HELP! I Can't Turn OFF my LIGHTS! & Cooling Fans ON Full BLAST? ('14 VW TDI)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Owner of this hot German Hatchback says that his Daytime Running Lights stay ON ALL THE TIME...
He also mentioned that the Check Engine Light came on about the same time that the lighting problems started.
When he pulls into the shop, I noticed that the COOLING FAN was ON FULL BLAST...what the heck?
Let's see what is going on with this VW...
I have a feeling that we can't blame the Euro engineers for this DISASTER!

Maybe I'm just old, but I continue to be surprised that ANYone would purchase a vehicle off of FB market place. As best as I can tell, this vehicle had at least (3) red flags on it BEFORE he even purchased it. Some of these young guys (apparently) have no older Dad, mentor, mechanic or friend to bounce these ideas off of before getting themselves into.....this. Thanks Ivan.

I bet someone has messed with the coding of J519, that is very adjustable (you can turn on and off outputs from the ecu on certain pins) with something like Ross Tech VCDS, in the wrong hands, the coding can be screwed up. Always do a full scan prior to playing with the coding so you can revert back to the original if you screw it up. That goes for all the écus when retrofitting components like MFSW, cruise control, PDC etc. Also the cold and hot bulb monitoring can be turned off when fitting Mickey Mouse bulbs to stop the bulb error warning showing up. If you have access to SVM via the factory, the coding can be reset to the original factory coding. Another nice video Ivan.

The main problem with soldering is that it makes a hardened spot for the wire to just break again right near the solder joint. So I always have a habit of tying down and securing an inch or two each way from the solder joint to ensure that it won't have fatigue breakage from movement. Of course, taped up inside a loom, you're probably not going to have that issue. Most people do take time to at least tape over solder joints, so it's normally fine. It's just the pig tails that really can be risky--- since you're wire is dangling out on it's own right near the connector, etc.. Those tend to break again. You can wrap a little splint over it with a few inches of 12 gauge solid wire (house wire) and that will keep it from bending too, if there's nothing else to tie it to. I always believed in solder over crimp--- until getting a fancy ratchet crimper that makes a perfect crimp.. Now I'm happy either way. It's kind of nice when your patch job looks like a factory crimp sometimes; I'm not against either one.

  • @thephantom1492

    @thephantom1492

Crimp is not better imo, it gives a pinched point where it can bend and break. The main difference is that usually crimps come with some plastic around it to prevent movement. A layer or two of good heatshrink, ideally double walled (i.e with glue) work wonder. It is stiff enough to make bending hard, and usually the wire bend after the shrink instead.

The central electric's module in these cars requires either a resistor or a correct wattage bulb to function. My friend installed aftermarket LED's in his 2008 vw r32 and it caused all kinds of issues. The module will disable circuits if it doesn't find the correct wattage lamp in the socket. Even load resistors didn't tell the computer there was the proper lamp in the socket so it would just disable it. Had thrown all of his old lamps out and had to go to the store and buy all new lamps. He gave me all the LED's which is in a pile of junk in my storage room.

The lights can be coded for different models. The DRLs were probably coded wrong, because you can set them to European or North America DRL modes and they can be set to different percentage or dimming. I Know you can set them to come on as soon as the vehicles moves or when the ignition is set on but I don't know what or if there's a setting to leave them on. I know on some European vehicles you can leave your ambers on to park in an alley for safety even if your car is off. You can even set the fogs as the DRL and have them turn off for the blinker like we see on most vehicles now. You can't turn off the monitors of the lights for LEDs since it wants to monitor, but you can turn off the cold diagnosis.

Some VW modifiers play with module coding on VCDS/OBD Eleven thinking that they are making their car cooler. They normally forget to take a screenshot of the values before they start changing them, then they create problems. The lighting side of VCDS has loads of values that can be adjusted, for example different light intensity, different types of light systems, different country of sale, etc. I suspect someone installed those nasty aftermarket headlights, messed with the coding in VCDS to try and get a particular bulb to work, then changed the pins in the connector. When they get modified like this and they're poorly crash repaired, they are only fit for breaking/parting out, otherwise you end up with a money pit.

We see really nice cars in the salvage yards as well as "easy" no start problems where a customer freaks out because their cars might be a few years old and simply gives up on it; rather use the money that would've gone to the dealer diagnostic/repairs as a down payment for a new car. Cars broadly made for an international market have a lot of the lighting behaviours configurable. (Mine had settings for the headlights for Xenon, it dispensed with the CANBUS checking).

