#HeGetsUs

The #HeGetsUs campaign has been a hot topic as a result of a #SuperBowlLVII commercial. This podcast was a live conversation I hosted on Facebook with Drs. Robert Gagnon and Steve Blakemore about their thoughts concerning this commercial and the messages conveyed through it.

As soon as you go to their website, they say, “The night before he died, Jesus washed the feet of his friends and enemies.” This is a lie. They were his disciples only, his followers. There were no other “friends” present. Judas had not betrayed Jesus yet, so he was not his enemy. Even if Judas is conceded as an enemy, he is only one. So their statement is still a lie.

Yeah Jesus gets us. That is why he said ye must be born again because you have an ungodly nature that loves sin and you need a new one born by the spirit of God that loves righteousness, one that loves walking in the light as he is in the light. But that wasn't in the ad.

I’m struggling with this. It’s an ad, it’s trying to stir curiosity in Jesus. It’s highlighting some often forgotten features of Jesus. You can’t expect the ad to be a dry theology lesson that covers every single aspect of Salvation. I don’t know how you can knock someone trying to do evangelism. It’s a great thing. I live in Australia and we’re further post Christian than you, and before people will look at the gospel you have to show them that Christianity isn’t some sexist, racist, uncaring hate group. People have to see the attractiveness of Jesus before they will hear the whole gospel. But when we run down these adds to me we’re just confirming the stereotype that we are closed small minded and mean. I hope all the critics of this ad are giving as much money and effort towards evangelising the unreached as the people who made the ad are. And just for the record, it is part of the gospel, Hebrews says we have a high priest who ‘gets us’ he was like us in every way. That’s good news.

Ugh I can’t watch this. I’m a conservative orthodox Christian but come on. Did Jesus say to Zacchaeus ‘come down from the tree and repent’? Did he give him the whole gospel before eating with him? Do we have the same Bible? It seems to me Jesus was always eating with sinners and acting with incredible love first and it was that grace shown that led to repentance. And Shame on Paul for not telling the Athenians to ‘repent’! He should have led with that. What was all that nonsense about statues and quoting Greek poets.

Jesus' building of relationships with sinners was for the specific purpose of bringing them to repentance. Indeed, this was his explicit mission statement. See Matthew 9:12-13; Mark 2:17; Luke 5:31-32. Jesus' entire message can be summarized as one of calling people to repentance and faith in the Gospel (Mark 1:15). So, yes, Zacchaeus would have heard this message either from Jesus directly, or would have heard indirectly from others that this was the essence of the message that Jesus was preaching. The example of Zacchaeus is responsive to Jesus' message because he confesses that he has financially exploited others, is contrite about it, and strives to make things right, which are all the true fruit of repentance. Zacchaeus demonstrates his repentance by offering half of his belongings to the poor and paying back four times as much to anyone he had cheated, which is far more than even the OT law required (Numbers 5:6-7).

No one’s denying the need for repentance, the question is do you have to lead with that and include it in every encounter or can you start with Jesus was amazing and not what you think. I gave the example of Jesus with Zacchaeus and Paul in Athens because in both of those cases they started with love and friendship. Repentance came but they didn’t start there. Just like the ad they started with something else. So it’s not fair to criticise the ad unless we want to criticise Jesus and Paul too. If you’re a super successful evangelist who starts every conversation with ‘repent’ then go for gold, but it’s not the only way evangelism is done
