the end of the day, demographic regardless, people still have to take responsibility for the purchases they're making, plenty of kids cop expensive extortionate merch. I don't think that's exactly on Zoella.

The Right Opinion I think I must have either missed or misunderstood your point about her choosing to add branding to the wrong items. Perhaps because she’s a figure I’ve grown up with (she’s been making videos throughout the entirety of the time I’ve been on you tube, so since I was about 9 or 10 probably) I subconsciously hold her to a higher standard? Either way, thank you for replying. I really enjoy your videos!

I feel a lot of the outrage came from the fact that it was a calendar- you essentially don't know what is inside until you open it. As a beauty vlogger many would reasonably assume the items would be beauty-related. Value aside, out of the 12 items, I believe only 8 were branded products and even then, none were linked to beauty or makeup. When people are given only a £50 price-tag and a fancy exterior box to go off of, it's understandable that they would believe the items inside to have a greater value and a stronger appeal than what they actually received. Her calendar is essentially completely different from other kinds of merchandise. With a brand shirt- you know you're getting a brand shirt. Also, in a lot of the media coverage and social media responses/ reviews: they primarily mentioned parents who had bought the calendar for their children. While this may not accurately represent everyone who purchased a calendar, a fair percentage of buyers likely were parents or relatives buying the calendar for children. I agree people should be responsible for their purchases, but this seems like a unique case where people weren't entirely sure what they were purchasing.

I feel like your opinion isnt an unpopular one on this topic. I feel like its a vocal minority that is lashing out at the vloggers because their stance is very emotionally driven, so it makes sense that theyre going to be the most outspoken take on this situation. Well said on the "singling out" of Zoelle. It may just be correlation rather than causation speaking her but I feel like female vloggers are more heavily "punished" by commentators than their male counterparts. Or it may just be that people coincidentally have had such visceral (and often uninformed) opinions on past situations about women in vlogging. You hit the nail on the head with "living" on one pound being the key word. I feel most people would have momentarily disliked the video and then forget about their annoyances if it werent for other youtubers "hyping up" the drama. The whole situation seems to be drawn out by viewers imho. Again, lovely video (as always) and i'll be wishing you well with all the drama and sickness youve put up with

Well, they went after Alfre too, and in both cases, it was purposely deceptive. Which as I keep saying may actually be illegal see, there are these laws called "slander and Liable" laws. Essentially when you spread lies, unproven accusations etc about someone with the intent to harm their image, brand, or anything like that, it is actually a crime. A lot of people throw this out as a way to silence criticism, but in this case, for Jack, it seems clear he PURPOSELY twisted clips in order to paint a DECEPTIVE picture of both parties, and he did it to attack them. As for it to be criticism he has to have legitimate criticism, making up a lie and blaming someone for that lie, is not criticism. So this could be slander, I have no clue of the UK has laws like this or how they apply, but Jack could end up in trouble if this is his common practice. I should also note scamming people is illegal, so he was actually accusing her of a crime, which is very CLEAR slander if I ever heard it. This could be really bad.

I don’t disagree with you in some points. But... You said that the advent calendar was for richer middle class kids. Zoella has milions of viewers, MANY of them are not necessarily from rich(er) families and they probably begged their parents to get thecalendar for them as well. Not just rich kids wanted it and the poorer parents had surely hard time explaining the situation to their kids. Having seen what was in the calendar, it could have cost a half and Zoella (and her team) would still make a fortune and make it available for more kids. She also lied about the price creation and her involvement in it, which doesn’t make her look any better. I agree that Alfie didn’t want to mock poor people, but he is in the industry for long enough to know, that there should have been at least a remark about this (“I know there are people who struggle...”) - the problem was, that he is just so disconnected from the reality, that this didn’t even cross his mind, he just can’t even imagine this kind of poverty... (I am not a native English speaker, so I hope it’s understandable what I wrote:)).

