HEL PERFORMANCE OIL COOLER KIT INSTALL! | FOCUS RS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I install the Hel Performance oil cooler kit for MK3 Ford Focus RS!
The parts that Hel Performance make themselves are of the highest quality, as are the sourced parts - Mocal for the sandwich plate and Setrab for the cooler core are well known for being the absolute best available on the market!
I cover the whole installation all the way from removing the bumper to the actual oil cooler install and even throw in a couple of additional details for completeness.
These details are a full oil change which includes draining the old motor oil, replacing the drain plug with a nice new Mountune magnetic drain plug, installing a brand new Ford Motorcraft oil filter, filling up with new Castrol Edge oil and finally doing the oil change reset from inside the cabin!
The idea behind the Hel Performance oil cooler kit for MK3 Ford Focus RS is that under sustained heavy load (such as a track day!), oil temperatures can rise above optimal which can be detrimental to the engine. In order to bring these temperatures down, the oil is routed through the oil cooler which is essentially a heat exchanger fed by cool air at the front of the car. This would not be helpful under normal loads however as the oil needs to be at that optimal temperature - not too cold either - which is why you should always let the oil warm up after firing up the engine before driving hard. That is where the thermostatic sandwich plate comes in.
Made by Mocal, the sandwich plate both provides the take off ports to connect to and from the oil cooler but also is set to only do so after a certain temperature that has been determined to be ideal (92 degrees Celsius) and the rest of the time it simply bypasses the oil cooler and operates much like the car would normally, with the oil going into the oil filter directly!
Hel say:
When one of our employees experienced high oil temps in his own RS, we knew we had to help him develop the ultimate oil cooler kit. After a period of successful testing, it's now available for you to buy.
We knew straight away RS enthusiasts wouldn't want to drill or cut anything to fit an oil cooler, so we 3D scanned the engine bay to find the best solution. As a result, we manufactured a custom aluminium bracket to mount the oil cooler on the crash bar using the OEM mounting points. The cooler then sits in direct air flow behind the top grill, the perfect location for effective cooling.
We based the kit around the popular Swedish-manufactured Setrab Series 6 ProLine oil cooler. The 13 row option gives a great balance between minimising pressure loss while giving very effective cooling.
We've been using Setrab oil coolers for over 10 years without any issues and their performance is unrivalled. There are lots of cheaper imported options available, but none as reliable (there aren't many things worse than having a burst oil cooler!). In fact, we've had reports of front end collisions and the Setrab oil cooler was the only thing that still worked!
This comprehensive kit arrives with preassembled HEL braided hoses and anodised aluminium fittings. These AN10 high flow performance hoses deliver and return oil from the oil cooler to a trusted Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate set at 92°C (197.6°F). We've found the 92°C option gives you the perfect balance between cooling when needed and letting the engine warm up safely. It's also dangerous for the oil to be too cold and the thermostat controls the temperature with precision.
This direct-fit kit offers a safe and reliable cooling system for the iconic RS. It comes complete with easy-to-understand instructions and our technical support team are always happy to answer any questions you may have.

Very informative videos I've loved watching them as I've been planning on getting a MK3 RS. Would you recommend buying one as I've also recently seen a video from BD Performance made about a year ago concerning these engines blowing up/the block cracking and there are also a lot of comments on that video with many people having the same issues with this engine block going bang and slating the engine which has put me off a bit unfortunately. whats your take on that please?

Great video Adam, thinking about adding this to my ST to help with trackday temps! One question, do you not need to prefill the hoses with oil to avoid air in the cooler or does it work itself out first time the thermostat opens?

Hello, it isn't really about temperature drop, it is about maintaining a temperature window so once up to the ideal operating temp, it should remain there no matter how hard you drive and from my experience so far it does the job!
