Definitely repetitive, but Hamrer Hippyer is meant to put the listener in a trance-like state. Seeing them perform this live was amazing and cathartic! Anoana, Norupo, Krigsgaldr, and In Maidjan are probably better entry points for Heilung.

Feels like an odd one to choose for a first introduction to Heilung imo. But that's a much better score than I thought you were going to give!

That's it. Honest and objective. That's why I like you. Heilung (= healing) have many beautiful melodies (basically whenever Maria Franz opens her mouth), but they also are pretty gritty. Some songs go more into the melodic part, some like this one. I'd always start with a more melodious one to get a feeling for them. In the end, gritty or melodious, I'm very perceptive to their music. Their music relaxes me and clears my mind. Thanks for your work (and perseverance :)

Hi David, "Krigsgaldr" or "In Maidjan" from the same concert/ceremony would have been a better first start into Heilung for you. A certain level of repetitiveness is normal for this whole genre, but I guess "Hamrer Hippyer" is a track for the more advanced hardcore fans. Appreciate your honesty.

Saw Heilung live in January this year and as a live experience it's amazing to see and feel. Bit of info, the 3 main members come from Germany, Denmark and Norway and yes their thing is Amplified Medieval music. All the bones and antlers etc on stage are real and they do include real human bones which apparently causes situations at some airports. The idea of the stage show is actually a "Pagan type" ritual and that was very much how the show went. This actual performance "Lifa" was actually Heilung's first ever live performance and the guy doing the throat singing Kai, I believe it was his first time ever singing on stage. Good honest reaction Mr H, I fully appreciate it wasn't your thing 🙂

Oh my goodness, I was waiting sooo long for your reaction on "Heilung". And now, oh boy..... I do really not understand, how somebody can introduce "Heilung" to you with THIS song. Maria Franz is one of the best female vocalists, I know, with a huge range, which is completely missing here. Hamrer Hippyer is usually played as the last part of the complete ritual. I call it ritual, as you see, not concert. The Lifa "concert" was the first given by Heilung in 2017 after their foundation. Neither Heilung nor the audience from the festival knew how it will work out. In the meantime the band and this ritual part has been re-arranged. Hamrer Hippyer has become now the part of boisterous dancing by the band members, the warriors, the elfs in trance. Way different to this here, more entertaining and joyful to watch the scenery on stage. There are other parts of the concert which are more interesting from the built-up in the beats, the vocals, the choirs which would have been fit way better as the entrance in Heilung's world. My first reaction on Heilung at all was similar as yours. First reaction "What a bullsh*t" , second reaction "okay" , third reaction "Wow", fourth reaction "mesmerized", fifth reaction "fascinated and blown away", sixth reaction I bought tickets for their show. Probably you can imagine how I'm suffering, how you are looking for deviations and directions the part will go and your bleeding lip bitten out of desperation. Another reactor on YT called "Heilung" the first heavy metal group in human history. And this is true, but NOT with this part of the ritual. I recommend "In Maidjan", which is the opening ceremony, "Traust", "Krigsgaldr" or the more modern worldly "Anoana", where Maria Frantz can demonstrate what she is able to do vocally. To be honest, I'm disappointed and I feel like seeing a forgiven touchdown to introduce to you. Give them a second try, please.

So many saying you should react to the same three songs that every reactor out there reacts to. I find it refreshing to se someone reacting to some of their less played songs. For a band with over 20 songs, when watching KZread reactors, you get the impression they only have InMadjan, Krigsgaldr and Alfathirheiti... Personally, I love the repetiveness, and I also love this song, as the vocal stuff is trance-like. This is techno with "viking" instruments :p

This is honestly a song I only got into because I had heard other works by them. Even their most popular reaction song wasn't what got me. It's different, that's for sure, but not their best. I recommend In Maidjjan by them. It's a song fans love and will go to see reactions of, and also shows a lot more of their strengths.

Hello, David. I respectfully ask that you give Heilung another chance. I agree with others that Hamrer Hippyer is an offbeat place to start exploring their sound. Try “Anoana” which is their latest, most modern track. It follows a more traditional song pattern but it’s still very atmospheric, spellbinding and primal.

Ger is an ancient word ( maybe old latin) for a Kind of Spear, so German ( nothing to do with Germany today) means man with a spear, its discribes ( for the Roman Empire) all tribes/clans with the old middle and north european culture and religion.

I respect your opinion on this, David and its all fair criticism. To me, it's music to lose yourself in so the repetitiveness doesn't bother me. There are other songs of theirs that have more to chew on if you get around to it. Always love the brutally honest reactions!

Acquaintance with the ancient song traditions of European ancestors turned out to be not very exciting for DH. At the same time, the genre of European ethnomusicology in the Scandinavian format is quite interesting. And acquaintance with this music should undoubtedly begin with the creativity of the Wardruna group. There are wonderful vocalizations, ancient instruments, pagan traditions, and all together it's not boring, but very cute.

I like Heilung quite a bit and own their CD's and the Blu-ray. They have some tracks that I actually love, but this is certainly not one of them. I personally don't mind the repetition that much, this kind of music is meant to be music that you can relax to and space out, but the first part was a bit long for me as well. I probably haven't listened enough to their CD's because I didn't recognize it actually, but I have to be in the mood for this kind of music so I don't listen to it that often. I also prefer Wardruna in this genre over Heilung because they have poems on their albums and I am not that much into those. They call their music "amplified history from early medieval northern Europe" as they use traditional instruments with some electronic instruments/help. They use old texts from Germanic people and people from the Iron Age and Viking Age and use them for their songs. Their instruments and outfits are all handmade. The 3 bandmembers (the 3 vocalists) come from Germany, Denmark and Norway. The rest are touring musicians.

I wouldn't say I'm an avid Heilung fan but I have watched some songs from this concert and have a couple songs on my "other sh!t" playlist. And this is the most boring one over heard yet. Just being honest. I can't remember the name right now but the first song I heard by them blew me away so I hope you react to more in the future, because I feel this is not representative of what they can achieve

Heilung has some really good songs...this song is quite possibly the most shit song ever. this is like being introduced to Babymetal with Yui singing Chokotto Love...no, actually with Chokotto Love, at least there was a mild amusement of Yui singing. Whomever chose this I think went for complexity over enjoyment. For real though. Heilung has really cool stuff like Norupo video which is extremely good mood music

Firstly - I've seen you biting your lip on a number of occasions during reactions - but I've never seen you actually draw blood before ! I think you have to suspend your normal view of " a song " and look at this as a spiritual experience rather than a purely musical one . Although it is steeped in Nordic / Germanic folklore I got hints of Native American sounds , as you said a whiff of Gregorian chant and all the while an undercurrent of ENIGMA It's certainly " different "
