Henry Cooper OBE KSG (1934-2011), 76, UK Professional boxer

Sir Henry Cooper OBE KSG (3rd May 1934 - 1st May 2011), 76, was an English heavyweight boxer. Cooper held the British, Commonwealth, and European heavyweight titles several times throughout his career, and unsuccessfully challenged Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight championship in 1966. Following his retirement from the sport, Cooper continued his career as a television and radio personality; he was the first (and is today one of four people) to twice win the public vote for BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award and is thus far the only boxer to be awarded a knighthood.

I have admired Henry ever since I listened (and watched the next day) to his fight with Muhammad Ali, then Cassius Clay, in 1963. I was just 10 years old and took a huge interest in boxing immediately. I followed Henry's (and Ali's) career ever since . Two great performances against Ali, with the first being so close to a victory. I used to record all of his fights that were broadcast on radio. It is my recording of the 1963 fight, 4th interval, that forever disproves those rumours of it being extra long ! Both Henry and Cassius were winners that night ! Always nice to see Henry as a guest, on TV shows and in the TV adverts. I followed all of his fights by radio and reports in the Daily Telegraph. (I hadn't yet discovered Boxing News ) ! The Telegraph did good, in depth reports of boxing. Certainly in the 1960s. I enjoyed all of his fights. He wasn't just a 'one famous fight' boxer. He continued to defend his British and Empire heavyweight titles and gained 3 Lonsdales belts. A great achievment! He defeated Karl Mildenburger for the European title and defended it a couple of times against , from memory, a couple of un-savory characters (apologies incase I am mistaken). Certainly Henry suffered heavy foul punches, below the belt, in one of his European defences against Pierro Thomasini , but delivered his 'Hammer' to get the victory. I am proud to have some Henry Cooper signed photo's from the 1950s , plus a large signed picture of Henry against Ali in their 1966 re-match ! Henry Cooper is my favourite boxer ever and Muhammad Ali is a close second. Great respect to Henry for all he achieved, and the enjoyment his career brought to me as I grew up. Finally, I don't think he lost that match with Joe Bugner ! My very best wishes to Henry's son's who are also very charming and a credit to Henry Cooper and their mum. Henry will always be remembered with affection . David.

I was born in 1970, shortly before Henry retired after being denied his rightful victory over Bugner by a very poor decision. Junior school boys in the late 70's knew all about Henry Cooper, we knew he was the only man to knock The Great Muhammed Ali down in his physical peak. We all loved Ali, but Henry even more so. I vividly recall watching him on, 'This Is Your Life,' and recall Ali appearing as a surprise guest right at the end of the show. Ali spoke extremely highly of Henry, and more or less admitted that he was saved by the bell that night in 1963. Henry Cooper was a great sportsman, a superb boxer, highly courageous, and a thoroughly decent, very likeable man- an absolute gentleman. He's one of the greatest and most likeable sportsman Britain has ever produced- and greatly missed. RESPECT.

Ali was not saved by the bell, he was up on his feet at 3; no boxer, let alone Cooper could have kept Ali on the deck. I'll always remember him as a bitter man who couldn't accept that the better man beat him in his last fight, and then tried to ruin Bugner with his moaning. He ' beat ' Folley with a hometown decision, then couldn't last 2 rounds in the return, apart from that who of any substance did he beat? Chuvalo, Quarry, Spencer, McNeeley, Lincoln, Terrell, Daniels, Martin, are among those he didn't meet; of course he was supposed to fight Ellis but the Board wouldn't sanction it, just as well. One final name, Sonny Liston; Wicks turned him down in '58, I wonder why ?

Maybe not saved by the bell but saved by the hole in the gloves trick & illegal salts. Cooper would of finished Ali if the fight carried on immediately as the video proves. He fought the best (Ali) & could of beat the best (again as the video proved.) Also he wasn't bitter, just saying his point. The public ruined Bugner not Cooper.
