    Blackpowder benefits greatly from barrel length. Compare to smokeless .45 Auto, which gains progressively less after about 8" of barrel or so, most common 230gr loads gaining pretty little from going up to 16"

    A very neat experience. I too was surprised at the velocity Gail out of the rifle. With only 25 grains you would think it would burn up pretty fast with all the resistance pushing all that lead.

    Those velocities are better than I expected (I was expecting high 500s to low 600s out of the pistol and around 800 out of the rifle). High 600s out of the pistol and almost 900 out of the rifle makes for some very respectable energy numbers.

    So unorthodox isn't the words I use. I look at it as thinking outside the box. The ability to supplement if the need presents itself is useful knowledge. Now can't and won't disagree with the caution of testing the open top conversions. However I am going affirm my point from the last video, and this is only relevant to the Walker as I haven't a dragoon for measurements. The extra length of the walker cylinder theoretically is the same as an long throat in a rifle chamber, or free bore. Free bore functions as case capacity for some oldtimer like me who have used free bore sometimes for better accuracy, and overall performance. Limited only by the length of a magazine, (not an issue with single shots, or walker in this case) The point of contact of the ojive to rifling, compensate for that( again shouldn't be an issue with the Walker with the added space of the forcing cone of the barrel). The last limitation is sufficient setting depth/contact for a stable bullet to case stability. Case in point I own a single shot 30-30 that the throat is so long tha a 150 nosler partition doesn't reach the lands with the bullet barely in the case neck. Let's just say she shoots way faster than a 30-30 should and no pressure signs. In fact I'm Ackley improving it currently. Back to the Walker, I am working with a acquaintance to convert my Walker to 45-55 walker, as well doing the same thing to a contender. Though my target bullet weights are for 260-325 grains for testing. I hope this rambling blind man is making some sense. Mountain man

    405gr at 900fps is pretty damn hefty, shy of twice the weight of .45 Auto at slightly higher speed. If it was smokeless (or you didn't mind the cleaning), it'd play well with a suppressor.

    Garrett Cartridges runs a 405gr load in .45 Colt+p. They rate them 1250 fps from 7.5-inch Redhawk. No idea what they have cooked up for powder type but I'm sure they aren't just crushing the snot out of primers either. So little information on KZread using Garrett's stuff. They also say 4-inch barrel is equivalent to the old Springfield Trapdoor .45-70 ballistics in this load. Wild.

    Black powder pistol sight heights. They recoil before the bullet leaves the muzzle. That makes them hit high. If you set a pistol on sand bags and sight down the side of the bore you will see that the high front sight blade allows for recoil. It just doesn't allow for your high power loads. 45-70spl.

    Heavy bullets impact higher from handguns. The recoil generated causes the bullet to exit when the barrel is at an angle that is more elevated than if the bullet was lighter. The recoil of a lighter bullet can be increased by pushing it faster, but then it also exists the muzzle faster, making the impact point nearly the same as the slower, same weight projectile. I think it is a function of all the movable joints of the shooter. From a rigid machine rest it wouldn't show up as it does from a hand held pistol.

  • @bobrees4363
    @bobrees4363 Жыл бұрын

    Heavy than "normal" bullets tend to shoot very high from handguns. I tried some 122 grain RNFP from my Ruger SSM in .32 H&R Magnum, and while they gave the tightest group I have ever fired from any revolver; to use them effectively, I would need a taller front sight. On the order of 1/8" higher.

Wheel weights are harder lead but make great lead balls. Try pouring and shooting some of these and see the difference.

    On the chart of smokeless powder burn rates I wonder where black powder fits in. Probably really slow. Explains why longer barrels increase fps. As for the flat primers they at least didn't seem to flow in the primer pockets. In the Marlin locked breech did the primers show the same flatish effect? Edit: on second thought I reckon its hard to equate BP to smokeless because of all the variables. Plus BP is an explosive, and smokeless is a propellant. .

    Novice chiming in. In terms of application, am I correct in assume these would do well as a bedside self defense gun. Across a bedroom kind of distance and hitting like a freight train with very little worry of over penetration? The speeds are in the neighborhood of a cheap to decent air gun, but tossing a lot more weight. High and low wouldn't matter much at the expected distance. Top, bottom or center lung should leave them gasping any way you slice it.

    I would have bet good money on the bullets being too heavy (long) and too slow to be stabilized out of any standard 45 colt barrel. Weird. But very cool load! 405 grains at 900 fp/s is a respectable amount of power. Maybe you could even do 450 grainers at 800fp/s out of the rifle.

    I want ask you what you think about using a 185 gr. 45 in 45 long colt. with a load for a 200 gr. load from the book.

    Very interesting project! Your 45-70 short loads in your rifle are about 70 fps faster than what my airforce texan air rifle pushes a 419 grn .457 cast WW slug. Thought you might find the air rifle interesting since it is so close to your rifle’s performance. Thanks for documenting the project & sharing. 457 Texan CF - 640+ FPE Lee 405 Power & Accuracy Test - kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaqHuJOviNzbmto.html

    May only have 400 ftlbs of energy, but I bet the terminal ballistics of you shot a deer at 25 yards would outsize another load running the same ftlbs of energy.

    Well that showedem by golly. I'm guessing you called in a 45-70 wannabe because of the 405 lead? Actually I'm pretty sure of it. Damn good shoot'n my man damn good shoot'n, hell anytime you shoot it's good shoot'n

    I think you’ll be fine in the open tops… I shoot 460 SW out of my uberti walker. But that’s my opinion…. Steels are better then they were in 1860. I ain’t to worried…
