Helldivers 2 was advertised too successfully

Ойындар

Helldivers 2 might be one of the best co-op shooters of all time. Helldivers 2 gameplay consists of satisfying gunplay, funny lore, and servers at capacity please wait. Because the Helldivers 2 trailers were simply too good. They weren't even gameplay trailers, they were cinematics but they were hilarious and the tone of the game overall is perfect. I didn't play Helldivers 1, third person shooters aren't my jam, but the marketing team for Helldivers 2 was cookin, and I love Helldivers now... when I make it through the server wait time.

So they originally had a server cap of about 260k, that got immediately filled so they were able to raise it to 380k, that too got filled. Some context, the Steam concurrent player count was that high at one point and that's not even taking PS5 players into account. And just now they've been able to raise it to 700k. All this to say Arrowhead's previous highest concurrent player count was like, 12k lol. Just no way they could've anticipated this level of success, literally unthinkable.

As a salesmen if you advertise and partner with massive companies you should expect success especially when you advertise the way arrowhead did Not planning for success is exactly how you experience failure Or breed a brain dead toxic ass community that praises a game that released in a worse state then many pre alphas But hey this was acceptable if this was the new cod you guys totally wouldn’t be throwing massive fits on Reddit

The crazy thing is they did very little advertising for this game at all. They had a trailer but didn't have any advertisement campaign pushing the game. Instead, after the first weekend of folks playing, the power of word of mouth made this game beyond popular. Just given the math, say the first weekend you played, then got three other friends to get the game for week 2, you're tripling player count just by asking friends to play. They also implemented a afk timer and suddenly the servers are doing a lot better now that they aren't full of folks afking all day at work

Exactly! I hadn’t even heard of this game or it’s predecessor until release, when the intro cutscene got recommended on YT. Now, it’s probably my favorite game in a whole lot of years, and it’s not just another reluctant choice of “which game was the least shit?” HD2 is legitimately a *good* game with *good* devs who mean well and enjoy their creation. They’re literally fixing account bugs one at a time through a ticket system until the full team can finish work on server-wide solutions in the next update.

Just an FYI, The servers released with 100k per platform. It was beyond undersized for what they got, BUT to be clear their previous game(the first Helldivers) had a peak player count of under 7k. 100k at the time had to have been looking like overkill. That weekend in under 48 hours via some black fucking magic they pushed it up to 280k per platform. I am a DBA and I have no fuckin clue how they pulled that shit out of their ass. Over the next week and some change they moved it to 300k then 400k and then just recently 700ish thousand. I forgot the final stat exactly but it was finally enough to survive the hype train they were unironically suffering from. Along with that they finally implemented an auto kick system to deal with the people AFK camping server spots like assholes(there was roughly 100k people kicked from this system on its release). Again before release there was no way you would predict even having a need for that. Also god bless them they are doing all of this on an ancient swedish(i think) game engine that you genuinely can't even get anymore. There was no way for sony or anyone else to just throw bodies at the problem. Anyways all that to say that is why there are so many different numbers as to what the capacity was. They were actively working 16 hour shifts for multiple weeks and weekends trying to get their servers up to snuff, and it shows from how many times the kept pushing updates and server cap increases.

I’m the same way. I’ve had the Witcher 3 recommended to me a trillion times but the camera position kills me. I like two third person perspectives in games. Either over the shoulder Resident Evil style, or zoomed out far enough to see me whole character. If it’s somewhere in the middle of those two it kills me. I realize the Witcher’s camera zooms out in combat but when you’re exploring around and Geralt is right in the middle of the screen it bugs me. Helldivers perspective looks fine. Zoomed out until you aim then it goes over the shoulder.

It's wild to me just how much this game blew up. I play games almost every day, and I never saw a single advertisement for this game, except seeing the name on the PlayStation store a couple times. If my friends hadn't played the first one, I genuinely wouldn't have even heard of it till the day it came out. I'm glad this game did blow up the way it did though. Just like what Baldur's Gate 3 did. It's proving to the world what a game with actual drive, and talent, and passion behind it can achieve

Love the fact that one of this games best mechanics/features is so similar to the old community wide challenges games used to do (more frequently at least). For example, if people remember the challenger for BO3 where however many million kills or whatever had to be reached by the community in total, giving free weapon crates.

"If you aren't careful, you can grow yourself out of business." Hooh boy , story time. Nobody's going to notice this comment on a month-old habie video, but this reminded me of something in my childhood. If you lived in Southern/Midwestern Idaho about 20 years ago, there was a small department store called Kings. They sold various items locally as a chain in a few areas in the state, but for me my favorite part was that their stores always had a basement that was a combination hobby and toy aisle, where they sold various models, toy vehicles, trains, collectible items, you name it they probably had something like it there. It was one of my favorite places to go as a little kid whenever my folks were looking to get some tools or something for around the farm. They were also very successful - successful enough that they decided to branch out and spread their business. Which they did. Which bankrupted them. Apparently they were doing well enough that they needed to expand to match customer demand, but hit that sweet spot where they expanded and suddenly overextended their ability to cater to their customers (or at least something along those lines). Long and the short, within a few years after attempting that expand they went out of business. The last King's building got torn down about a decade or so ago and the lot is still barren and empty down the highway in a small town called Payette, and it has left a void in my childhood soul that will never be filled again. Yeah, so, that was storytime with Kerian, hope you liked it.

Not had any problems finding a game (On PS5) and only experienced one toxic player so far, who was happily killing me also happily wasting lives to respawn me again just to kill me, then when I shot him back I got kicked. So apart from that one idiot the game has been amazing fun and very enjoyable.
