The Magic of Shooting Vintage Film Lenses with Fujifilm

Фильм және анимация

I discover the magic of using a vintage Helios 44M-4 lens on my Fujifilm XT3 out doing street photography.
Street photography images were shot on the XT3 using the Helios 44M-4. All film footage was captured on XT3. All images are edited in Adobe Lightroom CC.

I had no idea when I bought that camera and lens back in the early 80’s that it would ever take the most beautiful photos and videos. But in your talented hands you have created pure art with it. Thanks so much for bringing it back to life and I hope you use it for many years to come ❤

When I first got into Photography after buying my my Lumix GX80 six years ago I was soon tempted into buying primes, and more gear in general. But modern lenses were just too expensive for me, so I soon came across vintage lenses. eBay got hit hard. Old Olympus, Pentax, and canon FD glass was so cheap. I still have my canon FD lenses and enjoy using them every now and then. They have a character like no other. I now use on my Fuji xt2 aswell. Lens technology hasn't really come on very much in the last fifty years cos some of this old kit is just as good as most modern lenses. Glad you're having fun with it. But be warned, it's a rabbit hole you're looking into.

Focus peaking makes hitting focus quickly with a manual lens an absolute dream. You can even see focus approaching your subject as you turn the dial and you can see DoF.

one of my favourite vintage lenses is the jupiter 37A. Super sharp and loads of character. The other one is the CZJ Flektogon, the 35mm f 2.4. Then the Helios.

Another gorgeous video Rich! At Christmas, I had to sell my FujiFilm lenses cos I was short on cash and I ended up buying a £20 adapter to use my Canon FD lenses from my Canon AE-1 on my FujiFilm XT3. As someone who mainly shoots film and often avoids digital, I've got to say it's made the digital shooting experience so much more fulfilling and familiar. The results, in my opinion, are better than the expensive autofocus lenses I was using, and add more of the character I like. I didn't even think to use it on video as I thought there'd be issues focusing on movement, but after seeing this footage in your video I can't wait to have a play. Thanks as always for the inspiration brother xx

Beautiful. I highly recommend the Minolta MD lenses. Totally under the radar and still relatively affordable. The build quality of those is insanely good and the images, specially videos, in combination with modern sensors are unmatched. Also the Pentax K lenses are great. But watch out for oily blades and stuck mechanics on those. I personally would skip Olympus OM glass, in my opinion they don’t have that magic effect. There are radioactive lenses, recognizable by the yellowed glass. The glass contains thorium. You can mitigate the discoloration with UV light, but keep in mind that it can affect the white balance if not treated adequately. I own the Fuji XF´s 18mm, 23mm, 33mm, 56mm and 90mm primes, all f1.4 LM´s but when it comes to video I only use my old lenses.

A great video. I enjoyed hearing your perspective on using vintage lenses. It definitely hit home as I am getting more and more into them as well, and I have built a pretty good collection of lenses for my X-T3 and X-S10 bodies. Right now I have a bunch of Takumar lenses, which are outstanding and something you may want to look into. I have a 35 f2, a 55 1.8, an 85 1.9, and a 135 f3.5. All of these lenses are in pristine condition and produce really nice images. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject.

I own one of those Helios. The 44-2 MMZ Belomo. What a lens. I don’t use it much because I find it too narrow at my Fujifilm. It’s almost a 90mm but magnificent rendering and colors. May I suggest a gem for street photography and more wide (I guess one of the widest vintage lenses), the SMC Takumar 24mm f/3.5, more close to 35mm (full frame equivalent) and also a joy to use. Really liked the video. Congratulations
