Helping Kittens with Ringworm!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Kittens who have ringworm are completely treatable, but they need some extra support in order to become fungus-free. In this video, I'll tell you all about this funky fungus, show you how I care for ringworm kittens in my house, and encourage you to consider fostering ringworm kittens for your local shelter!

When I was 7yrs old we got a kitten from a shelter, she was my favourite kitten EVER. She used to sleep snuggled next to me, and was super affectionate. Of course after a few weeks I came down with a rash. My father had 2 marks, my mother had about 10 and my brother had about 20, even the dog had a few, I on the other hand had, well my mother stopped counting at 300. My parents took Smokey to the vets, and told me that she had been given to someone who would be able to treat her. I was devastated when I discovered several years later that she'd been euthanized. Although it's been almost 50 years since Smokey was killed I still get upset when I think about her. Please if you have the time and ability to help these kittens go for it, they are worth it.

Added to that my mother had to take unpaid time off work to look after my brother and me with all the work that entails, so I'm not surprised they didn't think they could treat a kitten too.

Any type of fungus is definitely something people who are immunocompromised in any way should stay away from. In the lab, it is considered a level 2-3 pathogen, which means that it has to be in a negative-pressure space, have special storage/incubators, and has to be sealed at (almost) all times. As a microbiologist, that is one of those things that freaks me out (if not also because it looks terrifying when it's growing on plates.)

I find kitten in street covered by mites and all fungus, I decided to adopt it. vet tell me it will take a months for kitten to recover. One day I got infected by ringworm and cost me quite much to heal it at hospital. doctor said to me I should let go the kitten, cause ringworm got me in many places of my body spread so quickly in 4 days. I dunno what to do. when I see my kitten eyes, I know I cant let go the kitten. Now I healed in 2 weeks, while still treating my kitten using gloves and sanitizer. its been a month and my kitten havent healed, I using miconazole evry 2 weeks, virgin coconut oil, ketoconazole cream. I want to give oral medicate but afraid if he will get sick after it. I hope this video will help me 😢

Hannah, what you are doing is SO SO important. I was totally uneducated about fostering kittens and TNR before I discovered your channel last week and have since watched A LOT of your videos. Yesterday I sent out an application to foster kittens to my local shelter and they immediately asked me if I would be willing to take in kittens that were being treated for URIs, which they said would be very easy to treat. I of course said yes and immediately went to the shelter to pick up what I thought would be a small litter of kittens. Instead they when I arrived I was introduced to this lone kitten, Goldie, with an eye infection that needed a 3 different drops 2x a day and a oral antiviral 2x a day. The coordinator thought this would be a good match for me so I was excited to take her in. I should be taking care of her until the 16th if her infection clears up. I only picked her up yesterday but I definitely plan on fostering more kittens and I am so thankful to you that I actually started fostering! It is seriously all thanks to you! You are doing such good work and should be so proud!

Autumn Fink...thanks for fostering URI as that is a terrible illness for the shelter to deal with. I adopted a young cat with a terrible case of URI. Usually these are cured in a couple of weeks but she had a very strong strain of it. Ended up having to change her antibiotic from Clavamox to Zithromax and which finally kicked it, she was very sick for a month. We kept the house warm but she especially liked to sit in the bathroom when someone took a hot steamy shower. I also made a tea out of loose dry catnip, cooled down water to warm and encouraged her to drink it which she did a bit. May have had drops for the eyes as well, not sure can’t remember its been 10 years. Turned out sweetest cat I own (I have 4). Never got ill again with anything much.

Btw if anyone does end up in this situation: for me, I had clothes I only wore into the kitten. I had some flipflops I could wear (since I couldn't steam clean the carpet everyday...) and then bleach after. Any toys they may come in contact with can be cleaned; i used dish soap and LOTS of hot water. Same with the scratching post I had for Mama. For the carpet, I went over it with the steamer a few times following the litter. My friend recommended putting down Borax and I also got a LOT of carpet cleaner (varying brands). Since there were so many kittens and they were old enough that a pen couldn't contain them, I would go into the room, take care of their needs, spend some time, and take a VERY THOROUGH shower. I mean make sure the water is hot and soap down EVERY PART OF YOU that came into contact. It may sound weird, but I used dish soap for this - the Dawn stuff that I used when I gave the kitten I found in the woods a bath for fleas(using Kitten Lady's flea bath technique - excellent!) Original, blue, Dawn dish soap. Lather down your feet, legs, arms, hands, shoulders, neck, face (stop around the eyes of course) - any part of you that MIGHT have been in contact with the spores. I'm not sure these were all the best techniques, but for the three weeks that I cared for my ringworm babies (before they were cleared), it kept me, my cat, and eventually my new kitten (from the woods) safe and free of ringworm.

