It's amazing how A&M Records co-founder Herb Alpert collaborates with fellow client Janet Jackson. The label, that was launched in 1962 with Jerry Moss had a great roster with other artists like Alpert's Tijuana Brass, the Carpenters, the Captain & Tennille,Peter Frampton,Styx,Rita Coolidge,Supertramp,Sting and his band The Police,Bryan Adams and more.

Herb Alpert was the president of A&M record company at the time (her record company in 1987, the time when this was released.) Before this he was a big time musician with his band the "Tijuana Brass" and I know this was before I was born. (I'm 48). He was friends with Jam, Lewis as well as Janet and she sang on this song as well as "Making Love in the Rain" for his album "Keep Your Eye On Me".

I don't remember that being a huge hit but it was #1 on the R&B charts. 85 was probably the peak of 80's pop so there were so many hits that year - Wham, Madonna, Chaka Kan, Hall&Oates, Tears for Fears - the list goes on and on.

Actually, from what I know, it was first reported that she had the flu. Then years later said not true. She was pregnant (she was married to Rene Elizando and no one knew she was at the time) had a miscarriage. The little girl who did her Janet routine was on yhe completion show "Puttin on the Hits". Where people performed like their musical idols and lip synched the songs like Lip Sync Battles show. I remember she had Janet moves down perfectly. Always wondered what happened to her..she has to be in her mid 40's now.

I hadn’t heard of Herb Albert then, and certainly haven’t heard anything from him since. This song is so Janet through & through, complete with producers Jam & Lewis, Jerome, and Paula Abdul’s choreography. Everything about it is her Control album. I doubt it would have been a hit without her. It’s kind of like the Rockwell song Somebody’s Watching Me where Michael sang the chorus. Michael is what made that song a hit. Everything Michael or Janet touched at that time exploded. It was smart marketing that put Janet on this song

@@gpmcd1044 The song is good regardless. I'm saying that and I'm a huge Janet Jackson fan. Herb Albert is clearly a great musician. He had already been in the music business for years even by the time this song came out (based on what others have mentioned). I love musicianship so I would have enjoyed the song even without Janet...and that's saying a lot. Herb Albert also did "Someday Is Tonight" on Janet's Rhythm Nation album...and that song would not have been what it was without him. Great talent all around.

It’s because this was Herb Alpert’s song and marketed with his name first and Janet just featured on the song. It wasn’t a duet.
