I loved the way they approached the Lament Configuration in this version. Instead of just being a basic puzzle box, it's a full-on Rubik's device with several different configurations and shapes.

And being a bit more complex than just "solve the box, summon the cenobites". Even if the idea did feel kinda like Dragonball, except instead of gathering the 7 balls to summon a god and make a wish you just slice a bunch of people with it :P

While I didn’t mind the new lament configuration design, the blade popping out and needing to stab someone seemed like a flawed and silly design decision on both the cenobites, and the filmmakers part(in universe and out, respectively). This was evident by the main protagonist avoiding it by accident. As Pinhead said in the second film, “It is not hands that call us, but desire.”

It's creepy in its own way. The mystery of the original box makes it way more scary although the new box is very thought provoking and I love it.

I have a special dislike for this type of darkness. It looks like there's smoke or something; it's as if the lighting was a digital effect, as opposed to darkly lit scenes with deep shadows and high contrast which can be very atmospheric. The darkness in this film seems to have no richness or contrast. I assume it's a filter of some kind added in post because I see this look in many films nowadays. If you compare it to the look of a film like Dracula (Francis-Ford Copula) it just looks like crap.

I agree. While most horror remakes of classic franchises end up feeling empty, I felt that this breathed some new life into a long Dead series. There was never any replacing Doug Bradley, but this new Pinhead hell priest works her own kind of magic. Along with decent performances from a somewhat solid cast even though some of them were just there to fill body count, and the impressive new centubite designs, this is definitely a much welcomed entry into the saga. @faz1483

Top 5 doesn't exactly say much for this franchise :)
Not watching till I see the movie but love the SNOB being a part of the 2020s.
I love that they answered a few "what if" questions like "What would happen if the cenobites showed up and the summoner just did a runner instead of standing there frozen with horrified awe?" and "From where do the cenobites appear if the box is opened outside?" and "Where do they come from if the summoner is in a moving car?". Not all of the answers are super-interesting, but I like that they went for them. Now just show us what happens if someone solves the box on a crowded airplane. Maybe in the sequel...
Some spoilers, but here's my quickie review: Pros: -Faithful to the mythology and referenced the original films. I hate it when remakes jettison things that worked, so I was glad this wasn't a complete overhaul. The box was perfection, and in its basic form it is exactly as it first (last, and always) appeared. I loved that no one reinvented the "bell" sound effect when the Cenobites appear. We see the labyrinthine version of Hell from Hellbound rather than breaking continuity by attempting a radically different take on what has come before. Hearing Christopher Young's orchestral themes during the climax was completely appropriate because, again, you can't improve upon perfection. -Extends the concept of the box, both physically and what it conferred. Admittedly, I liked it more when the box configurations were a little more nebulous than each someone representing that you "leveled up," but it was visually interesting. The idea of the box being a magic lamp (or Monkey's Paw) with the Cenobites as genie granting ironic gifts was something new and satisfying, but we should have seen more than two examples of the Cenobites' offerings by the end of the film. -Effective use of CGI. Instead of the walls opening the gates to Hell, now the ceilings or ground could reconfigure. The window in the ceiling was wonderfully used as well. I can imagine a lot of places where CGI could have been over-extended to make this film more action-oriented, and it would have lessened the personal connection, so I am impressed with the restraint shown here. Cons: -Too much we've seen before. Like he said, rich-guy-in-mansion-dedicated-to-Hellraiser was in "Hellworld" (with some inspiration from headlines by having Menaker playing a version of Ghislaine Maxwell trafficking boys for Voight as Epstein). Teenage girl as protagonist? Kirsty was the core of the first three. Villain becomes a Cenobite? Yep, except he was called Dr. Channard last time that happened. -Not enough story to justify its runtime because it's basically just one plot. The original films were layered: The first was about a love triangle that goes to hell when Frank come back, and the Cenobites were a very cinematic means to an end. People forget that they were not the plot. The second film had Dr. Channard (and his asylum, Tiffany, etc.) on top of the saga of Julia with Frank in Hell. The third had Pinhead's backstory dovetail into the main (albeit disappointing) story. The fourth, though badly botched by studio interference, has a centuries-spanning trilogy of stories. In this film we follow the teenage girl again, but there's really only one story: Voight and the box. She gets all the character development; he gets almost nothing. That disproportionate emphasis means we don't care about him the way we did, say, Julia. He never seems dangerous enough to fear or deep enough to empathize for the predicament he put himself into. -Disappointing third act. The film was very mysterious and kept moving (e.g., it was briefly a crime caper, missing persons case for the brother, then for the rich weirdo), but it really stalled once they got trapped in the house. In the midst of things it completely lost momentum and never really recovered. Cenobites are literally standing around (and one is pinned between things). The original film did far more with far less house or anything else! Meh: -The Cenobites. Some people are raving about them, but longtime Hellraiser fans have to admit that this film really didn't take the concept anywhere new. They were just re-treads of the originals. The Priest(ess) was still Pinhead but more feminine (e.g., piercings that came from Grandma's cookie tin of sewing supplies rather than a construction site). The Asphyx was the eyeless version of Chatterer for those who enjoy a latex version of auto-erotic asphyxiation (and there was also the actual updated Chatterer who wasn't radically different than in the original). The Gasp was just Angelique from "Bloodline," though I think the latter was far better design work that looked delicate and tortuous. I had hoped for something better or at least different, and was let down. The bad sequels and even the comic books in the '90s had more original designs at times. Bottom line: I'd recommend it for fans, but only as an extension of the original. It is not bad but is definitely not an improvement. For those who haven't seen any of the films, the first two cannot be beat. And like the video concludes, even the 3rd and 4th are more original and more entertaining in some ways. This film treated the material with reverence at the expense. But maybe they should have kept pushing things even if that risked pushing things too far. I'm more excited at the prospect of sequels than of seeing this again.
The first one shocked the audience, and it was more adult, than A Nightmare on Elm street

