The whole album is an explanation to her son of why she “blew up his whole world” for her own happiness. People are saying that maybe this shouldn’t have been the first single but it’s perfect when you consider that the album is for him not us. She’s explaining why and pleading for him to go easy on her. Absofuckinglutely perfect song from a parent to a child after a divorce. Love you Adele!

Usually people will split custody about 50/50 or like weeks with Mom & weekends with Dad or whatever but, since Adele's an international superstar, I'm guessing they have a unique agreement. I read that she and her ex are neighbors in LA

She's asking her son to go easy on her for going through with this divorce. She's saying she did what was best, she put them first, and she tried, but she just couldn't do it anymore. It's a love letter to her son.

"He hits the floor" is what we are all feeling listening to this. ❤️❤️❤️

The music pages flying out the window of the car is a metaphor of what she lost/gave up when she got married and had a child. Explained later in the lyrics that she changed herself to put them both first. She sacrificed her career and love of singing for family.

The song is for her son, following her divorce from his father 😢 The opening lyrics "There's no gold in this river" - is referring to a gold wedding ring. "Drowning in silence" - is either referring to her ex-husband not talking OR her son blocking her out and going quiet. The 1st "non choice" that she HAD to choose was stopping singing whilst her son was an infant (hence the 6 year absence) - the visuals were the sheets of sheet music blowing out and away. The 2nd "non choice" that she HAD to choose was the divorce - the visuals showed her sitting (whilst obviously singing) in a chair, the camera lingers on her hand - minus her wedding ring. From start to finish, the director, very succinctly, embroidered poignant visuals throughout the vid. Nothing in the vid was wasted or frivolous - everything was purposeful and intentional. Most important though, was that the vid could NEVER be "bigger" than the song (similarly, the music was stripped back). The song had to tell the story - the song HAD to impact the listeners emotions. So fantastically clever 👏👏👏👏👏 She can write and sing so incredibly beautifully. What a star 🌟 Love from the UK 🇬🇧

I think Adele was saying that she took on stardom for him to better their situation and to make him secure and happy but he wouldn’t allow himself to adapt with the changes that came with the stardom.
