Her mannerisms are a trauma response. It's how your brain & body protects you when you're discussing or re-living a traumatic event (I make similar facial expressions or get anxious laughter when discussing traumatic events from my life). My heart goes out to her. I'm glad she's keeping his memory alive and sharing her story to warn others about red flags to look out for.

@timefoolery it's not that unusual it's fairly common. If you go back and look at footage of soldiers during WWII they will be smiling or laughing but their eyes show exactly how traumatized they are. It can be unnerving to see if you're not familiar with how trauma can psychologically impact someone but it is truly just how your body/brain tries to protect you. For me I had a 6'4" stranger try to abduct me with a 🔫 from a house party when I was a teenager. I'm barely 5'1" and tipsy me thought the 🔫 was fake so I grabbed it from him and blew a hole through the ceiling. I laughed for years telling this story not because it's funny but because the memory of that and the knowledge of what could have happened is so scary my brain won't let me go there so I laugh to alleviate the anxiety and trauma.

@@timefooleryThat's because you associate smiling with being happy but not everyone's facial expressions are the same. For me, ppl often tell me to "smile" when I'm perfectly happy because being happy doesn't make me smile, and they say I'm laughing or smiling when I'm sad and grieving. I smile because that is my faces natural response to pain or sadness in the way that it is to joy for others. It's like this for many ppl. . it's not weird, it's just different from yours.

Yes, child protective services, the police and children's lawyers, psychologists, attorneys and JUDGES, even friends and family, think you are not serious or circumstances aren't that bad when you smile, but if you try to tell them just how dire your circumstances are or act depressed, upset, or afraid in any way, they act like you are the problem and they get angry at you for being in the situation when you ask for help to get out, and they turn around and punish you and believe your charming abuser who acts baffled and like the victim and says you are crazy. They immediately label you with the problem and attorneys won't take your case or say they aren't therapists when you try to tell them how bad it is. They minimize everything and dismiss it.

Yes, and it didn't just happen yesterday. She needs to move on for her other children and herself. That does not mean she doesn't have private grief. I have tons for other types of losses. I would drag my children down and they would do the same to themselves if we wallowed in all our griefs and losses all of the time. We are forced to compartmentalize. She still loves her son and misses him terribly. She needs to put that aside much of the time or there would be no point in living, she would just be waiting and suffering. What about all the other people who lost someone, like in wars? Sometimes you laugh and inside so much pain cuts through. So much pain. Other times you are removed from it.

it's outrageous that justice cannot protect children in such situations. I live in Brazil, and I remember of 2 cases in which kids around 10 y.o. went to justice offices to ask for help, because they had been beaten and abused by their fathers. In both cases the law department failed miserably. In both the responsibles convinced the kids to go back home that "everything would be ok". Both kids were murdered.

You are very correct that the "systems" are horrible. I have three cousins (all siblings) that were molested by their biological father. He went to prison but was released. The three children were forced by the courts to have visitation with him (they were all still under the age 18 when he wad released). He was convicted for molesting his children but the children were forced to have visitation with him after he was released from prison. How stupid is our system? Obviously, very. All about the parents "rights". Just like your story. Your son should never been allowed to visit his biological father, who is a serial killer. And his son should not been allowed to live with him either. I am so sorry to hear your story. I can not imagine. I am glad you did tell your story. You made valid points for people to think about when they meet someone they may get into a relationship with. It's great to hear that you were able to move through life after such a tragedy. It’s wild that all these women in here are telling a survivor how she’s supposed to act. It shows for one, a lack of knowledge. Two, a lack of empathy and understanding for trauma victims. Three, the extreme entitlement of thinking that you have any right to tell a survivor what’s “ appropriate” behavior and what’s not. And four, it’s just pathetic behavior really. I’m tired of women and our seemingly inability to support other women in their success and in their traumas. And that’s what I think of that! 😂

Prayers are with you and your family. I can’t imagine your pain at all, but I’m sure it’s also really hard for your sister. I mean her rapist also murdered her nephew. I certainly pray she has gotten therapy is learning how to triumph over this as well, and also hope y’all are close and this didn’t ruin your bonds. Rip little fella: so very sorry for your loss, but am so very glad you have decided to advocate for children and domestic violence laws. His death was not in vain. ❤🕊️

I see how her smiling isn’t inherently wrong but I think it is odd to see someone say these things with a smile. Especially because she’s been doing many interviews in the last decade. But she’s also a victim and I think we should all take that into consideration when we question her “smiling”.

That is a trauma response it’s not laughing or smiling as you would know it, it’s incredibly painful to talk about things so horrific she will relive this each time she shares her story it’s a response mechanism that her mind and body will be doing to safeguard her as it’s horrific trauma. Please be kind to people especially when you have not gone through this kind of trauma 🙂
