Hellcat Swapped Plymouth Prowler
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The current feature on AutoHunter Cinema is this 1999 Plymouth Prowler which has had its V6 swapped out for a 707-horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V8 from a Dodge Hellcat. Mopar folks, cover your ears and close your eyes as the Hemi is paired with a GM TH400 automatic transmission. A custom driveshaft pushes power to the Strange Engineering differential and Currie 9-inch rear. This is the Prowler that we should have had from the beginning! This neo-hot rod also features custom side-exit exhausts with MagnaFlow mufflers, four-wheel Wilwood disc brakes and GPS speedometer. Makes no sense to have a hot rod without some customizing, so this Prowler Purple Prowler has been upgraded with Viper Products air extractors (inspired by those on the hood of Vipers) and deleted front bumper.

Not to be a jerk… Anybody that follows car stuff knows this Somehow Chrysler didn’t know it’d be a huge flop that it didn’t have a v8, or even a supercharger or turbo v6 at least to compensate for the missing cylinders. 🤷♂️

To say the 3.5 V6 was a bit of a disappointment in the Prowler is a massive understatement.

At 2800 lbs and 235hp it's not exactly slow for the time. 6 second 1/4 mile is ok. Not a Corvette but not as lame as people make it out to be. Wonder if a turbo would wake it up.

Had 3.5 in an old 2001 300m, thing was surprisingly quick for a retirement community boat. Pain in the ass to work on because they made sure there wasn't an inch of room under the hood.

Well, in all fairness the V8 didn't really fit in it, as evidenced by the hole in the hood. What else had to be cut out that might have made this not production ready or a safety hazard? They totally could have put a V8 in it, but not as it was produced.

A little history from someone who truly knows these cars: I was fortunate (enough) to be a Prowler Specialist when they were being built. The dealerships that were allocated the car(s) had to meet certain criteria. One was to have a 5-Star status with the manufacturer and clients for both sales and service. The other is to have a trained technician on the car, who would be the only tech "allowed" to service it/them. So... They weren't "Chrysler's biggest failure", maybe just in the eyes of other people, perhaps that didn't have the background or understanding of what Chrysler was *intentionally* doing with the car. It was originally supposed to be a $20, 000-$30,000 roadster. As the project gained traction, the expense of the vehicles also climbed. Chrysler would put teaser ads and printed materials out to the general public to check on potential interest for sales. Dealership MSRP was $40,000. The actual price fluctuated, well over double at times. Dealership price gouging at its finest. The demand was not very high, but people were buying them regardless. It is a rare sight to see one on the road because most people that bought them put them away immediately, only driving them to keep things rolling. In training, the instructor advised us that the first to 1997 Prowlers sold (Only available in Prowler Purple) went for $125,000 and $75,000. Obviously much higher than the sticker price of $40,000. Definitely a collector's car and considered to be quite rare. The most rare is the two-tone silver and black, which only 163 were built. Inca Gold was the most sought-after color, of which 616 were built. Anyway, moving on to what made the car different, or special: They were all completely hand built. Every nut, bolt, rivet, fastener and component, was built and assembled by human hands. And training, which lasted 3 days, we disassembled the major components of the vehicle and then reassembled it. They were really quite cool. So the idea behind the build was to have a modern "hot rod" with all of the latest technology for the time. Why a V6? Because the first generation 3.5L was putting out more power than the 360 V8 Magnum for 1997. The redesign of the 3.5L"HO" added a few extra horsepower. It was intentionally designed for use with the the V6, using what was then current LH body components. Chrysler Concord, Eagle Vision and Dodge Intrepid engines, transmissions, electronics and emissions were part of the foundation for the Prowler. The transmission set in the rear and the engine was up front, they were pretty well balanced for having such radically different size tires. They handled extremely well, much like a professional go-kart. Visibility was terrible, all around. He had to remember that there was eight feet of vehicle in front of you driving it around. Anyway, to try to keep this short, There was a prototype vehicle called the Howler, which had the then "new" 4.7L as it's power plant. That only added 15 horsepower to the car, but also added weight. The 3.5 HO was entirely aluminum whereas the 4.7 had a cast block with aluminum heads. It is irrelevant, because the car was a prototype only. But yeah, they are cool cars to drive and to look at, and came from a time when Americans were building them with their actual hands. I'm not sure if the limited numbers make it a failure, I would own one and drive the shit out of it today. Of course having an LH transmission, I would make sure I have an overhaul kit ready to go. 😂🤘🏻 Hope you guys enjoyed that tidbit. I still have the books from the class and one of them has all of the detailed specifications, right down to the body gap measurements. Pretty cool...

