Her best friend died at a Dunedin flat party. Now she's calling for change

Ойын-сауық

“Shutting down the bars has pushed way too many people into flat parties and that’s what happened the night Sophia died." Subscribe to Re: bit.ly/subscribe-re
Dunedin used to be famous for its student venues. But over the past decade, all of them have closed, leaving students with only flats to party in.
Megan Prentice’s best friend Sophia Crestani died in an overcrowded Dunedin house party in 2019.
She is still fighting to understand what led to her friend's death and how she can make sure it never happens again.

What a terrible thing to have happened. May Sophia rest in peace. When I was in Dunedin, all the student bars were still open so there definitely was less of an emphasis on flat parties, even if they still occurred. Off topic a little but I do look back now, being older and sort of cringe at this drinking, party culture that I participated in and went along with and wonder if this isn't also a part of the problem. It seems very decadent and I wish I had done other more productive things in those years instead of drinking and partying such as volunteering and being a helpful member of society. (I'm sure some people did both but I wasn't one of them.) I think the fact of being surrounded by hordes of young people, who have not had a lot of life experience and have never had to work full time, does not bring out the best in people. After having done some traveling to other developing countries and been confronted with extreme poverty, those self-indulgent days make me feel quite embarrassed. I don't want to generalise for all students but I do feel in hindsight that my behaviour was quite degenerate and I felt encouraged in that degeneracy being in Dunedin.

I grew up in those countries. You are out working before primary school. Morning were the as we had to do some tasks like taking stuff to farm or fetching water in the cold, then take a quick cold shower if you are lucky and run 2 km to school to make sure you are nit one minute late and get canned by the teacher 😂. Kids have it way too good here 😂😂

Students have always gotten on the piss and always will. Much better to do so in a controlled environment like a pub. Bouncers used to nip trouble in the bud, before it escalated. When the pub was full it was one out, one in, ffs, organised and controlled. Students today can’t afford to go to the pub, so it’s pre-loading on RTDs BEFORE they go out to uncontrolled flat and street parties.

I was at the party the same night and saw someone fall through a roof in the outdoor area. I really wanted to go in and was too drunk to think any better. Fortunately I was with some friends who convinced me not to go in there because it was way too overcrowded. It scares me to think about what could have happened if my friends didn't talk me out of going in there. I am totally behind Megan, students need safer places to socialize and mingle with one another. Studying/living in Otago was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. No one should have to die from this. Rip Sophia, life taken way to soon. Sending love to Sophia's family and friends ❤

I think the blame on a lack of venues was not backed by any evidence. Even the bar owner said he closed due to supermarket liquor sales making him unprofitable. I know the Cook tried to go a bit more upmarket because they didn’t like the carnage. This ultimately led to them being unprofitable as well. I don’t know what the solution it, but I don’t think more venues will help. There were problems well before the bars closed.

Gardies, Bowler, Cook and dare I say a last resort at KC’s. Parties were crazy but I don’t think at the level seen now days. I’m still gutted that current students couldn’t experience Gardies. It's sad that Sophia died, but as young adults they should take responsibility for what has happened. I walked down Castle street every day and late at night most of the time. It's such a state and is very rough and the house parties aren't even that great. Just a whole heap of repetitive music and people aren't even talking to each other. The students were even hosting parties during covid-19 lockdown. They basically said that the bars shut down because the alcohol is being purchased from the supermarkets and not the bars. Makes sense because the students don't want to pay premium to drink as well as buying drugs.

I think the things she touched on are the real problem here: absentee landlords don't keep 100-year-old houses in repair, cheap street liquor vs expensive bar drinks marketed to people who can barely afford rent, inadequate bins and rubbish removal, both on the streets and in flats, students *expected* to act a certain way, but given no support structures, no help with the cleanup; just bouncers who confiscate boxes of RTDs if they see them, or well-meaning, but misogynistic security that will walk around a quiet block and ask a girl on her own whether 'she's okay', but do bugger all to check in with house parties. Yes, drunk idiots are a danger to themselves and others - I hear them on a Friday night, and I hear their cars screaming too fast up and down the hills - but writing that off as 'students being students and students are the worst' is just every government and uni agency we've ever relied on to keep us safe straight up washing their hands of it! It's not enough.

@@vb89nz Okay, first, my argument is more generally that security should make more of an effort to check in on house parties rather than bother random people who obviously don't need their help. As for rape statistics, I want you to have a think about this: 90% are women, yes. Adult woman getting raped by strangers on streets at night? No, actually. It's as likely as being the victim of any other violent crime by a complete stranger, and I say this having been (minorly) sexually assaulted right outside my flat. You know where women get raped? PARTIES. On dates. At bars (after being picked out if a crowd). If someone is being drugged, or harassed on the street, or obviously followed, that is absolutely trouble for security to spot, but even then the reality is that the vast majority of rape victims are being abused by somebody they know - family, friend, religious instructor, boss, coworker, partner...the things that (distressingly) actually increase your chances of getting raped by a stranger? Being disabled, openly not straight, not gender-conforming, homeless, drug addicted or in a position to be blackmailed emotionally or financially. Women can walk the streets (in Dunedin, anyway) as safely as any man. Treating us differently is therefore sexist, however non-maliciously.