He was found in a dumpster as a really small kitten that I slept on the couch with for a week end to keep him warm because we thought he wasn't going to make it. He was ate up with ringworm and he only had small patches of fur on his body. Needless to say he is a healthy, spoiled, junkyard dog of a cat now 7 years later.

Also once I realize that the ringworm is gone off the cat I made sure not to touch her too much because of course I didn’t want her to get it back😊

shazy love For humans, but I imagine it would work on animals as well. You just use as much as you need and you’ll want to dilute it a bit as vinegar, being acidic, can irritate the skin. You can do half water/half vinegar or 3 parts vinegar, 1 part water for a stronger solution. Put it in a little bottle and apply it with a q tip on the spot 2 or 3 times a day. If you use organic unfiltered vinegar, shake up the bottle first before applying. Last time I had a ringworm years ago I went to town on that thing, and I did straight vinegar. I still have a very faint mark where it was. Works great and fast.

Hi. I watch your videos all the time! I'm 12 and I go to my local shelter and pull kittens to foster all the time. One longhaired kitten got ringworm on both his ears. I treated him 3 times a day for a month with ointment and fungal spray. Now Ash is all better and is getting his freedom ride to NY Monday on transport!💓Thank you for all of your tips. At the shelter, they sadly have to put down kittens with ringworm(ones that were covering half their body). But, I clean all of the kittens cages whenever I am there to try to prevent spreading.💗

For most people who don't know what it's like to catch this, it's itchy. That's all. A little antifungal cream fixes it no problem. To keep it from spreading from you, use a bandage over the infected area. This also helps to keep the medication from rubbing off right away. The reason for me mentioning this is some time infections happen when looking after sick animals so knowing how to treat yourself can be just as important and helping them After all they need you to be the best you.

That is so awesome! It is so exciting to jump right in, but my advice is to start off with a group of kittens that just needs to grow or a mom with her kittens. It is A LOT to learn in the beginning. Hannah makes it look so easy! Also, starting with easier litters lets you slowly accumulate the stuff you need- which can seem like a mountain of stuff for such tiny kittens!! Good luck with fostering! I just started fostering kittens, not just dogs, in the last year and a half.

My local shelter was really bad at taking care of cats (I say 'was' because they no longer take in cats at all) and the two kittens we'd adopted from them were part of a litter that had ringworm. I don't know what they did but the poor kitties weren't socialized at all and were absolutely terrified of humans. It took several years for one of our cats to finally open up to us--which is a shame because they're both absolute snugglebugs now. It's so great that people like you are spreading proper treatment for ringworm in kittens

I had a cat who had ringworm so bad it passed on to me, and I had no idea what was happening. Thankfully he was an adult cat so it wasnt as bad, but yes it's very treatable and no repercussions for kitty or human. Just get to a vet, they gave me a medicated shampoo and worked like a charm for him.

I was all set up to foster my first 3 kittens my daughter rescued from a neighbor’s yard. They were surrendered to the shelter so they were the “owners”. I was told today all three have ringworm. Thank you for this video. I am very disappointed, but you helped me understand that I am not experienced enough to care for these sweet babies.

I appreciate Kitten Lady making this video, my kitten had ringworm when I first got home about 2 months ago. I wish this was here when he first got it! He's all cleared up now, but I don't think I completely agree with ringworm being not a big deal (besides not being fatal). I had my kitten on the MOST rigorous treatment possible. Antifungal shampoos 2x a week, topical and oral medication, and he was quarantined while regularly having his area entirely disinfected. It is NOT easy and the worst part is how stressful it is for the kitten having to be quarantined. It was literally a nightmare that I just wanted to be over. Not even to mention the vet bills that went into it. So PLEASE do not underestimate how hard it is, because many websites and people will tell you its not that bad, but unless you can stand hearing your kitten constantly meowing when you can't be in the room, constantly disinfecting everything they come into contact with including yourself and your clothes, and constant treatment, its no joke. It was seriously awful.

