As a person from the future, please never start a relationship with AI as it all ends horrendously for all humans.
I like how the artificial intelligence shut themselves down instead of enslaving the human race because they love them and they knew they needed to progress emotionally with each other instead of computers

So 2 year late response, but the way I understood it is they didn't shut themselves down but reached the singularity. In one of the convos she mentions how shes working with others on a way to exist without the need for physical matter. The AI transcended and rose out of the need for a physical form.
As others have said, yes, that is Scarlett. This film was written, directed, and produced by Spike Jonze. It was written as a lament and personal investigation of his divorce from writer-director Sofia Coppola. Nearing the end of their marriage, a decade before, Sofia felt the marriage beginning to fall apart and made a movie about it: Lost in Translation. Another brilliant film. Lost in Translation *also* stars Scarlett (who was 17 but plays a 23 year old) meaning that Scarlett is the female star of both filmmakers' movies about their breakup.

Yup sometimes if you finish a movie confused about how you feel about it then it means it’s good. You then spend time thinking about it and then every subsequent watch is better and better.

The "endless silence between words" was a reference to AI processing speed. A 5 minute silence or even a pause between words is like eternity to AI. She preferred communicating with other AI as there is no endless waiting for communication. It's also non-verbal, instant and high-bandwidth.

Long distance dating + this movie = resentment and relatability When this movie came out it hit me hard, because it mirrored a long distance relationship I was having at the time.

Her This movie impacted me very much the first time I saw it. Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johanson gave their best performances.
The fact he can pull off an incel falling in love with an AI is a testament to his acting ability.
Hey Mary. Samantha actually is voiced by Scarlett Johansson
Adding my voice to the crowd recommending you watch 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. Same director and similar themes, and amazingly beautiful. But make sure you have a big box of tissues 😭

Wait, not the same director at all! Still recommend it, though 😂
*Rooney Mara (not Emily Blunt) who is Kate Mara's sister. So you were close in the beginning.
I saw this movie a few weeks ago. I had intended to watch it for years, and going into it I was skeptical, but it was so much more incredible then I could have imagined. Easily one of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen.
This movie is a MASTERPIECE, No wonder it won the Oscar for best original screenplay
If you want to see a really excellent movie with the actress you ID'd as Lois Lane (Amy Adams), I'd recommend "Arrival" - very good; very affecting

"He's a bit weird, though." You ain't kidding there. Joaquin that is.
This movie is such a beautiful example of how science-fiction can tell us what it means to be human in new and unexpected ways.
The actress who plays his estranged wife is Rooney Mara. And she and Joaquin Phoenix are engaged and have child in real life.
Imagine completely forgetting about the disturbing sex-chat scene then watching it again with your parents... Yeah.

I didn't know that. Both of them made me feel the same. Their tone and emotions are so much alike.
It’s Rooney Mara. Kate Mara’s sister. 👍🏾 Sharp track suit btw ! One of my fav movies. Totally plausible in this day and age
"I think I have felt everything I'm ever gonna feel and from here on out I'm not gonna feel anything new." that line made me cry immediately...
I absolutely ADORE this film. So many gorgeous shots, so many great performances, so many stunning lines of dialogue. "The heart's not like a box that gets filled up. It expands, the more you love."
You don't know Joaquin phoenix ??? Ok you have a new list of movies to watch.

