Helios 44m4 58mm f2 | Adapting vintage lens to your Fujifilm camera | Fujifilm X-T4

This is a vintage lens, the Helios 44m4 58mm f2. I bought this lens around 3 years ago, at that time I wasn’t very good at manual focus and at f2 the lens is really soft… I suspect I have bought a bad copy and the lens has been collecting dust. Recently I’ve learned to shoot with a smaller aperture, f4, f5.6 and heard the cinematographer of the new Batman movie use this to shoot some of the car scenes… I know I have to give this lens another try. Here are the video and photo I shot with this lens, I was testing out a fuji recipe but halfway through the shoot it rain very heavily and the warm tone from the recipe doesn’t match the rain so I changed to shooting b&w.

Can you provide all the specifics of how you set up your camera menu for this? I believe there are some lens settings deep in the menu and I'd love to know how you set them up. Thank you.

Hi Ken, beautiful work you got! I am new to photography and I am really into vintage lenses. I have a Fuji XT-4 as well and I would love to know which adapter do you recommend to mount the Helios 44M-4. I noticed you didn't get any swirly effects with the lense is that because of the choice of your adapter? Finally, my favorite shot from what you shared is the phone booth, love the red and warm colors on that, which filter did you used? Thank you so much

Thank you very much! I am happy to meet people that have the same love to vintage lens as myself. I just use a off brand, cheapest adapter from a local store. i think the lack of swirly effects actually is a result of a faulty lens. this year I learnt how to open up lenses and luckily i can find whats wrong with this lens, maybe I will make a video about this soon. the colour should be because of a film recipe, if i remember correctly it is this one: fujixweekly.com/2020/11/10/fujifilm-x100v-film-simulation-recipe-superia-xtra-400/ Enjoy!!

Ken Yu Believe I’m about to shoot with both the 44-4 and the 44-2 + XT3? I found 2 zenit cameras equipped with the helios 44-2 stored with old stuff from my mother.. they need cleaning as their softness is extra softer due to fungus..lets say it’s just “character” haha Great video!

Thank you for the pun 😆, great to hear you found some treasures out of your old stuff. I found it really fun to shoot with vintage lenses, hope you will have a good time shooting with them, despite all the "character" they have, hahaha