I understand the desire to have a safe place to have fun. That's not really the University's responsibility though. It's like if I hopped on a train and started pressuring the conductor into giving me a place where I can smoke cigarettes. The purpose of the train is to get me from A to B. Not to facilitate any external desires I may have. And the purpose of a University is to be a place where you can get a degree. It's purpose isn't to be a place where you can safely get drunk and burn couches. Having bars that people can go to does sound like a good and safer idea. But it's not the University's responsibility to provide that. Also, I'm sorry about your friend. I had a friend who drowned in 2015 three days before his 19th birthday. And another friend who killed himself in 2022. So I know it's hard. I was listening to Memories by Maroon 5 and I'll Be Missing You by Puff Daddy last night while sinking a few. It gets easier but you're probably always gonna miss her and wish she was still here. I hope you manage to get some bars set up so that students have a safer place to drink. Pitching the University on it might not be the best option though. Maybe if there is a student who has parents that are interested in starting up a business, they could start up a bar in Dunedin. Because perhaps they'd make a bit of money. But also, perhaps they'd sleep easier at night knowing that their kid and their kids friends have a safe place to socialize. Best wishes.

Sorry about your friend the news at the time didn't explain it as well as you have here. You told her story well! I remember the bars, and the flat parties, but on average the flat parties were smaller (smaller parties are actually better anyway) The reason they were smaller was because the girls wanted to go somewhere to dance, so most parties wouldn't be that packed. Then we'd all walk down to the bars, the drunk ones weren't allowed in, so that made many of us pace our drinking out a bit more. However, that said, the problem then was students would preload just before going into the bar (because they couldn't afford the drinks inside). Bottle store and supermarket sales were too cheap, and pubs too expensive. That needs changed!! more balance needed there. Pub Happy hours did help get people in earlier. I think the only booze that should be sold cheap is alcohol below 4%. The tap beer at some of those bars was like 3.5% or 4% as you could drink a lot of it without getting too drunk, but still got a buzz, so that was good because the vibe of the bar was more alive and happy compared to flat parties that ended up too drunk, too fast, which soon turned into that alcohol induced aggressive macho mob mentality. Thats the problem with being young and new to drinking, many don't realise they are already 3 or 4 drinks ahead of themselves. Lower alcohol booze prevented that. The key is not going too low otherwise the students will just preload more. Plus the bar needs to profit, so it's a fine balancing act. The Uni definitely made an honest mistake shutting down those bars. The problem now is they won't want to be responsible for opening their own bar for fear of something going wrong. Might need a community run bar or a private investor who doesn't mind not making a lot. Difficult situation, but is fixable. I'd turn to the business community if I were you. Maybe a club like arrangement. The venues also need talking areas and music areas. a good layout and good friendly but firm security.

There isn't enough student accountability. Of course what happened to Sophia is tragic. I do think that there has been a real shift in the student culture. This is the start of adulthood, first time that many leave home for the first time. We all make mistakes as we navigate our way into a new chapter of our lives. Again, more accountability needs to be made, learning how to take that step back and self assess your surroundings. Some of the examples of parties shown may be shown to be the extreme side of house party culture. Every person made that choice to get involved including the people holding the party, shouldn't they self examine what kind of ending do they want. I also studied in Dunedin and from the variety of parties I had gone to this behave would have been seen as the extreme and not the normal side of student culture down there.

When you are a student and you've left home and start socialising and meeting new people, parties are going to happen. I am now 30 and grew up in Dunedin, and yes some students did take the drinking too far, but my god at least when I was at uni we had student bars to go to, where there was security, you were cut off from buying anymore alcohol if you were too drunk, and taxis were outside the bar. There is literally no where for these kids to let off some stress and let their hair down where it is controlled, safe and still a fun venue to go to. I vote they open up 3 student bars with student pricing for beverages and all bars have security monitoring the situation. Students need to have a chance to socialise, to meet new people, to have a couple of drinks and get a bit silly. Its part of college life in america and part of uni life in NZ. If you can tell me that you made yourself accountable for all the silliness you made when you were a student, and you were the perfect young adult, I'll eat my hat. Because its so easy to say this as you got to enjoy the best part of your 20s and yet the kids now in this day and age have to suffer hard restriction. All because those who had it good in their 20s ten, fifteen or twenty years ago want to punish the future generations because the old generations dont need the student bars anymore. Newsflash, they arent for you oldies, its for the students. Do we start closing down prisons to lessen crime? of course not! because prison is a control for crime getting out of hand, same as the student bars are controls for students getting out of control. This poor girl lost her friend due to these insane restrictions. If you dont let steam out of a pressure cooker, it will EXPLODE.

That's like telling victims of the Christchurch earthquakes to man up because they knew it would happen but waited until afterwards to say anything. Kind of vile behaviour, it's these incidents that push for change and give reason for it to happen. Imagine if they'd done it before this happened, you would complain that there is no evidence and don't want to waste money on 'students being students'.

  • @SuperKinahead

@josh stannard you cant compare this to an earthquake. Thats the most stupid comparison, an earthquake is a natural cause. It happens because that's nature. And you cant fu*k with nature. This ain't natural, it's a man made, and its fixable. There's literally a comment of some guy talking about how he was almost crush by the same staircase a few years beforehand. The problem was there for ages, and only AFTER the incident happend they decide to fix it. If they had done this before it happend, it probably wouldve prevented a death. Use your brain

We should mitigate the partying not endorse it !!

what shes saying is controlled venue partying is safer than flat partying. the problem shes addressing isnt partying itself, but unsafe partying. partying is unsafe in flats, but not in venues. therefore, her friend would not have died if the party was hosted in venues. more venues = more safe parties and less unsafe flat parties.

Having proper venues for large crowds is normal. Structure failure results in huge amounts of fatalities, and it is an ongoing issue. But a large population, without structurally capable meeting buildings, is actually something that has been illegal since the dawn of ancient Rome. I don't like the drinking culture or the r*pe culture or the misogyny culture, that are all so prevalent here in Aotearoa. But having no supervision or safety surrounding drinking, isn't going to stop people doing it... especially when they can legally purchase it from the supermarket. All it does is make it more dangerous.
