Hellboy - What's the Difference?

Correction: Hellboy came out in 2004, not in 2006. Our bads!
Correction 2: This is Von Krupt, not Von Klempt.
In the age of reboots, nothing is safe, even Hellboy. Before we get into the weeds of the differences between the two buff devil men, we're here to ask, "What's the difference between Mike Mignola's graphic novel and Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy?"

Despite the visual accuracy of the film I think del Toro failed to transmit the "spirit", as you say, of the comic, in the first Hellboy film there are plenty of errors protraying the characters and more than a handfull of problems in the script. The FBI agent has more time on screen than Abe and it is insufferable, Hellboy itself is very bad written in the movie, way too childish for a near 50 year old man, fuck that scene with the kid, the cookies and the milk on the rooftop where the kid advices him is the worst "character development" moment I ever seen

In the comics the public are aware of Hellboy, but his adventures often take place in hidden, ancient temples and strange forrests. Whereas, in the Del Toro movies Hellboy's identity is initially secret, but he operates mostly in New York city.

One more thing. Abe Sapiens. n the movie, he is a quirky, awkward empath with no fighting capabilities. In the comics, he's an action badass taking down dire threats on his own. He and Hellboy have roughly the same relationship, Hellboy saved him from the Bureau's experimentation, like he saved all sapient "abnormals" the Bureau found, and there is a mutual respect and understanding. In the comic book though, Abe is also Hellboy's disciple and the reason he stays in the Bureau at first. While Hellboy treats him as an equal and his own man, Abe admire him as a mix of a father figure and a moral compass.

Surprised you guys didn't mention how Abe is basically a new character in the movie, since in the comics he's not the quite soft type with a psychic touch, he's a just a fish that with his wits, his fists and sometimes a gun, which makes his the BPRD's second best field agent behind Hellboy

One thing that helped in the original HELLBOY films is that Comic Creator and Artist Mike Mignola worked closely with Del Toro so that the film and characters felt like the comic counterparts. "How do you adapt a comic book" Honestly: you just have to hit 2 key points 1) the characters have to be consistent with their comic persona Not verbatim in terms of aesthetics, but in demeanor and ideals 2) the story should be more of an interpretation of stories in the comics, but not a beat for beat translation EG: zodd always has to be a kryptonian, but the premise of his conflict with superman can waver E.g.: the joker always has to be a psychotic- albeit manipulative- menace who foils Batman; but he doesnt always have to be limited to robbing banks Those elements have to be present to ensure the film honors the source material Now whether or not the movie itself is good still relies on all the technical minutia (Eg: good script, production design, score, etc)

There's a direct line pulled from the comics as well, though who says it is reversed. In the movie, Hellboy says, "That's gonna hurt in the morning." To which Abe replies "It is morning, Red." And Hellboy responds "Good, cause it hurts now." During the Cavendish battle in the comics this dialogue is seen word for word, only its Abe who's hurt and Hellboy who corrects him.

I'd say that BPRD being secret changed the story quite a bit, especially the Golden Army. And Abe seems more general in the movie (probably to distinguish himself from Hellboy). Johann Krauss in Golden Army, on the other hand, is completely different character with the same look and powers (in the BPRD series, the newest member of team learing the ropes. In the movie his the senior member of the BPRD assigned to keep HB inline). Also both his romantic storyline with Liz and a bigger emphasis on the relationship with Bruttenholm, kind ofmake movie HB feel like brooding teenager at times.

They should’ve just make a third Hellboy movie that acts sort of like a reboot-quel. Or not. Just a third movie that’s stripped directly out of the comics and make Ron Perlman’s eye contacts look like what David Harbour is currently wearing.

Mike Mignola (Hellboy creator writer and artist) wrote the script and is involved in every aspect of this new movie. The first movies were good but Mignola's doing an adaptation from the books so it'll deal with heavier themes. We'll still get his stubborn charm and sarcasm but more mature storytelling.

+Scare The Locals ! Wow! That’s awesome and as you said, pretty badass! It’s great that the creator of Hellboy is involved with the new film. I hope that the reboot turns out to be a good film. When my brother and I went to see “Aquaman” a few weeks ago, one of the movie previews we saw was the Hellboy reboot trailer and we thought that it was very interesting. I know that most fans wouldn’t agree, and that’s fine, but from what we were allowed to see for now in the trailer, I think that David Harbour as Hellboy was okay and he looked surprisingly cool.

Am I the only one here who likes the comics, but doesn't care all that much for the movies. Now don't get me wrong, the movies aren't bad, at all, but compared to the comics they're the lesser version. The movies still deserve props though, without them my dad (and through him I) wouldn't have gotten into Hellboy.

  • @Contevent

The movies got me into the comics. If the comics are very, very good stories, I find myselft emotional when looking at the second movie. The struggles of Prince Nuada trying to save the dying races, the visual representation of Hellboy forced to choose his side, it get me. I still prefer their comic book personality, and I prefer Hellboy celibate, but I find the films gives something the comics do not give. Life and Energy. I find that the action in the comics is rather dull because of the unique style that makes them look both incredible and rather stiff. This accentuate the drama of some situation and the horrible majesty of the unfathomable creatures they come across, but it get in the way of the dynamism, be it physical of emotional. One example is Hellboy standing up to the Bureau in order to prevent the homoculous to be experimented on. It is both a touching scene and a powerful one, as it shows his humanity, compassion, and own suffering in the past. Yet I'd rather look again at him and Sapiens getting drunk and singing in the movie because there you can feel the chemistry working, the two marginalized, that big devil and the fishman getting hammered over human problem. That is my personal take on the issue. Speaking of which, I'm off to see that clip again.
