Interesting video. Never seen anyone scale their own logs. Must be nice to live where you and the mill trust each other.

Well, it’s not so much I get to scale my own logs. This is a personal sale in this case. The sawmill is just doing the sawing. However, I do scale my loads a lot of the time just to make sure that what the mill comes up with jives with what I got. There are crooks everywhere and its pays to pay attention to things. Of course, once you’ve dealt with a saw mill man a while, you pretty much know if he’s beating you. There are times when my sawmill man gets me to scale them for him. But he trusts me and knows I scale like he does. Anyway, thx for the kind words my friend and for watching and commenting. Take care and do come again, please

Great learning video! I really enjoyed seeing it! I used to workbat a sawmill cutting logs like yours and grading them into different grades. We also made pallets there too! 2 or 3 days of sawmill work and then 2 days of building pallets. I love the smell of wood just cut! You have a great fhannel and "Helper" too! Haha, I doubt it. She will probably be a teacher. She loves teaching and such like her mom does. But she does enjoy hanging out with me and I am grateful for that. We had 2 kinds of log scales, one was a multable fold rule, I'm sure you are familiar with them, the other one was like a yard stick like the one your using , only it had a round handle on one end and a catch (hook) o n the other end, it measured the outside of the bark, i'm pretty sure it was calculated to give correct board feet.

Good morning Mr.Odom, perhaps ive missed it but i was wondering if you have a video of showing how you move your equipment from job site to job site. Like how do you transport your log wagon or log cart or even the skid steer.

So board feet means if you sawed a log and layed the boards end to end it would add up to the number of board feet you marked?

Lemme explain it like this…one board foot is defined as a board 1” thick by 12” wide and 12” long. So a 1x12x12 would have 12 board feet. Does that make sense? A 2x12x12 would 24 board feet in it. And so on…

Is there a benefit to use mules over tractor?

To me there is..1. It doesn’t tear up the ground as much using animals. And doesn’t tear up as much young timber. 2. Sustainable regrowth is better in selective thinning stands. 3. The animals can help you on their on vs a machine that has to be driven. 4. For me, it’s more peaceful and slower paced. Less overhead It’s not for everyone or every tract of timber either.
