Henry's Honda. An SP1 Restoration. Part 3. RC51 RVT VTR 1000 rebuild inc shock strip

The strip down continues of the VTR1000 SP1 Honda. Today Dave strips the shock so it can be re plated and starts cleaning a few items to see if there's any more problems

Good to see the various stages of work. I did a similar restoration on a 2002 SP2 that had been in storage for 8 years near the coast and therefore badly corroded in places. It’s amazing how much time can be spent trying to remove daft items like individual rusted bolts when bigger jobs take 10 minutes!

Another interesting vid'. Quite educational how they come apart. You make it look deceptively easy. I think only someone looking for total originality would go to those lengths on the OEM shock, the plating, painting and a few hours labour would be pushing the costs close to "not worth it" levels. But there is something fascinating about seeing something bin-worthy brought back to life. Keep up the good work.

Oddly enough that had been painted from the factory, whereas as mates 2000 bike wasn't. A subtle difference I wouldn't have expected

The build quality helps, that's for sure. Simple things like the full length exhaust stud nuts really help stop studs rusting. I bet a Suzuki or Kawasaki wouldn't come apart so well

Interestingly they used those nasty bicycle crank bearings for the headstock. Same as my 5EB, though I've done a taper conversion- much better 🙂 * also, always mask up the machined surfaces where the brake discs bolt to. Power coaters tend to have heavy duty blasters which cause a real headache then trying to get the discs to run true, but we like powdercoat nonetheless. Of course you knew that already 😉

If its not too much trouble you could list the cost of the rear shock rebuild please With the seal kits , gas recharge , spring powder coating and body sleeve n collars zinc coating etc makes me wonder that while a replacement isnt OEM it might be financially attractive . Cheers n Merry Christmas

In total with the powder coating, re plate and seals, oil etc it'll be close to £200. With the plating and powder coating it helped that I was getting batches done which effectively reduced the price

@@obsession_engineering Thanks for the replay . Does that include all the prep work ? The main spring looked nasty . I'm particularly interested in the main body sleeve The rust looked pretty rough in places . I wonder how they treat that before plating

From memory they come out relatively easily. Should just be a case of support bike, undo bolts for shock and slip it out. I'll be doing another this week, if I find anything more awkward I'll let you know.

The original SP1 was notoriously sprung/shimmed quite stiff/harsh. Great on the track, can get quite uncomfortable on the road. Have you considered re shimming it/spring for road riding?

I rode the bike before I stripped it and although firm I actually didn't think it was too bad. Though I do love a Kawasaki so ride comfort isn't my priority! I actually want the bike to ride like an SP1, firm and direct. With some setup adjustments to the stock equipment it'll ride well

I fitted 20mm preload spacers, changed out the compression valves (can't remember which ones I used, was 20 years ago), and I dropped the yoke down the forks by 5mm. It transformed the bike. Before the mods the front felt a bit vague.

I have an SP2 and an RC45 with the SP2 suspension is set on H is this standard because it is a very stiff suspension setup on the SP2 I take it it's the same on the SP1..??

It's good quality stuff but the stock setup is on the racey side, which I quite like if I'm honest. There's some interesting info in the upcoming fork rebuild which should help... I think the SP2 is slightly different, not miles apart but tweaked a little