Okay, so I think you've got a really interesting take on the whole merchandising thing here, but what I find most interesting is the lambasting people do about how she lied about whether or not she had control over the price of the calendar. Honestly, what I think happened is that Boots (who had the exclusive to the calendar) asked Zoella Beauty to create a £50 calendar, and she did, though again, the difference between the brand accepted markup and what people wanted from that expensive a calendar is huge. Then when Zoella says "I had no control over the price of things" it's true, she didn't have control over the price bc she was specifically asked to create a calendar for that price, and when Boots says "we sell at the recommended selling price" it's again true, but each company is able to blame the other without taking responsibility and it's both partially true. Honestly, when she first did the "apology" and the boots tweet came out, it was the first thought I had, but no one else has brought it up even to disprove it. Alfie I've always found quite tone deaf so I was never an avid watcher.

Was it just because it's more syllables? are we not supposed to call them advent calendars anymore? If this question sounds confrontational I don't mean it that way, i'm genuinely just really curious, ta.

I think with Alfie Deyes' video, what I really had issues with was the incredible lack of self-awareness. That being said, I don't think there was any malintent there and think it didn't even occur to him how it could be taken. It felt just like a dumb mistake. With Zoella, the calendar was incredibly low-quality that gave no indication as to what was in it. Also, in the U.S. (based on the federal minimum wage - it varies by state), 50 pounds would actually equate to just a little less than a day's wages (exchange rates being taken into account). Just putting that out there.

Surprised there's not an extra 0 in that sub count but I'm hoping you'll eventually hit half a million in the future and continue growing.

I remember when I went into boots during the black Friday period and all the Christmas stuff had sold out except the zoella calendar and some fabletics stuff. How much was this calendar during Black Friday you may ask? £4 it was £4. And there was so many of them left. I even considered buying it but even I couldn’t bring myself to spend £4 on it.

Though I don't fully agree with your whole perspective on zoella and Alfie as youtubers, I really appreciate your more unbiased opinion on the severe amount of hate and cancel culture being thrown their way (along with many other KZreadrs atm). I completely understood the outrage about some of the things they've done in the past and I also understand why their content isn't entertaining or valuable for many people, but like you said that calendar was the first and so far only product that received such negative reviews and to say that it was this huge manipulative scheme to take advantage of fans over low-quality products is just illogical and has almost no basis compared to her history of product lines. The Hello World scandal was unfortunate, but there were so many people who actually enjoyed themselves and met their favorite creators so it really was just a mishap in time vs attendance. Alfie's $1 video was blown way out of proportion by the people who get offended for others who don't even care. All he did was whine about having to drink tap water (which I hear plenty of people do on a regular basis because they prefer bottled or filtered water - an extremely common opinion and yet one of the most talked about aspects of the video) and learn how hard it is to genuinely live off so little money. He was a lil ignorant, but clearly had no bad intentions and the backlash he received probably taught him a lesson, which is all anyone can hope for when it comes to educating someone who doesn't know enough about a sensitive topic. I could go on, but my point after all that is just that people too often *mistake ignorance/normal human error for malice/manipulation* and it doesn't take that many brain cells to think past your initial reaction or someone else's aggressive opinion. I think you did a great job at explaining that and I'm really happy that more creators like you and Evan Edinger are encouraging viewers to form their own educated opinions rather than hop on the JaackMaate/iNabber/etc. train without listening to opposing perspectives.

I think you're totally right on the money, the outrage was exaggerated and was probably based on a misunderstanding. The only thing that stops me from believing these people, is the rampant dishonesty on KZread. There are not a lot of people with big audiences that I trust, and probably never will, because time and time again they mess with their audiences, so it's not hard for me to believe that Zoella and Alfie had malicious intent. That's why I'm glad this video is here, because at the end of the day, judging a person without properly (proper, as in not just blindly hating on them, nor blindly support them) analysing them will just make everything worse.