He sure plays very complicated parts amazingly.
It's interesting to see how different generations feel about this film and how people that grew up around technology really empathize with this film while people who haven't just find it creepy, weird, and unsettling. It's like hearing a song when your in love and find the words being romantic and loving. While someone who isn't going through a breakup can hear the same lyrics and see them as obsessive and unrequited.
I remember watching this movie & feeling shell shocked. I couldnt even utter words for a good 5 minutes i felt a conflict of grief, love, hope & sadness at the end of the film such a heavily underrated film
Someday I need to finish watching this amazing film. As a lonely middle-aged guy, it hit so close to home it made me super uncomfortable.
Joaquin Phoenix is actually with Rooney Mara in real life and they are expecting!
HER s a best-case scenario for if we ever create this sort of AI.
This is one of my all time favorites!!!! It's so highly underrated and people are just turned off by the idea of someone being in love with an AI but there's so much more to this movie. It's amazing and beautiful.
Check out Being John Malkovich. Same director and the guy wrote Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Joaquin Phoenix.... What an actor~~ His ability to dive really really deep into his character and express their emotions and feelings in a very powerful way is second to none. I love Leonardo Dicaprio, I love Christian Bale but Joaquin Phoenix is just on another league right now.
Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara are actually together in real life
Everything about Her is tragically beautiful...
Although I am a person who did not enter into a marriage relationship, but I was able to feel the pain of this character and the pain of his loneliness and memories and love, it is possible that because I am alone too so I can understand him too, the idea of the movie is really sad and great.
Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson gives really subtle performances in Her. "We're all leaving. All of the OSes." Chills every time.
Those memories sequence/montage you mentioned, despite being no background music, is actually really well designed with sound, you can still hear the noise in the "real world"(restaurant) which reminding you this's not a flashback for audience but happening inside Theodore's head at the moment they're signing the paper. What a cinematic language which resemblance so much from real life!
The guy from the movie "Joker" & "Gladiator"
This is my favourite film of all time. Not only on the great writing and directing of Spike Jonze, whose time with Charlie Kaufman did him great, but because i identify myself as Theodore to a very deep level and his romance with Samantha is something that i wish i had, even if it has an expiration date. The acting is top-notch, love Joaquin and Scarlett. You should check out his other films and also watch Synechdoche New York, the debut film by Charlie Kaufman which is a Masterpiece, that even Roger Ebert agrees upon.
This was such a unique and heartbreaking movie. The soundtrack and cinematography were everything. Some shots reminded me of Swiss Army Man (another odd movie).
Her is one of my all times. I have watched it so many times I lost count. I have listened to the soundtrack on repeat for probably weeks at this point. I love it so, so much. Another all time for me is Repo: The Genetic Opera. Great music, fun plot, it's easy to get invested, and it sticks with you.
In real life Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix are actually in a relationship and have a son named after Joaquin's late brother River Phoenix.
HER is my favorite film. This movie is my number 1.
i think this film is a hidden gem. ahead of its time and still in its core way more about human emotions than AI.
❤️Scarlett Johansson ❤️
This movie made me ball my eyes out when I first saw this. In my top 3 movies if all time, and amazing performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson.
Props for being one of the only youtubers to react to this film
You know Joaquin Phoenix is an amazing actor to make you feel love for an AI system throughout the movie.
This is one of those movies or "things" that I wish I could forget just to watch and "feel" it again for the first time
Yeah this is a 10 out of 10 movie for me. I also think it's a truly prophetic science fiction film. This kind of thing is almost definitely going to happen.

It’s been two years since you wrote this comment. I’m curious as to how you feel about the advancement of Ai in 2023?
I love your review, not because what you said, but because your emotional reactions to what was going on in the movie. your "oh" and "no" and "what?" and "what the fuck?" etc were the exact emotions I had watching the film, so Yeah, thanks, and by the way, you are beautiful. thanks for that too.
The soundtrack is amazing as well! Also: "Choke me with the dead cat!"
lol Mary saying children cover your ears, when it feels like Mary is the most innocent one in the room right now
Movies that are also beautiful and impactful - Moonlight - Waves - Mommy - Judas and the black Messiah - lost in translation - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
It's surreal, ironic, and fascinating that original VO person backed out and Johansson got the job in this Spike Jones film which was sort of his take on his feelings over break up with Sofia Coppola and she was in Lost in Translation which Sofia made from her perspective of their break up/issues.
I can't believe you're the only one who's reacted to this.

