    This was a very handy tutorial and it helped me through this installation. Highly recommend this video. A few notes that aren't explicit in this video for anyone following this tutorial: 1) The cutter rotate lock plate removed at 2:05 does not work on the new cutter head and does not need to be reinstalled. Just don't be an idiot and turn the machine on when the dust cover has been removed. 2) At 3:02 he removes a washer and there is a little piece of metal (a key?) that is also there. Watch out and don't lose it! 3) At 3:08 he says "4 screws", there are only 3. 4) At 3:28, there is also a washer on that right post that you need to watch out for. He tells at 4:22 to put it back on, but he doesn't mention it when it comes off. Don't let it get lost. 5) I'm not entirely sure the snap ring at 3:45 actually needs to be removed. I did anyway, but it is a pain and another commenter mentioned you don't need to remove it. 6) There is no instruction on HOW to remove the helical head referenced at 3:53. Depending on the age of your planer, it might be on there pretty tight. I used some lubricant and it helped a lot. 7) If you wanted to reinstall the cutter rotate lock plate (even though it won't serve any purpose other than to keep your parts together), then before the step at 3:58 is the time to do it! 8) At 5:07 he says to ensure the belt is seated correctly on top and bottom pulley. You can access the top pulley to make sure it is there by giving just a quarter-twist on that screw on the left side of the little vent plate in the top-right of the screen. So these are all little things that weren't mentioned explicitly but I was able to get through it anyway. But if you want to add them to you step-by-step, it may fill in a couple of gaps.

    It seems i'm in the minority here. First, it could be that, after 60 years of woodworking, I'm deaf. To me there was NOT an appreciable difference in noise level. And shame on me, I should have taken noise measurements "before and after"; but under my headset, imperceptible difference. Second, before wrapping things up, I ran some SYP, white oak, gum, and poplar thru; I couldn't tell the difference! It may have been that the knives I'd been using were as sharp as new or the knives on a Shelix are better. And, as someone commented incorrectly, the choice of cutter head has no influence on snipe, which is caused by a totally unrelated mechanism. In summary, my $500 would have been better spent on a few nice boards of sapele. And the two hours on making a half dozen bluebirds houses.

    Just a heads up, I just got my Luxe cut three a couple days ago and they now ship with the cutterhead removed and they didn’t do that before. Even the website when I ordered said they did not come that way. But… There was an RMA form inside and it looked like mine had been dropped so it could’ve been a return. the threads were screwed up on the shaft and I intend on contacting the company tomorrow. I was able to clear the threads using the shaft nut and some lubricant.

I was accidentally sent a head that had been sent in for return and it wasn’t supposed to be sent out. They immediately sent me a new head. All new, cutters installed and everything wrapped in plastic, foam, cardboard, and crated. I would definitely use them again if I needed a new head for something. 5 stars ⭐️

    I installed the same cutting head and have some issues. I find that I can't take cuts as deep as I could with the OEM 3-blade setup. I generally take small passes anyway, but I've been tripping my wall breaker running 10" wide walnut at 1/32" of a cut. I didn't trip the breaker running similar material at a similar and deeper cut with the 3-blade. The material feed is also much slower while passing through as compared to the OEM. Most of this makes sense I guess, but are you running into similar issues?

  • @TwoBitWoodworks

    I definitely have run into those issues before. I would suggest only using the planet on a designated 20amp circuit. I’ve noticed that when I use it on anything other than that, it will eventually trip the breaker.

    You are correct, the new helical won't do deep cuts unless you have more powerful planer. Just do several shallow passes.. you get an exceptional smooth surface

    That's the Rockler dust collector system. I have a standing unit that uses that same 4" hose and connector. It does require that you attach an adaptor to every machine in order to fit to the push-on connector, but it is convenient for a small shop where you only have one dust collector to service many machines.

    Among several oversights, it should be mentioned that [a] when putting things back together, you'll see things that weren't shown during the tear down; [b] you need to raise the head before beginning; [c] the snap ring at the far [smaller] end does not have to be removed ... which was a good thig for me because neither of my snap ring tools nor any of my three needle nose pliers could remove it and I wasn't about to spend a hundred buck on a set that might.

  • @rosswines

    @rosswines

    Жыл бұрын

    I believe it IS best to remove the C clip from the smaller bearing. When taken out I can get a piece of35mm diameter wood dowel to fill the whole hole to put pressure on the out side race ring of the bearing rather than pressure the inner ring and stress the ball bearing race if the C clip wasn't removed. It was really easy anyway, just using long needle nose pliers that I used also for c clip on the larger bearing. I used a larger box socket to hit on with wooden mallet (home brew) to reinstall the larger bearing. If you hit the threaded end of the axle of the new cutter instead of applying pressure to the outer ring of the larger bearing you risk sliding the larger bearing on the axle, doing so you will set the smaller bearing against its C clip, but notice the larger bearing hasn't gone in far enough to engage its C clip!

    Looking more closely the head end had a hex 6mm head.. perfect. Small 6mm box socket made light work of it. Another tip short length 35mm HD dowel made easy work to knock out old cutter from gear box size. Those Circ clips or snap rings easy to remove using long pointy pliers. My circlip piers were useless and frustrating as they kept slipping off when went to pull out the clip. Long fine pointy pliers having fine groves at tips didn't loss grip

    Man, Dewalt 735 is already a 600$ + tool, then you toss a $500 blade on there, I'd rethink this whole idea and look to go with a planer that already has the helical in there.

    @@TwoBitWoodworks I get it. I've made some expensive mistakes. If I already had a planer (I don't, I have to constantly go to someone else), I'd consider the blade too. If I was just starting out and needed a planer, that would be different. However with that said, I'm seriously considering buying the 735 and the a helical (lol) because, I keep shopping around and it' either a 13 or 15" or it's a cnc or wide sand machine (that I have to pay time on). We just can't win in this space.

    It's best in class! Bigger more powerful need bigger AC power supply. More space to use and much more $$$$ to buy. Yeah go for it if that is what you need. Recommend Rikon , Oltre or Sicar. Bigger machines seem to have combo planer and thicknesses. Set you back about 3-4 times price for dewalt 735

    @@rosswines I will say that after having 735 for about 5 months now (I bought shortly after I commented) the 3 knives are fine so far. I get little micro lines on my wood, but once I sand from 80 to 120 to 180 sometimes 220 it's gone. The #2 speed (dimensioning) is very fine finish already. The 1 is hard to tell the difference (finishing cutting). If / when I actually make enough money to justify the upgrade I will. I can see pros will spend $$$$ on tools if it's truly streamline their shop. An example is I bought a Wen track saw + Track, all I do is cut straight 90's and for that - once the track is calibrated (with an 8 foot level) it's been dead on for glue joints. Cutting at a 45 the Wen is a piece of trash and flexes more than a body builder in the Mr Universe contest. However, if you push from behind and hold it steady and everything is set up correctly it's perfect. Would I want the festool track? Yes of course lol, but I could buy a planer and a track saw for price of one tool and unless I justify the upgrade, it's going to be a while.
