Herbie Hancock: Live from The BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival

Музыка

Hear the radio episode here: n.pr/2enut7J
Herbie Hancock always seems to be on some kind of voyage. Whether he's improvising in a spaceship surrounded by 11 keyboards or forming new iterations of bands, you can always count on him to push the possibilities and the boundaries of jazz.
This concert presentation includes the most recent member of the group: Terrace Martin, who's collaborated with Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar. It also features Lionel Loueke on guitar and vocals, James Genus on bass, and Trevor Lawrence Jr. on drums.
On this radio episode, Jazz Night in America host Christian McBride sits down with Hancock to discuss his technological journey over the years. We'll also hear stories from Herbie's longtime keyboard tech, Bryan Bell, and a testimonial from Paris Strother, keyboard player for the R&B trio KING.

Herbie said he was a huge fan of sly stone...and if you listen to herbie funk records, especially the period beginning in 1974, you can hear what sly was experimenting rythmically in his 1973 "Fresh" album, the bass and drum playing is totally new for that period (andy newmark on drums and rusty allen on bass)

It was nice to hear "Come Running To Me" live. However, this drummer is a real clunky choice for this band. I've seen a show live where he completely butchered "Actual Proof", for example. His style is much too dominant and "straight forward" for this context - which makes sense given that he is actually a hip hop / r&b drummer, not a jazz drummer. Mike Clark wasn't a jazz drummer either, but he was a funk drummer who basically revolutionized the way jazz and jazz-funk is played. I'm sure there would be plenty of other - better - drummers who could nail that style. And even better yet, since both Clark and Harvey Mason are still alive and well...why not get the real thing?

for watermelon man, between 5.28 and 5.38, the drummer seems to have botched t he proper sequence. He is absolutely not in step with the bass, and that makes that section very clunky and dissonant.

No, they actually metrically modulate there. A dotted quarter in the previous straight 8th groove becomes the quarter note in a new swung groove. They all do it together.
