Henri Dutilleux - Cello Concerto (Tout un monde lointain...)

00:00 - I. Énigme: Très libre et flexible
"... Et dans cette nature étrange et symbolique" (from Poème XXVII)
06:53 - II. Regard: Extrêmement calme
"... le poison qui découle
De tes yeux, de tes yeux verts,
Lacs où mon âme tremble et se voit à l'envers" (from Le poison)
14:22 - III. Houles: Large et ample
"... Tu contiens, mer d'ébène, un éblouissant rêve
De voiles, de rameurs, de flammes et de mâts..." (from La chevelure)
18:48 - IV. Miroirs: Lent et extatique
"... Nos deux cœurs seront deux vastes flambeaux
Qui réfléchiront leurs doubles lumières
Dans nos deux esprits, ces miroirs jumeaux..." (from La mort des amants)
24:20 - V. Hymne: Allegro
"Garde tes songes:
Les sages n'en ont pas d'aussi beaux que les fous !" (from La voix)
Written from 1967-1970 for Mstislav Rostropovich, Tout un monde lointain... (A whole distant world...) is one of Dutilleux few masterworks (not for lack of talent, Dutilleux published few pieces.) Each movement is inspired by poetry from the Symbolist/Decadent French poet Charles Baudelaire. Like many of Dutilleux's works the entire pieces features a dreamlike surrealist atmosphere with masterful, layered orchestral textures. His harmonic language is very French with clear influences from Messiaen, Debussy, Ravel etc. but nevertheless with a unique voice of his own. I chose the Nicolas Altstaedt performance for the better sound quality. I love Rostropovich but the orchestra is much too quiet in that recording for me. I made this video for study reasons so orchestral clarity is my number one priority. I apologise in advance for any bad page turns; this is my first score video.
I do not own the rights to the audio or the score. This video is for purely educational purposes to score-read and study the textures.

I find this music so utterly strange and beautiful ... Appropriate both to the title and to the poet whose poetry inspired this composition. Marvelous! And appropriate as well to listen to as I write of a strange and lovely dream I had last night involving a columned building like an ancient Greek temple, a coral snake, an addled mind, and love ....

Absolutely awesome concerto, with a poetic afterthought. The progressive entrance of the orchestra (often scattered), beginning with percussion and divided strings, is quite noticeable and gives a tone to the whole piece.

Unfortunately there isn't much to choose from since he disowned most of the music he wrote-that was actually good lol. Try the Poemes de Jean Cassou and Le Loup

Saw this at a performance where it was paired with selections of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty… while it may seem like an odd pairing, both works have a certain magic and mystique to them, frightening in the amount of passion they both possess. It took a remarkably long time for Dutilleux to finish this, and one can understand why. 12:34

I’m going into the basement…never go because it’s always locked…not today…it’s very dark…strange smells and sounds…the feeling that I’m not alone…I feel warm breath on my neck…I turn around and there’s nobody there…I run up the stairs…the door’s locked…I start to panic…I hear a soft female voice quietly calling my name…the voice gets louder…sweat drips into my eyes…everything turns gray…gray…gray…

The piccolo solo from 15:45 - 16:10 is reminiscent of a significant motif in the “Jeux des vagues” of “La Mer”… I wonder if it’s just a coincidence, given the subtext of the Dutilleux movement (“mer d’ébène”)
