Henry VIII's gruesome execution of Margaret Pole
Under the reign of Henry VIII on May 27th 1541, at the age of 67, Margaret Pole Countess of Salisbury was executed for treason.
As part of his ‘Random History’ series, Kevin Hicks explores how and why a frail old lady, Margaret Pole, was executed under the orders of King Henry VIII and explains how her death was, an especially horrific event as the execution went badly wrong.

Henry VIII has a lot to answer for on judgement day when he stands before the Lord.
@CharlietheWarlock
4 ай бұрын
Yeah but in Christianity henry the 8th repented in the end took confession before he died and repented its historical that he did, so the judgement he will be before will be the bema seat judgement where Christians will be judged to where there works will be judged as gold or ash, the gold will be reformed into a crown for the Christian and the ash well nothing, so every act the Christian has done was for nothing, so henry the 8th will probably be the least in the kingdom of heaven or close to the least,most of his works will be turned into ash but his sins were covered by Jesus, so he won't be judged for them, that is Christianity in a nutshell

Never knew about this, what a terrible death. Channel has become one of my favorites as soon as I found it. Thank you for the great content.
Her deat can't be justified, however explaining it off as "a need for space", and a her being a "frail old lady," do her a disservice. For one, her family had a strong claim to the throne, and while Henry VIII held it, he knew based on 16 years worth of history at the time, that was tenuous at best. Her son reginald was also held in very high regard by Catholics who were still annoyed at Henry over the whole "breaking with Rome" thing. While many have written Margaret off as a meaningless old lady, she held a lot of sway. She was a threat to Henry. As for who ordered her execution. cromwell, the weasley little toad probably had more to do with getting the death warrant than anyone else. So knowing that his execution was just as messy when his time comes has a little bit of poetic justice to it.

Henry 8th was a monster. He wanted a son so much he butchered and divorced his wives. I think it's karma that his daughter Elizabeth I succeeded him. She was a truly exceptional Queen. Her mother Anne Boleyn did give him an heir. The Elizabethan age gave the world Shakespeare and a monarch who was probably the greatest English ruler.
For the second time now, you're reminding us that these were real people, that these aren't just stories to say "Wow, cool!" to. This was real life violence and injustice, and eleven swings to get the job done, oh my gosh. Picturing that as an actual scene taking place, the sounds, the horror, the fear you'd be able to sense in the woman... Five failed tries, surely the sixth will do it? No. Seven? Eight? All the while, the woman screaming and begging, eventually (and mercifully!) ending her life. It really isn't a "Wow, cool" situation at all. If it isn't utterly inappropriate, I'd like to thank you on behalf of the dead people you teach us about. They'll never get to thank you but I'm sure they'd appreciate your compassion, as I do. Cheers!

Well, thanks. Watching Laura Carmichael's wonderful performance as Margaret Pole in The Spanish Princess and had to know what really happened to her. Ghastly. I find historic torture and execution fascinating. Every aspect says something about being human whether you gave the sentence, were sentenced, or observed it. We learn the most about ourselves when faced with death from any point of view.
Would you consider doing a video on famous assassinations? There seems to be many in Western Europe. Thanks for watching! Wherever I can, I try to take first-hand accounts from the time which can be found in records and books. I also like to try to find, if possible, three different sources and then draw my own conclusions and stories from there.