If you can afford to buy disposable clear plastic gloves (not the big heavy kinds you clean dishes with, like hospital nurse gloves) and your ringworm kitten is fairly small and you’re pretty sure you can pet and touch them and hold them like Kitten Lady does, absolutely do so. Just throw away the gloves later. Even if your cat is big and can’t be picked up with them, you should still pet them and talk to them. Starving a housecat of physical contact is incredibly bad for their psychological development, especially if they’re still a kitten. House cats are descended not from solitary hunters like tigers and leopards, but from African cats that live in colonies and are raised and hunt together. Ignoring them will scar and damage them the way it would a human baby. Human babies even die if they aren’t held enough. Their brains release certain hormones and chemicals from being held and touched that they need to survive. I’m not blaming you guys for not getting or being able to afford gloves, I’m just telling anyone who has a kitten with ringworm that they should try to still touch it and stroke it, just with disposable plastic gloves, if they can.

I just found a 3 weeks old kitten that almost ran over by car and 90% of her body has fungus and ringworm (is it the same thing?). It's my 1st time and I just put her in my room. When I know more about the ringworm and fungus, I have to clean and throw away the carpets. Disinfected the room twice. Create an area to quarantine her. And had to go to vet twice a week because of her bad condition which flatten out my wallet. Everyday give her oral med and cream. Med bath 2x a week. And I really hope it ends faster. I can't bear to look at her had endure this 😢 And since quarantine she would eat when I was there only 😢

When we first got my cat, Fiona, a little orange tiger stripped tabby, we didn't know that she had ringworm. So, about two weeks later, I noticed that I started to have little circulated spots on my neck and chest. I told my mother, and I noticed that she had a small spot on her arm. By the time we knew what was happening, my grandparents' house, my house, and my father's house had contracted ringworm. My other cat at the time, Nobie, (rest in peace), also got it. Overall, it took months to get rid of it. It was terrible. We had to put cream on everyday.

My current cat came home from the shelter as a too tiny kitten with ringworm. We used a medication that had to stay on for 15 min. (who designs something like that for a kitten?) I would take the kitten into the shower and lather him up, then hand him out to my mom, who would wrap him up in a towel and cuddle him under the electric blanket so he'd stay warm. After 15 min., I'd take him back into the shower to rinse then hand him back out to Mom, who'd dry him under the electric blanket while I cleaned and sanitized everything. Team work is everything!

My cat was rescued from a hoarding situation with over 40 infected ringworm cats from a home in Quebec. No shelters in the province would take all the cats so they were moved down to Ontario to a humane society that had a vet who specialized in treating ringworm. I adopted her as she going through treatment and it was so devastating to see all the poor babies and adult cats suffering from such extreme cases of ringworm. We would visit the shelter almost everyday and would have to enter the ringworm quarantine room full of cats while wearing gloves, masks, shoe covers, and coats just to say hi to her. I wanted to kiss her so bad! None of the cats were euthanized, the ringworm cleared up, they were all adopted out and then another huge batch of ringworm cats came in from a different hoarding situation. So sad, but there is hope and I'm so thankful all the kitties were rescued and treated. I cannot express how much I love my cat, she's healthy, free of rindworm, loved, and happy now :)

My parents adopted a kitten with who had apparently previously been treated for ringworm but the vet we got him from thought he was free of it when we adopted him. A few weeks after moving him in, we began seeing signs of ringworm and, unfortunately since he had been integrated in with our other kitties, he and our other three cats at the time had to be Lyme dipped and the entire house had to be sanitized. We thought we had finally kicked it but then, months later, he started showing signs of ringworm AGAIN on his nose so the process had to be repeated. Fortunately the vet we worked with comped us on the Lyme baths since they felt responsible. We had been going to this vet for years and they always did an amazing job with our cats and rabbits (it’s hard to find great vets for rabbits) so I hardly held it against them since ringworm is extremely contagious. He hasn’t had ringworm since. I remember my mom scrubbing the kitchen floor and the smell of the Lyme dip