Turning against rich white boys and girls who aren't really bright is a trend, sadly. Sure they may be far from reality that normal people live in, but it shouldn't be a reason for one human being to humiliate another one. After all they meant no harm. Besides, there are not so much people in this world who do their actions out of evil intentions and only this kind of people deserves contempt in my opinion. We have to stay human even if we're not fond of particular person's behavior or lifestyle. That's why I admire your unpopular point of view on this subject.

The one quid a day challenge is aimed at making you aware of how much money you use, of shifting your lifestyle or one element of it, for one day in order to force you to think. I don't like that British blogger but it clearly worked on him. He actually had to think about things in ways that were very new to him and he shared that with his audience. 'Oh, I can't have my protein shake' made me smile. 'Oh wow, I have to drink tap water' made me laugh. The pure shock on his face at those moments is precious to me, it's really shaking his view for a big to realise how good he usually has it, how many resources all around him suddenly seem more valuable when he loses access to them. I think TRO has a point, the clickbait title was mistake. 'One Quid Day - What Can I Eat?' Or something like that would have been better, with a clear lay out of the goals at the start and a round up at the end concluding that he's more aware of how good he has it and it might impact him going forward.

So, I haven't finished the video yet, but a few things to note about Zoella thus far. 1. In regards to the advent calendar, it's majorly been about the price. This is often conflated with value, as evidenced by the numerous videos on the matter. As mentioned, it's been covered to death. However, she mentioned in her explanation video that she had no control over the pricing and that it was solely up to the retailer (just to summarize). Whilst that is true to a certain extent, Boots had replied on Twitter to someone to effectively say that they had not set the price. It's entirely possible that someone in the merchandising chain suggested the price, but it's equally likely that she suggested the price. Was the price malicious on her part? No necessarily. But the damage control she tried spouting comes off as very disingenuous in part because it's partially (if not fully) incorrect, which implies a good few things. 2. About Hello, World, the main underlying issue is that she, along with other British KZreadrs, hold/held stake in the company that ran the event. This information was leaked not too long after the event was held. I can't quite remember the details of the event, but there is some financial incentive for them for the event to make money.

Imo the difference between a shirt for example and a calender whilst yeah your paying for the brand at least you know what your getting when you buy the shirt theres no bullshit behind it, I don't understand it like I mean I buy shirts for 3 quid and they last me a good 5 years before I have to buy a new "wardrobe". However with a calender for 50 quid you don't have a clue to what your getting its a toss up untill you open the thing and see so your expectations in that instance are more grand than the reality if that makes sense? Thats why reviews are important sure. But if someones selling a calender for 50 quid then you expect some goodshit not a list of things you could probably find in your house already and thats the reason why it would leave a very sour taste in your mouth and thats understandable really, because it comes across very scammish when you compare it to the shirt which you know what your getting when you buy it even though they carry the same principle. I honestly believe if it wasn't in the form of a calender and you could see, or you knew what you would recieve before hand like you would with the shirt argument, it wouldn't of blown up as badly as it did. Its because of the fact it came in a calender, you couldn't of known what was in it untill you opened it that it turned into the delightful shitshow that it became.

I think it could have been executed better if the 12 products were actually relevant to Zoella's brand. For example-twelve shades of lipstick would have been nice to see. Based on my limited knowledge on makeup, lipstick is generally more inclusive than something like eyeshadow (where shades might not show up on darker skintones) and lipstick has more value than a notepad, even if the notepad has more utility.

I feel that the outrage around Zoella was also partially caused by her having been in scandals before surrounding her merch. Her books were ghostwritten while she said writing had always been a hobby of hers and releasing a book had always been a dream. She basically lied to give the book a better branding. Then when her advent calendar was disappointing she lied again in her explanation video saying she didn't set the price when she very much did. If it was really just a mistake she could've simply owned up to it, but instead she tried to lie her way out of it.