Crazy how the underneath looked like it was not a production car. Riveting panels. These were notorious for suspension issues. Still one of the coolest looking car made. A bold move. Need a video of this driving and sound.
I think it looks far more like a '34 Plymouth than a '32 Ford from both ends, especially the grille. Even a '34 Olds 2 door coupe looks more like it than a '32 Ford. If you had said a '36 Ford, I'd agree... the grille is much closer in shape and stance to a '36 Ford than the upright and nearly flat one from a '32. The rear still looks more like a '34 Plymouth though. The list of details in the video's description is better than what's in the video. Edit: Either way, very cool machine that I'd absolutely love to have. With that engine and those meats, I'd love to see what this can do in the 1/4 mile!
3:06 - LOL! All Plymouth Prowlers were convertible Roadsters.
I don't care. Stock V6 or swapped to a V8 or V10.. The Prowler is just ultra 'yum' to me. I had the pleasure of driving one in the early 00's. It was soooooo flash. Everyone stops to gape at it like a Lambo or Ferrari. It wasn't appreciated in it's time as a 'Hot Rod' but........ Now we are Hot Rodding it... Neat Eh? It might not be fast in stock form but roll into a car meet and you are arriving in a true exotic.

The stock powertrain never even came close to living up to the promise of that gorgeous body (after removing the front bumpers). The car impressed people who don't know much about cars, while everyone else snickered at its 253 hp "minivan engine" with automatic trans: a "poser" guaranteed to be a sales failure. What a shame. Chrysler did get it right, later, with the (much more expensive, of course) Viper.
Would of liked to have seen a hood-scoop. It now is asymmetrical and directs the eye to an otherwise balanced focus to the junk protruding out the single largest surface. It's not too late--could be an add-on, I see gloss black with subtle badging, instead of the "cheap" decal of the Hellcat on the fender.
I loved the look of this car when I first saw it. Total 50's/60's hot rod vibe.
Car so cool the guy reviewing couldnt quit clapping. Once you notice cant un notice
Easily the coolest prowler ever!
Always loved these. Just so cool and still amazed they built it at all. Also tac in the cockpit was a factory piece and they did some major venting on the sides of the engine bay you didn't mention. Obviously to let heat out but were a huge difference. Think I would put a scoop on the hood to cover the blower and help with ventilating out the sides
man that car was beautiful you did an amazing job in this video

Love how his voice gets much more monotone and low 3:08 when he is forced to admit this 700HP beast is an automatic... lol
Blows my mind that someone thought it a good idea to create such a wildly unusual enthusiast-only car and then not even offer a manual
Plymouth: “That’s actually a good idea” Also Plymouth: “nah”
Great work
I want to know what they did to the chassis to keep it from twisting like a pretzel with all that power.

That car brings up the question "So how'd he die?!
I’d like to know the information for the shop that did this work. I’d like to do this with my silver 2001 prowler.
I remember doing a pre-order on the prowler thinking that i was going to get a hemi. I immediately canceled my order once i realized that i was getting a honda Civic in a hotrod body
I hope they beefed up that transmission and bigger brakes Awesome build.
the engine the Prowler should have gotten back in 1999 !!! =)
I knew someone would build it
Just awesome car..!!🤟
love the hellcat motor in this! But I got to ask ,was the blower painted with a paint brush?
This is what the prowler should have been. It'd still be in production
The actual car chip was building that was the foundation for the prowler was the Hemisphere. It was a hot rod inspired coupe with a mid mounted gen 2 hemi concept, I didn't know it was for a design contest as you mention, I noticed the cat in some of the Foose specials done on the TLC channel (not overhaulin, different shows). Now yes the 3.5l is not what we'd call a hot rod engine, But having owned one for a year now (2006 dodge Magnum) it's no slouch. that said, i agree a true hot rod needs a V8
Finally it’s right!!! Seriously I’ve always dreamed of doing this every since they stated swapping hell cat engines . Wish we could see it on a track against some known fast cars
They should call it the "Howler"
Imagine how these wouldve beenntrue collectors cars by now and worth so much had they came with at least a hemi back then
How much for the prowler hell cat

Amazing concept vehicle, but... mind that panel gap!
After watching hoovies garage on his performance upgrades to 300hp the v6 is okay
ive always liked the prowler, its problem was that pos v6
The Prowler was one of those cars that hit all the marks except for the single most important one... The freaking engine! Even Chip Foose said it was "supposed" to have a V-8 but some pencil pusher at Chrysler thought a V6 would be more "economic and environmentally friendly"
The 3.6 v-6 in the prowler really came from the LH cab forward Chrysler/dodge/eagle cars. Those were front wheel drive. So they made a torque tube and stuck the transmission in the rear of the prowler to make it rear drive....but WHERE is the tranny stuffed in that hellcat Prowler???
