One correction, Prince didnt usher in the Minneapolis sound. That implies it existed before him, and he showed a spotlight on it. That inference is incorrect. Prince CREATED the Minneapolis Sound!

Ths is the music we had growing up in the 80s thanks a lot to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. They were making hit after hit for artists. Herb Alpert was fortuante enough to benefit from their talents. Lisa Keith and Janet Jackson killed the vocals on this song. A masterpiece.

Herb is mainly a jazz musician. Some musicians feature other singers to sing on their songs. On this same album, Herb features Janet Jackson on lead vocals of "Diamonds:' Santana has used many singers on their songs. "just the two of us" by Grover Washington Jr features Bill Withers on lead vocals. Even Pink Floyd has hired other singers to sing lead like Clare Torry "The great gig in the sky" and Roy Harper "Have a cigar". The Alan Parsons Project has used many featured lead singers"

I see that so many of the young ppl who react to the oldies say the same thing - they are jealous of what we had. Just continue to enjoy and exploring “real talent “!

I was 17 when this song came out and every time it came on the radio my heart melted. Yes pop and r&b created some of the best music during this era straight through to the '90s. They learned from the best.

Producing this track (and others on the album) was part of the price Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis had to pay to work with Janet Jackson. Herb Alpert was the trumpet player (and owner of the record company. Janet was on at the time). The singers are Lisa Keith (verses) and Janet Jackson (chorus).
