Helping Out Up Bryant's Gully

I had a spare day between leading clients so I thought I'd head up my favourite scramble; Bryant's Gully, and then continue on to the Glyders, aiming for a grade 3 scramble that I wanted to do on Glyder Fach. However, my plans were to change a little bit and I ended up making some new friends instead.

    Yeah, a wide-angle lens will always distort things, sometimes making them look worse than they are and sometimes the opposite! Basically, when I slow down and start moving very carefully and calculated it's probably a good indication that I'm on the edge of a very high drop. Haha.

    Went up earlier this year after the wettest 18 months on record. Rather than just being wet and slimy it was a proper torrent running through. Nasty! Glad to see you had a bit of difficulty with it and made the choice to bypass sections. It’s an important part of scrambling on the mountains to make those decisions, especially when you’re solo. Probably best gully scramble I’ve done.

    I honestly can't understand how scramblers and rock climbers put so much faith into the "holds" and "footings". Just messing about, I've had seemingly solid rocks and ledges dislodge or pull out. Ill stick to watching the videos!! 😄

  • @BraveDave

    @BraveDave

    3 жыл бұрын

    You quickly get a feel for what is solid and what's likely to move. I think the biggest danger is when you have a large rock which seems like it should be completely solid, but it's not buried in the ground very far and could suddenly break loose if pulled sideways. The rule of thumb is to try and push up on a rock, not pull up on it. But yes, if you stick to watching the videos then I'll stick to making them. Hope you enjoy them :)

    Brilliant and entertaining video. Thank you 😊 Though I had anxiety all the way through it I could see how competent and knowledgeable you are about scrambling so that made it quite exciting. It's great how you helped that family and I'm sure you put them at ease. I love scrambling but after traversing Crib Goch recently I decided not to do anything like it again simply because though I have a head for heights and I'm brave, I discovered that my sense of balance was off kilter. So now I'd like to do more scrambling but not so hairy ones. Can you recommend a nice little scramble but not too scary please Dave? Subscribed

    They were following the guide book, but Bryant's is extra tricky when there's more water, and if you need to climb out the side of it then the route becomes a bit more complicated than just following straight up the gully. The first time I went up there I didn't know what to expect either! But yeah, I'm glad they met me too :P