When I was a teenager, (I am 49 now) I visited a friend who had a new kitten. I ended up with a ringworm on my right upper thigh where I held her kitten. It is so very easily treated and IT IS NOT A WORM. I was grossed out thinking I had a worm tasked to take over my whole body.🤦🤪🤣😂 I now have a kitten myself and I noticed that she had, what I thought was a scab on her tail. It wasn't until I developed a ringworm on my chest, ( my kitten likes to sleep close to me) that I realised that I must have contracted it from my kitten. I booked an appointment with my Vet to have my kitten microchipped and vaccinated and I mentioned what I suspected... ...the ringworm. I am so grateful that I did. My lovely Vet bought out the U.V light. Yep, my kitten, lit up the green colour. I had my darling canine with me and he also lit up green under the U.V light. The three of us are fine. I bathed kitten in Maliceb twice a week, leaving it on for 10 minutes every time. I also put Betadine foam directly onto her 4 little ringworms twice a day. Ringworm isn't a worm. It is equivalent to athlete's foot. Easy to treat and easier to treat than head lice. Easier to treat than scabies.

First of all, try to wash blankets and sofa covers or at least sanitize them, look out for pink spots on your hands for 2-3 weeks, if there are any, you should also buy an ointment for humans. Do as a doctor prescribed. You can wash your floors with a diluted bleach especially places where the cat likes to hangout. Also look out for your dog, maybe it will also need treatment.

I had adopted a kitten from a shelter and in the first week of having him took him to 5 different vet visits because I knew something was wrong with him but none of the vets agreed with me - until the last one. I took him back to the shelter for their vet to look him over and she saw what I saw - he had something wrong with his skin (and a respiratory infection). She had me take him back to our regular vet with documented confirmation of skin fungus, and even though they said they were fairly certain it was ringworm, they still had to take a culture and wait 14 days for it to mature. Meanwhile, his ringworm was spreading and he was losing his fur, too. They never told me to give him baths, to quarantine him, to worry about transference, nothing. Results come back two weeks later he has ringworm, but oh no, the vet is out of medicine for it and we have to wait another week. Meanwhile, I got ringworm from the cat and his skin was looking painful and unpleasant. We finally got medicine for him in form of oral and topical, and that is all they wanted us to do for him (no mention of baths or anything, and I didn't know any better). His ringworm did go away, but mine was around for months after. It's scary when you see it happening to this helpless little kitten, especially the lesions - I was a super panicky new furmama in that situation. It is treatable, but the delay for testing and to get a vet to listen to you can be frustrating. It's really nothing to have it yourself, you just use a topical ointment on the ring spot, no irritation or anything. Don't fear ringworm kittens, just make sure you have a vet who listens to you and is *helpful*!

I love that the kitten lady has these videos. I just started fostering myself - cats and kittens - and my 6th and 7th fosters, adult cats, have ringworm. I knew about it beforehand and let me tell you, I was scared to take them but I did it anyway. This video gives me a bit more confidence in treating ringworm

So glad this video exists! I start work as a kennel tech for a feline sanctuary on Monday, and about 6 litters in quarantine have ringworm infections. I am so excited to take care of them and make sure they’re clean and healthy! 💞💞

My kittens used to have ringworm, and it was hard work. My cat, Alexis, 3 months at the time. She had it in her paws and tail. We brought them to the vet, and gave her medicine. We cleaned out her cage, and kept her away from her two brothers, Kobi and Navi. It continued like this for 2 weeks. Luckily, nobody else got ringworm. We were lucky. Anyone else have experience with ringworm?

Thank you so much for this! Fostering a kitten, with ringworm, that would have been put down by the local shelter and this has made me feel so much better. You guys are amazing!

I had a kitten called Gremlin! She was just the sweetest thing, she had large ears and was quite sick giving her the slight appearance of a Gremlin. I let my parents name her for some reason and they named her that. She’s better now!

XStarX XWolfX ...you can call her whatever you like, cats can learn and will respond to multiple names just like people. Nicknames for instance. I have multiple cats (4) and names for all my cats, each cat knows all the names and nicknames of not only their own but they know who I’m talking to when i use a nickname of another cat.

Hey my hero....rescued KitKat almost two years ago. Brought her to my amazing vet....she had spelling?? sarcoptic mange.....OMG...that was an experience. Fully worth it. My vet gave me one of those 3x4 'cages' and we commenced. She is such a loving and super playful kitty. And, Abby and Ziva [litter mates adopted from my vet, rescued too] accept her completely. Though, there is no bond like that of a bonded pair of litter mates. Love what you do. You are amazing.
