so annoying every time i cant remember what her name I try looking up the person they ripped off betty boop from and that baby esther bs comes up. i hate the internet. Literally the only reason she was brought up was to discredit helen kanes lawsuit against the creators of the character so they didnt have to pay her for stealing her likeness which everyone knew they did. They found several obscure artists to show that the characteristics of betty boop were common and were not invented by helen kane. no part of Baby Esther is present in betty boop or helen kanes work. The internet then shares photos of black women cosplaying as Helen Kane along with captions claiming that Helen Kane ripped off Baby Esther. Meanwhile theres not any recording of Baby Esther as a child performer or any real photos of her. Not even the one photo that isnt a betty boop cosplayet is baby esther its a different adult singer of the same name that had nothing to do with the manufactured controversy.

I know what you mean. I think people are annoyed because of the lawsuit from Helen. I am sick of seeing videos where all you see is comments about how she'd copied so and so too. In jobs people are inspired by those who came before them. So Why can't people just appreciate the talent and enjoy the music.

@@Thewatcher10000 I’m not sure if this is for real, but I think that it’s because in todays society we recognize black people as more impoimportant figures than we did back then, and I also contributed to the fact that nobody even knows who Helen Kane is nowadays sadly. But I don’t know WHY THAT is. Honestly…🙄 But you are right it does not make any sense as to why this even began in the first place, but that’s just my take on it.

After Helen Kane sued Fleischer for using a cartoon version of her, Fleischer showed that numerous other people were also imitating Helen Kane, and Kane made no effort to sue any of them. One of the various HELEN KANE IMPERSONATORS was a performer called Esther Jones. It is surreal how this has been twisted and distorted in the 21st century...

She copied her style in “ I wanna be loved by you” which is the song that made her famous. I don’t know where you’re getting your dates from but there’s proof that Kane took this style from Baby Esther which is why she lost her lawsuit.

thats not dramatic enough. the way people try to spin it is as if it was baby esther that sued helen for copying her. and now the top result for who betty boop was based on shows baby esther with a photo of a woman who wasnt even baby esther. in the end the lawyers won and Helen Kane recieves no credit.

The woman STOLE from Esther Jones and she had the audacity to sue the creators of Betty Boop, saying that they stole her style, when SHE was the one who stole from a black woman in the 1900’s! But a singer called Irene Franklin had been doing the "Betty Boop voice" since about 1908. In addition, vaudeville singers had been doing what is today called "scatting" since the 19th century. The film of Esther Jones was recorded significantly AFTER Kane was famous. In it, Esther sings three songs that had all earlier been popularized by Kane. Kane's lawyers said the film should be recognized as "a Helen Kane impersonator", and the Judge agreed. The Judge ruled that Esther was "irrelevant, incompetent and immaterial" in the Kane v Fleischer case. It is only far more recently that some people have completely misunderstood what actually happened, and this "Baby Esther" stuff has gone viral. Edit... Here's a 1911 recording from Irene Franklin. Yes, 1911.
