Ah, who needs a height/velocity safety envelope or twin engines for safety/redundancy? A couple of feet above the ground, and one engine, are all ya need to haul ass in a whirlybird.

In forward flight disc ( blades turning ) is acting more like a wing. The air is rushing through it in from the top in front of the disk and down through the disk more diagonal to the ground than when in a hover when it is blowing straight down. There is very little down wash of air in forward flight. Hope that answers your question
