Hellraiser 3: Joey Meets The Captain

This is on here simply because Doug Bradley looks gorgeous in that uniform.

What I liked most about this movie was it brought sympathy to the character. Pinhead did have goodness left him in, in the form of Captain Spencer. I liked the entire duality of the character, and at the end how he let himself merge back with Pinhead to essentially save her.

@@mercenaryknight5419 nah. The captain and the hell priest were both halves of Pinhead, but they weren’t equal sized halves. There’s a reason ones running rampant and the other is in limbo. There was more evil in there then good. But adding that good back doesn’t get you Elliot, it just gets you pinhead.

@@kagato23 I like to think that once they merged, it wasn't the classic Pinhead of the first two movies, but a more diabolical Pinhead who wasn't quite as crazed as in Hellraiser III but was less fair and more interested in being unbound again(using the building as a permanent gateway).

Elliott is my favourite character in "Hellraiser" -- how can I resist Doug in uniform?! Yes, the film wasn't great, but I did enjoy it -- primarily because it's a film about my favourite character. However, I didn't really like Joey; I wanted Kirsty, in fact HR3 was originally written for Kirsty, but Ashley Laurence couldn't make it. :(

Thank you for this upload. I have always believed Doug Bradley is one of the most underrated actors in the business. He could have played so many other characters, but the film industry does not see actors as things that can inhabit more than just one skin. Doug is one of the few that can and does emanate a sense of something other than the habitual "ac-tor". He proved it by playing two halves of the same man. Both hero and monster in Elliot and Pinhead. I'll also never forget his Lylesburg from "Nightbreed" either. Together Doug and Clive created one "hell" of a wonder in Pinhead. Thanks for posting this insight into his character.

@@axebomber2108ONLY those individuals who he thought were "worthy". What the movies failed to show was his life BEFORE the war. The movies NEVER discussed who this Man truly was. Even "good" men have dark sides, and even "bad" men can love their countries. In the comics he went to War to avoid se*ually grooming/abusing his daughter. He was a degenerate & he not only KNEW IT, he REVELED IN IT. Instead he willingly removed himself from the Family household, and went as far away as he could, (to WAR) to spare her his evil. In the movies, he helped save at least 3 women in whom he saw characteristics he admired, and wanted to preserve. Such as his Daughter's innocence. With Kirsty, and Tiffany at least demonstrating a "unbridled strength" and an "unwillingness to just accept" the hands the fates had dealt them without fighting back... as was alluded to in the Hellraiser novel "The Toll" in his conversation with Kirsty that takes place after episode 2. PERHAPS, the vile degenerate from the comics, and the cinematic depiction of Captain Spencer aren't THAT different, in that if he "Spencer" recognized qualities he believed to be worth preserving, perhaps qualities he WISHED he possessed, he would put himself in harm's way in order to preserve/defend them. Despite, or perhaps BECAUSE of his own mental, emotional, or spiritual shortcomings or complete absences thereof... An abused individual sometimes abuses others, even though they KNOW they hated being abused themselves... PERHAPS the movie depiction of Spencer was us simply gaining the last few glimpses of those few remaining remnants of humanity, without giving us the CONTEXT or perspective as to WHY he so selflessly defended/saved the characters that he did. I truly enjoyed the Hellraiser novels, movies, and comics. I hope that Barker's other creations the "Tortured Souls" finally has a story written about them, so we can better understand how they fit into Hell's pantheon, so as to continue to explore the lore of this "Barkerverse". 🙂✌

We learn a great deal more about Elliott Spencer/Pinhead and I liked the duality this film brought to him, making him much more of a layered character. Joey is my favorite character of the series too and a big part of the reason I like this entry so much, really unfortunate she never returned for another installment. Doug Bradley isn't nearly as good at playing Spencer as he is at playing Pinhead. The scene in Hellraiser II where Pinhead reverted to Spencer before Channard killed him was my favourite in the series. I think Spencer actually reclaimed his humanity then BEFORE he died, which is why his ghost is free and the immortal demon acts on its own.

Well, the original ending of "Hellbound" was Julia coming out as QUEEN of Hell/Labyrinth; that was Clive Barker's and Tony Randel's intention. (And, no, I don't believe it was Barker's intention for an entire franchise; he simply wanted to make a movie of his work that was good and scary.) Instead, we have the Pillar of Souls due to the popularity of Pinhead. But, yes, I agree that anything "Hellraiser" envolves the box (any the boxes really), the cenobites, and the mythos. :D

Well, understand that the films have been passed to hand and hand. If Clive Barker did the entire franchise, it would have turned out different, but I'll answer this the best I can: Elliott never really "died" in a true since as Pinhead. According to the comics, Elliott was selected to be a host of one of the spiritial, parasitic Leviathan's children, Xipe Totec (best-known as the Aztec God of Life-Death-Rebirth), as a result became Pinhead. In HR2, Channard removed Xipe Totec, thus became only Elliott. Channard killed the Elliott (who, at heart, is a good man that did some "evil" things) and his soul went to Limbo. His body, however, was left to Xipe Totec. Without Elliott (whose Pinhead's conscious of a sorts), Xipe Totec (aka: Unbound Pinhead) went on a rampage! Xipe doesn't want to sent back to Hell; he wants to retain his freedom, thus destory the Box. This is a stupid idea actually. (cont.)

    1. Doug is a fine actor who deserved and deserves more opportunities. 2. The idea of Pinhead having an evil and a good side, or a human and demonic side, is a fundamental misunderstanding of the entire Barker cosmos. If Barker's fantasy metaphysics has one core belief, it is the rejection of all dichotomies such as good and evil, male and female, human and other, mind and body. It's all a continuum for him; there are no divisions, only degrees. The cenobites are not 'evil' they are just grossly excessive by human standards. This idea, that there is no two, but only one, is such a difficult idea for most people to accept that whole civilizations have risen an fallen without one person noticing it. Judeo Christianity is utterly wrong about this: only the Zen masters have come close to perceiving the actual fabric of reality as it sees itself through human mind, which is itself.
