Rail's ARRIVAL was released at the end of 1980 on Dynasty Records, their own label. Having already proven themselves on a national tour without a record, RAIL hit the road again and subsequently sold over 200,000 copies of ARRIVAL, watching as their song "Hello" was added to radio playlists all over the Pacific Northwest. The high water mark for RAIL came in 1983 when their personal manager Maria Cooper submitted a video of "Hello" (against the band's wishes) for an MTV contest called the "Basement Tapes". Unsigned rock groups would compete with their videos with viewers calling in to vote on their favorite. RAIL's reservations about being thrust into the cattle call quickly evaporated when out of 40,000 videos submitted worldwide, "Hello" wins the preliminary rounds and eventually the Grand Prize of a recording contract with EMI Records.

I was fortunate enough to see these guys perform live through the years here in Seattle. You have to see their cover of Rush's "Working Man" video. They nail it. They all have amazing talent. -Gary
I remember they'd open the show with HELLO, and everyone was on board as soon as that first line was sung. Amazing fun...
Rail rocked the Northwest with a vengeance! I saw them several times. Kelly was an incredible drummer, he was an animal! Terry James Young (bass and vocals)was also dynamic and impressive live. Who can forget the furry boots!
These guys used to play at Mr. Luckys in Denver when i worked there. no one compared to them... amazing!!! they were also the best behaved band... lol!! we even went to visit them once in Seattle, really nice guys... never pulled that one before but it was fun. great talent!!!
I love them. hung out with them in washington. in the early 80's awesome people and music. Love and miss those days!!!!
This was really Rail's flagship song. Very Catchy and a great show opener that invited everyone into enjoy the show. We had the opportunity to warm up for these guys back in the day out in Cashmere WA at the fairgrounds. They worked our azzes off setting up their BIG par lights n show. A ton of work but a lot of fun n great memories. We got RAIL T shirts and a piece of the action. The lights blew up but they kept pounding it out like pros. Great Band.
I saw Rail several times in '80, '81 and '82 in the Seattle/Tacoma area! The regularly appeared at Bronco Billy's in Federal Way, WA and at The Back 40 in Tacoma, WA. Seriously, I could not get enough of them. Such a high energy and fun band!!! In 1988 I started vocal training with David Kyle in Seattle only to find out that Terry Young had been training with him for years and was scheduled just before my appointments!!!! OMG!!! I brought my album and next lesson and Terry signed it.
The band is "RAIL" from Bellevue, Washington. The song is "HELLO" from their first album after winning MTV's Basement Tapes in 1982. Really a good group of guys. Too bad they couldn't absorb the Corporate Music demands upon them and really take over the scene. They've remained what they always were: great musicians who love to play & entertain.
I saw rail at the Memorial Stadium in Seattle at Summer Jam 1980. Back then, Summer Jam was a rock show sort of like Ozzfest is now. Rail opened and were followed by Blue Oyster Cult, Molley Hatchet and Black Sabbath (Ozzy rocked!). Probably in the top 2 or 3 coolest concerts I ever went to...good times.
Oh my gosh RAIL!!! how wonderful it is to find you again this takes me back to the days when you played at the 121 , or Gentle Bens in Boise, y,all would remember us if you saw again love you guys!!1
This song is still in regular rotation on my ipod. I wish they had kept writing like this.
I remember moving to Marysville Washington from Montana, and hearing them in 82 or 83 brings back memories, they seemed like they were going to take off.
I remember calling and voting for the like 50 times on that MTV Basement tapes contest. I thought that guy had the coolest voice ever!
Seen Rail maybe more then 100 times....extremely talented band and even nicer bunch of guy's. Please don't stop performing in the Seattle Washington area. Hope to see you in 2014.
They had a song called "Sleeping With the Enemy" that for the life of me, I haven't been able to find! Great song, what I can remember of it. Yes, it came out before that Julia Roberts movie.
cool song, great junior high school song too
Just saw them here in Spokane at Pig Out In The Park last night. They were excellent!
I remember that guitar player they had at the beginning.. Black Bart. He was amazing.
Cool tune! Excellent voice!
Saw these cats in 82 or 83, pure cheese, but they kicked ass!
I seen Rail at the capitol theater in yakima wa. in the 80's they opened for Joan Jett and kick her ass,, the crowd screamed for rail the whole time,,,,awesome!!!!
i remember seeing them at the lynnwood rollaway! awesome concert!
En los 80's fueron apadrinados por MTV y esta banda de Seattle calo muy profundo en una islita del caribe llamada Puerto Rico. Tocaron junto a Saga, Heart, Cheap Trick, Dokken, Blue Oyster Cult, Pat Travels y The Producers.
Ya know what? I don't think I've ever seen this before. I remember seeing 1-2-3-4 and Fantasy on MTV back in the day (but could never remember the name of the band), but this song I think this one passed me by. Kinda neat to finally see this!
they had Ronnie Montrose in the band for awhile in the mid 80s, killer concert
Best Seattle band EVER!!
Sweet Canadian Mullet, too~~~
saw them live - killer show - drummer was breaking ludwig 9000 sticks left and right
This woulda been a good day, eh? Crap, I still have this on LP! Where's the time gone?
Holy crap! I was at the filming of this video! Juanita HS gym... lmfao
Dunno if this ha been mentioned already, but: Mtv actually had a nationwide phone-in "Battle of the Video Bands" (Basement Tapes), and this tune won.
Last time I talked to Baldwin he didn't ever remember playing that A20v.
Rail did a 47 date tour with Van Halen back in the day. Never heard of them or knew they toured with VH until yesterday(November 25, 2017). Read Pete Blecha's book "Sonic Boom". Cheers!
And RAIL has the coolest logo! Jman
This KILLS IT!! Who was the editor? The aggressive camera work blows my mind!!
they are coming back
Hello was a good song from Rail. But the song was only 2 minutes long. But it got them a recording contract with EMI. I will let you know I have this album on CD.Hard to believe right?

Aw, man - he's had those boots laughed at for 34 years now. "What's your one regret?" "Those boots. I don't know what I was thinking."

I suspect he was influenced by David Lee Roth but really only David himself can get away with wearing stuff like that.

Ya see 'em all the time, North of the border, eh? ;-)
This just makes me wanna grow my hair out again... And take Martha Quinn to dinner...ya, that's it!!!
I remember when this video debuted on Basement tape. My whole band was watching and we were all "Oh wow a chick bass player", which was rare back then. But a little bit later one band mate said, "She sure don't have no tits". Then we started looking closer and realized it was a dude.
Never ever heard of this band when growing up. Shame.
The real Chucky

Wow, Culprit. Great to see a comment that mentions them. My uncle was their manager. I saw them live a couple of times too.
Gotta love Martha Quinn's lesbian haircut.
Thank God Nirvana killed these guys off!
The Gaydar went OFF right at the 14 second mark......pure cheese, Rail should've renamed themselves Train, they might of had more success