Didn’t expect a review this soon.
I really enjoyed this Hellraiser reboot. Jamie Clayton hit it out of the park as Pinhead
They could always do a "Pinhead VS Freddy Krueger" movie. Just sayin. It isn't an awful movie, and like you said, it works as a sequel. There's no reason there can't be multiple Pinheads in the cenobyte ranks, and the changes in the Box could have been in place, just never triggered in the earlier movies. The "When you wish upon a box" aspect is interesting, and even allows for a way to survive the whole ordeal, and gives the Lament Configuration a real REASON to have that name.
I could be wrong because Hellraiser isn’t my most favorite film franchise but I felt this film introduced lore to the cenobites and the lament configuration that wasn’t as consistently explored since at a point the cenobites and the lament configuration were shoehorned into previously unrelated scripts to Hellraiser.
The main gripe I have you addressed. I watched this film at night, and the movie was still way too dark. I could barely see what was going on for a good portion of the movie. I appreciated the exposition of the different box forms....just couldn't get past how under-lighted most of the movie was.
Loved this movie. A great restart to a new franchise. Just needs to be more….dirty, violent, and disgustingly gory.
"The twist is that it was inside the box" nah, that was already taken by one of the more fun Hellraisers.
Okay, I want to see Pinhead in an episode of the Goldbergs.
Maybe it's the snob in me, but the fold lines in those posters are giving me hellish sensations.
My final thoughts on the movie was eh. I liked the moments where the cenobites were seeping into our world as it had great atmosphere and was creepy and the parts where there was gore was pretty good. Though that's really all the positives I have. The human characters were ether bland or unlikable. I was not a fan of the cenobites naked designs and I think they would be better if they had some type of outfit like the OG cenobites. Also while this new pinhead is ok the OG is still better as his voice felt way more terrifying and commanding.

I liked it. I could rewatch the first installment over and over. One time was enough, but it left an impression which means it outdid my expectations.
I really believe that the front half of this movie *intentionally* apes the sequels as a false premise to really sell the ending. The movie fits along side the shitty sequels a little too well, right up until it doesn't. Once you get into that back half the twist actually feels earned and meaningful because the entire tone and quality of the film turns on a dime and 180's into a legitimately good hellraiser movie. Oh, and something the snob didnt mention that i thought he would. The twist that main girl and voight were both wrong about the cenobites only torturing them and not actually granting their desires was a really good twist of the knife for an ending. Pinhead earnestly addresses voight's disappointment with his gift and fixes it by turning him into a cenobite. We even see him smile at the end, happy to be so powerful. The implication being that had main girl tried to get her brother back, she very well may have gotten him back.

Sacrifice people in order to get a wish...is nothing like what Hellraiser was ever about. This film is no better than many other sequels in this franchise, such as Pinhead being a person's moral judge, etc. The original story by Clive Barker hinted at many different variations of pain and pleasure that these explorers of experience have to offer. We only saw the Cenobites via Frank Cotton's experience in that story. Sadly, instead of genuinely doing something new yet also tied to Clive's tale, this new movie decided that Cenobites need to be genies that grant wishes.

Also it was just nice to see the puzzle box actually being treated like a puzzle box.

I recognized her from Sense 8 on Netflix, she was great in that 👍
I'm a newbie to the Hellraiser series and definitely became more intrigued after watching this. The gore is still a bit much for me but I appreciate the mysticism of the lore, very Lovecraftian
You know what I’m gonna start watching the hellraiser movies I’m gonna give ‘em a chance.
It was safe. Damn it!!!!!!!!!!
It’s funny you mentioned James Whale, I actually just watched the movie about him last night, Gods and Monsters.