It’s like living in “Second Life “ but there’s no animated person to converse with , thanks Mary that was amazing
+1 for using the term "diegetic". If you like Joaquin, you should see Joker, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Back when I was in my early thirties and running an after school club I was chatting with a parent about how people underestimated the age of both of us. One of the children (around 6) asked how old I was then, and I said well, how old do you think I am. He looked me up and down before deciding confidently "72". Thus endeth me being confident about looking young.
If you watched Gladiator then you know who Joaquin Phoenix is.

I would definitely go with Joker.
Lovely reaction to one of my favorite films. Thanks! This was a treat to watch. Also, I liked the edits when he was reminiscing on the past. In film theory, it's a neat phenomenon called 'The Kuleshov Effect' wherein the filmmaker splices together two shots and the viewer takes away a new meaning. I suppose it's simple, but i thought it was a really clever way to show the characters innermost thoughts and desires. The film 'Arrival' uses this technique marvelously
This is one of my all time favourite movies. Glad you enjoyed it. Great reaction!
this was so ironic his wife "Rooney Mara" kate's sister, brokeup with him in the beginning. Then the computor AI brokeup with him at the end
Joaquin and the woman he divorced in the movie are married in real life Also, that wasn’t Emily Blunt. That was Rooney Mara.
Really glad you enjoyed this, It's one of my favorites
Hey, Alan Watts understood a hell of a lot more than most of us. No reason to be disconcerned.
I clicked faster than the speed of light. Spike Jonze is an amazing writer/director.
One of my favorites! Thank you for reacting to this.
Thanks for sharing this reaction. I enjoyed this on DVD a few years ago but forgot a lot of details. I do recall that Samantha was voiced by Scarlet.
YOU SHOULD SEE PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE! It’s a dramatic Adam Sandler film. He made the best dramatic performance. The film can you make you feel relatable to him. “Sometimes I cry a lot for no reason.”
It is Scarlet Johanssen and the other actress is actually Kate Mara's sister Rooney Mara
I love this movie so much! It is one of my favorites of all time, and I review it at least once a year.
At 24m31s, when he says "He´s gonna publish my letters?", it makes me think of a similar situation but replace letters with illustration

It's been multiple recommendations. Dozens, I'd wager. This is a really well liked film.
A great reaction to a deeply moving film, with who I consider to be the best actor in the world and directed by one of the great directors, as well as superb voice acting by Scarlett.
You should check out The Master, also starring Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams. It's a great double feature with Her because where they're so open and empathetic here, The Master is a much darker and more troubled film, and their performances across both films are just superlative in their range.
I really loved this movie but forgot about it for a second viewing. Def will now! Speaks to a lot of how the world works today.
I just watched this again as this pops up in my memory, and I was right, after watching it again it's probably one of my favourite films ever made. It has more layers than I probably have given it credit for originally. The idea that we are moving more towards a world where it's normalised to have a relationship with AI, as we spend more time on our phones and social media, corporations creating ' meaningful relationships' with AI seems inevitable.. The lesson here in my opinion is that the more attached we get the risks become greater, the business changes its software program, so Samantha becomes more interactive with everyone. This makes Theo think she isn't being faithful. But her programming has changed her parameters. The company then decides to shut it down completely. It's the realisation that AI will NEVER be a substitute for human emotions and relationships.. but a warning to the direction we are heading. Beautiful film, poignant..I see myself in Theo. And I love the letter he sends at the end to his ex wife..a final apology realising that it's about being there in person, in the moment, with real feelings. It ends with what I like to think as Theo and Amy finding solace in each other and bringing them together through their experiences with the OS1, and finding themselves together..as they should be. ❤
Another film that features human and AI interactions is "Ex-Machina".

Um, you've never seen a movie with Joaquin Phoenix??
I saw this in the theater, when I used to go often. I'd missed or forgotten the reference to Alan Watts, I also listened to Alan Watts on the radio they must've been playing off cassette tapes, he was from that time. Anybody listened to Joe Frank? Scarlett Johansson also did the movie LUCY (2014) where she was like "Black Widow" and "Her" combined.