You might want to inform the customer that the computer program controlling everything doesn't have AI yet, so it can't adjust for some different loads in the wiring on its own. But those German engineers are probably working on it. So more modules might be coming. That Sylvania bulb box reminded me of when I decided to change my Expedition headlights to those brighter ones Sylvania was advertising everywhere. They are a lot brighter, but I kept getting flashed by oncoming traffic so often, that I had to go back to the factory bulb on the drivers side. That solved the problem.

I would like to argue that the problem is not so much the bulbs but the fact that using a bulb which uses much less current than the OEM one would make some electronic module throw a fit over it. Back when it was just a fuse and switch/relay, doing this would actually put less stress on the circuit. Diagnostics is tricky and sometimes fun (better fun to tricky ratio with experience) but I still despise the overall gadget-bloating of cars. The only parts of the car I find beneficial to manage via precise electronics are the drivetrain and brakes. Everything else is just complexity for the sake of planned obsolescence and fat repair bills while parts are still available. More work for diagnosticians that can keep up but overall completely unnecessary.

My philosophy with daytime running lights is to eliminate the feature. My reasoning is they are bright enough at sunrise/sunset to "make you forget" to turn on the running light light system (tail lights....). Yea I got a could of warnings/tickets for this... This should not affect the running light system (full headlight system). I don't know the safety inspection laws in Ivan's neck of the woods, but my solution would be to keep them off. With older cars it usually involved putting tape on a relay pin (could cut the pin off... could cut the wire). From the wiring diagram Ivan showed and the looks at the connectors it looks like a no brainer. De-pin the running light left and right wire at the head light connectors. This may generate an engine check light... Again could be a problem with a car inspection. Simple symptom analysis... could be the modified headlights were drawing too much current for the running light circuit and cooked the controller.

Interesting... my relative's VW 5 series car have the reverse lights stuck off when in reverse gear on manual gearbox, the bulb, circuit board for bulbs in rear was ok, reverse light switch ok, wires all ok, I diagnosed the central electric module fault. Replacement of central electric module will be too expensive so the person declined it. Can always wire to the reverse light switch in manual gearbox to battery plus and a relay but the error codes will remain on dash with "bulb" warning stuck on. So some mofset in the central elec module got stuck off, there was like a voltage left of 0,7 (should be 13-14) or so in the lights when ON. OFF 0 volts. I think before this happened the person crashed into another car lightly. It also took off a red wire to ECM close to the intake manifold in front which was diagnosed and repaired, the check engine light was on, the car didnt't go on cylinder 3 error code... I am 1 years working into car mechanics and it is incredibly difficult but fun... a little stressful in the dealership sometimes. Studied 1.5 years as electric/elec hybrid/combustion tech and did apprenticeship at VW, then working at JLR dealership.

No surprise that there would be some crossover regarding wiring diagrams but it makes no sense that the model production run would differ from country to country. The differences are quite subtle in the flesh between the 2. I would even argue the mk6 and 7 are the most similar-looking consecutive models by far on the outside and Ivan stays close to the car which makes it that much more difficult to pick out the differences. The instrument cluster is a major giveaway though. I think the mk6 uses the same one as mk5 or at least very close.

Crap...looking at the bonus footage...the cluster looks exactly like the one in my mk6 lol Now I'm gonna look up production years of mk6 for USA and clear that up. I'll have to look at mk5 and mk7 clusters as well to brush up on that detail. The plot thickens xD

LEDs installed in other places can cause problems too. e.g., LED replacing incandescent reverse light bulb can cause strange problems on dash. Around 2007, had a letter sorting machine with strange symptoms. Looked in log book and an emergency stop switch bulb had been found dead during a monthly PM check. I didn't think that could be the cause, but following one of the key dictums in the book of tech (look where you last chit), I checked it out. Found a LED bulb. I knew they were coming to our supply (longer lasting & used less power), but that was the first one I'd seen used. Just for the hell of it, put in a regular bulb, machine fixed. Engineering put out an alert not too long later that LEDs couldn't be used in front end of these machines, only in the output sections. Lesson learned, cherche le LED! Anyone thinking of replacing an incandescent with LED better do a lot of research on that particular vehicle and that particular LED. And keep the old bulbs just in case. I just replaced halogen 9012s on a 10 year old GM with Auxito LEDs after a lot of research. Everything I read about the Auxitos on the forums was positive. It's been a month, no issues with hyperflashing, light pattern, dash warnings, no effects on other systems.

