It’s annoying AF! I have to explain my unique name, it’s history, my culture/heritage, why I live away from family…multiple times per day! Let’s just have a normal convo and move on, no need to get into my history!

I agree...there is always a good way to ask. And if you have been asked many times, you are always able to pick up on the people who have the 'wrong tone'.

Nothing wrong with asking, as long as it’s something you’re asking everyone and not just BIPOC people. There are plenty of white immigrants in Canada, and plenty black or Asian people who were born right here. So as long as you’re just generally curious and not making assumptions based on how people look, I see no harm in asking!

Im in the states and sadly, depending on which state you reside (esp in the southern states), asking that question and depending on who asked, you are almost sure to be placed in a box with assumptions. Its always safer to avoid that question in the states by giving a roundabout response. Unfortunately, the majority do not travel outside of America and history television is rarely watched so the exposure and knowledge is lacking with some people.

I love that question. I always say I'm from Canada in that city that's south of Detroit Mi.

I am like Omar...to me, it a gateway question to sharing more of who you are as a person. It starts a conversation. I mean, there is only so much you can say about the weather.

Why don’t people ask ‘ what’s your heritage or background’ Why do they go to ‘where are you from’ That’s can be seen as code for ‘you’re not really Canadian’. I never ask anybody ’where are you from or heritage’. I let them share the info with me if they want to. It’s not about the content of the question, it’s about the frequency. Racialized people are often asked this question everywhere and almost everyday….it can become a mental health issue.

I always ask people where they’re from. I’m curious and if they take it as racist, that’s their problem.

I saw an interesting Ted talk a few years ago and the suggestion was to ask where are you a local? It's still opens up to make a connection without implying they don't belong.

I just don't like it when white canadians say they are just canadians as if their ancestors didn't come from some place else. Indigenous canadians are the only original canadians, everyone else came from somewhere else.

As an American (from Pennsylvania)...I wish I could say I was Canadian.

I am genuinely interested in the migration of people. The why people made the move from their homeland. I used to love finding out peoples heritage because the city is so diverse but it has turned into a negative question so now im very aware of how I might be making someone feel so i avoid it typically. But i thought it was interesting that Cynthia identifies as white. I always thought she was mixed 😕. However, from personal experience, I know that race can be relative. I was always called white when i would visit family in the caribbean. It wasn’t until I was older that people would struggle with my heritage and I was even called "the dark one" when in Amsterdam.

Many tourists where I live I enjoy asking at work which country they are from they don't mind it seems.

This segment just proved toronto thinks its Canada and the only one that matters 🙄 Also, Cynthia did she like forget shes also from somewhere 🙄 I dont mind the question but it depends, what i dont like is when they dig reformatting the question multiple different times or if they would have just plainly asking "but where are you really from?" As if that question doesnt apply to them either, ive seen it happen to classmates and colleagues and its just so off-putting, so yah intentions matter I guess

I thought this was a repeat and not live because I remember this topic coming up before, so not sure why it has to be discussed over and over.

This question is a killer. Obviously no one on this panel was born "somewhere else" so you have no idea how it feels to be asked that question. What's the intention? because every immigrant hears, "I see you don't belong here and I need you to identify yourself"

What’s your background

Honestly don't understand the issue here. Canada is mostly made up of immigrants so are heritage is from other places. Let's stop assuming that someone is asking a question to be mean when they might just be making conversation. I wouldn't care if someone asked me ... I'm proud to live in Canada but my heritage is from Europe. I get that some people have ill intentions but for the most part people are just curious. Also .. don't think I've ever heard city privilege .. I guess that's a new woke term. Good grief.
