Helle - The Knife's Journey

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Helle - The Knife's Journey documents the making and crafting of Helle knives at their factory in Holmedal, Norway. Helle knives are hand made by craftsmen and can involve up to 45 manual steps to complete. This video documents Helle's use of wood and steel, the assembly, shaping, polishing and packaging of their knives, as well as the making and sewing of sheaths. Helle's knives are made to be used in the woods for hunting, or for bushcraft, on the ocean for fishing, around the farm, or when camping or hiking. Helle - The Knife's Journey tells the story of the land, people, and processes involved in making these beautiful and functional knives.
Young & MacKenzie Distribution is the exclusive distributor of Helle knives in Canada. Visit their website at www.youngandmackenzie.ca/helle for a full list of retailers across Canada.

    With what? The grinding of the blade? Many other knife companies punch their blades out and and do their own handles. Thats handmade tradition? Lol

    That’s exactly what I was thinking. There wasn’t a single young person in that factory (as far as I could see) that would be my dream come true to work in that factory. Any spare time I would craft my own blade using the skills I learn.

    I have a helle sigmund, same as in the video. My buddies all like using it when we're cleaning fish and deer. 3 of my buddies bought helle knives after using mine. Lot of farm boys around here are putting there buck knives away in favor of helle. Back to our roots, as most of us here in Northern Wisconsin are of norwegian stock.

    Hi IsobarikFX...I am buying one of the two knives you mentioned above this week. If you only had one which one of the helle's do you prefer. I am leaning towards the Utvaer because it can be used with a fero rod...but the Temagami looks really good as well. I have medium sized hands if that makes a difference. And for use I will do a bit of everything with the knife. I already own a Helle Viking that I really like. Thanks in advance

  • @isobarikFX

    @isobarikFX

    8 жыл бұрын

    I'm partial to the Temagami because of Helle"s "tripple lamination" process (just like the Viking) and because it was designed by my fellow Canadian Les Stroud. I use a ferro rod with a striker, so the knife doesn't come into play for that purpose. The Ultvaer is slightly more robust and a beautifully balanced full tang knife. It doesn't hold and edge quite like the Temagami but that sharpened pommel is really handy for scraping birch bark for tinder. Which ever knife you choose Peter you will be satisfied with it I'm sure. I'm also looking to purchase the "GT" later this year. I've heard excellent things about it. Take care and enjoy!

  • @PeterLariviere1

    Thanks...maybe I will go with the Temagami and just have a striker for the fero rod like you do....also a Canuk. • @VahidCullsberg

    @VahidCullsberg

    Hi, there are tons and tons of different traditional Scandinavian knives. What you call sami knives is not specific to Finland. The Sami people exist throughout Scandinavia and parts of Russia. There are so many different Sami ethnicities, and they don't all manifacture their knives in one common way. There are as many knife types and builds as there are tastes and natural materials. I used to photo document traditional artifacts at the Ajjte museum in Jokkmokk, Swedish lapland. Knives being amongst them. Those Helle knives in this video are not handmade as you can see. They are spitted out by machines by the thousands. Those workers there today mostly serve to take the blade from one machine to the next. With that said, I don't mean that it is bad quality. But these knives are definitely not handmade in the traditional way. Also, there are countless of non-sami traditional knives in Scandinavia as well. Most likely more so than Sami knives.

    Wouldn't you agree that for the size and purpose of these knives, individual forging would not be feasible, even wasteful? They would cost so much more and Helle would not be able to produce very many of them. Perhaps they wouldn't have survived as long as they have if they went that way? There is no shortage of custom knifemakers today. I commend them for continuing the quality and tradition they started with.

    Scandinavian style is to use their knives as a utility knife, and use a small forest axe for chopping. The rat tail tang of quality Scandinavian knives is just fine since they use a decent steel which is a good balance between resisting bending, while also not being so brittle it'll shatter. If you use your knife every day but don't mistreat it, you'll have no problem. Just to be safe though, I bought the Helle Utvær, full tang but beautiful birch scales on the sides.