Nice video good work🙌 i have worked as a Volkswagen technician in the last 22 years and i am not a fan of aftermarket electric parts but you can code everything on VAG cars. You can code the modul to know that there is aftermarket LED light on instead of the original lights you can also code every light in the car to go on and of with another light. You can also code the bulb error warning totally off just with a VCDS tester.

You can still use the led’s you just have to use resistors to make the ecu happy.. i had to do it to my truck when i switched all bulbs for leds.. it would act weird without the resistors like only one headlight would come on or the blinkers would go fast but so would the brake lights, all flashing and stuff. And the dome light would just stay on..

Too many people see LED lights online and think they would be neat to have in their vehicle - only they don't realize that modern vehicles aren't like old ones in which the car had no clue if the lights were on or not other than what the switch said. I ran into this with upgrading the headlights on my '15 Jeep. The first set that was "guaranteed to work" didn't, so I went and found a totally different company that specialized in the issue I was having and did their upgrade. I still get the occasional message of a light being out, but as soon as I turn it on (and it's working fine) the message goes away - a known issue that they are actively working on. I ran additional lights (on every rig I own) that are LED lights, through a relay, tied into an ignition switched fuse and left all my OEM wiring alone because I was afraid of the exact issue that Ivan ran into on this vehicle.

A couple of things, Ivan Were you sure that when diagnosing the headlight issue you were looking at the actual OEM Volkswagen connector? At the beginning of the video you mentioned that the customer installed Xenon bulbs with an adaptor. I have a feeling you were looking at the plug coming from the adaptor. That would explain the funky pin locations. I think you should've looked for the OEM connector, removed that from the adaptor, and plugged it into the headlights to see if it fixed the DRL issue. Second thing related to DRL's, in some vehicles equipped with DRL's, you can actually turn them off if the vehicle is running, in park (or neutral for manual), and the parking brake applied. As soon as the parking brake is applied, it will turn off DRL's- at least in certain vehicles. I feel like this could've been helpful in this diagnosis if Volkswagen has their DRL's setup this way.

You're supposed to change the long coding of the Central Electronics when you fit LED lamps in place of incandescent ones. I'm wondering if the permanently on lights are a a result of someone having a go at the coding without knowing fully what they are doing. I've read horror stories on forums of similar things happening with lights stuck on after botched coding and people having to take the car to the dealer to get the original coding reapplied. Aftermarket LED upgrades come in two varieties, ones that are just LED and ones that have resistors fitted to simulate the resistance of the incandescent filament. The latter are also known to cause issues with the electronics in some VAG models.

Definitely take out the led bulb and try a regular bulb with these first. I learned that plugging anything to any module wire makes them go a bit nuts. When I installed my aftermarket fog lights I had to plug to the power just behind the the headlight to make them work with the drls. I was trying to connect to the switch on my rabbi tbefore and found those wires going straight to the module which kept giving me codes and just did not like anything there. Same with the rear camera.

I had a '12 Jetta TDI. Yes if a Regen failed because you shut the car off the fans would run for a while. It has to finish the regen cycle so you have to take it on the highway and drive for a while. Once the regen is done/completed its back to normal. The wife drove the car and her work was only a few miles away so not ideal for a TDI regen cycle

Just throwing out a wild one. Don't about if this is in the us but in Europe if you push a button at the ignition switch you turn on the parking lights. With indicator you switch either to the left or the right but i noticed with a old golf if you don't select with the indicator left or right both are lichting up. Most likely you have the same system in the us but you never know. So maybe it's an ignition switch problem.

My neighbor had a Golf/GTI that was a little older than this. Water intrusion into the Central Electronics Module that rotted out one headlight control chip. A used unit coded in was easier than awaiting chip shipment. If you own a VW, clean your sunroof drains and cowl drains! Leaves had built up to the point of sending water over the firewall. I've seen similar water intrusions on Beetles.

" If you own a VW, clean your sunroof drains and cowl drains!" Great advice, but VW in certain models (I believe 2016 and later) used a plastic drain pan around the sunroof, and it cracks slightly. VW's fix _in production_ was to put pieces of adhesive tape over where the cracks develop, which after 5 years dries up and you get leaks anyway.
