It's always nice to see Chessie at the beginning
I really like the greyhound version
The GN was considering an order for these engines. But when bunker C fuel jumped in price they decided against it. Plus the noise level was a little higher than they wanted especially going through the cascade tunnel.
Been looking forward to your review on these for several days. Well done.

Great video Eric! These locos look very good!
Oh my foam meter broke !! Beautiful & outstanding great job Lionel . Awesome review Eric .
I really love these two. I have my fingers crossed that Lionel bought the tooling for the Railking Union Pacific turbine so that we can get a Lionchief Plus 2.0 version. I also hope they bought the tooling for the Premier Line Little Joe.
Great trains! Equal to comic books, model railroading is the greatest hobby of them all. Facts!!
Great video Eric! Can’t wait for mine to arrive, I ordered #69 but was torn between that and #65. The greyhound looks awesome too!
They look absolutely wonderful and they look like the right farmers very nice addition to your collection
Surprised you didn’t need to redo the roadbed after running those absolute beasts lol! Thanks for sharing!

@@Ericstrains hey Eric what is the difference between these and the Baldwin locomotive?
I have the previous version, 73 and the new one 61. I need to pull out the older one and display them together. Liked the original and I like this one. I had a problem with my new one shorting out but my train store swapped it out. It is pulling 17 pieces of rolling stock and it is not breaking a sweat. Really liked the review, as always.

The Verandas are totally awesome! I got 6 of them! I have all 4 UPs, GN, and the Defence Shark Nose. The Shark Nose IS the coolest looking one. As awesome as they are for pulling power, I still think Lionel should have powered the two end trucks. If space restraints were a factor they could have reached into their parts bin and connected the end trucks with drive shaft and U joints. That's something I may do in the future as a project to just simply add realism to it. The trucks don't pivot too drastically from each other, so I think it's easily doable to connect em via joints and shaft. But otherwise totally awesome locos!! The turbine locos are my favorite locos. I have the M-1 steam turbine with the 4 passenger cars that came with it the first time MTH built them. So of course mine is #300. It costed $1000.00 WITH the passenger cars back then.
Great video Eric. These Veranda’s are beautiful. The Sharknose design like you said is fantastic. I personally would love to get one of those myself. The Sharknose design comes from the World War II Fighter Pilots called the AVG’s (American Volunteer Group) that resigned from the U.S.A.A.C. and worked for the Republic of China Airforce and the Chinese government under Chiang Kai-shek, to fight against the Japanese Empire, and help protect the Burma road out of India into China which was the main artery for supplies for them. They were under the leadership of Claire Lee Chenault. Our government approved 100 Curtis P-40B Warhawk airplanes for the Chinese government, but 1 of them that was being delivered by crate, was accidentally dropped and fell into the water and was ruined by salt water. So 99 planes were delivered. These planes were later nicknamed the Flying Tigers because these pilots painted the Sharknose design onto the front of their airplanes, and the Japanese said these pilots flew like tigers, Flying Tigers, hence the name and design. These pilots went down in history as superior fighter pilot’s against all odds with the Empire of Japan. These AVG’s were drawn back into the U.S.A.A.C. due to the demands from the onset of the war. The AVG’s flew their last mission for the Chinese government on July 4, 1942. This group was disbanded, and replaced by the 23rd Fighter Group. They continued to achieve combat success, and they were able to retain the nose art on their airplanes. It probably is one of he most recognized designs in the world to this day. Lionel proudly is representing this design once again. They did it to another locomotive the RF-16 AA unit locomotives along with a Super Base “B” unit called the US Army Legacy Sharks Set this past year as well. It’s such an ICONIC design. It represents SO much to this country and what it originally stood for. I hope you get this Eric. It would be a wonderful addition to your collection, and honors those that served our country flying these Curtis P-40 Flying Tiger Warbirds.

Great review and content as always! I would love to see a tripleheader of the greyhound scheme turbine with a greyhound FEF 4-8-4 and greyhound 4-6-6-4 Challenger steam locomotives with a matching passenger consist.
Lionel’s GTEL Veranda Turbine’s are impressive! The fantasy units with different color schemes are just as great. I do want to ask something. If Lionel or whoever comes out with an O scale Gen 3 GTEL model in the future, are you interested in getting one?
Good job! I plan on doing a review of the military version and it surprisingly has an air raid siren as one of the horns.
24:04 While not prototypical, that K5LA is beautiful!
Those models look amazing
Those are awesome locomotives!! 9 Pounds of pulling power is a lot of force!!!
I preordered the Alaska version of this beautiful engine, which didn't come in yet apparently. I hope they release it. Looks wonderful

I missed the 2010 die cast ES44 diesels but not this time. I am not ordering Lionel this year as I ordered the Rio Grande, Army, UP Yellow and Greyhound. I hated passing on the GN. I thought about letting the UP Yellow to be replaced by the GN. Tough decision. Great video Eric. I’m out of town and will have to wait a couple more weeks before my dealer will ship to me. So I really appreciate this video Eric!!!

Always nice to see your videos Eric I really enjoy them and I really appreciate the fact that you take the time to point out all of the features on the locomotives. I was wondering if the sounds of the crew talking in-between is coming from the locomotive or if it comes from a train car
Great video Eric! I believe that Mr.Muffins Trains has the US Army version in stock
Wish I had the extra $ when these came out such a Awesome set I loved all the different paint schemes on these too
Cool trains and cat love your videos
I want one now 😄
Love the greyhound awesome train
Great video the engines are very big
Nice presentation Eric. Learned a lot on the fuel. While watching I noticed a rare comparison. Prototype 1948.. The windows look very familiar to the Dutch NS 1200 series . ... Now many wonder on the design origines of that Dutch American. Its not just such as "oh its a Balwin thing".. Watching, careful, The Veranda seems to have a weird (electric) nephew overseas.
I've personally seen number 26 in person and I gotta tell ya, that think is absolutely titanic! It's makes 4014 look like a normal sized engine man. It's nuts!

Extremely impressive. Curious - noticed the smaller marker lights on the front of the veranda are not operational?
Hi Eric, nice vid as usual ,do the cabs of the real veranda turbine train engines hang out to the sides around curves like the model engines?
Awesome
I will bet you have some sort of large storage area for all the empty boxes for all the loco's and rail cars. I would imagine you keep them organized too.
That thing really talks I like the crew sounds..I've got a question I don't have Lionel but my friend does he has the legacy remote but don't know how to change bell and whistle sounds nor crew talk how do you do this can you tell me so I can explain to him..he has a Conrail premier engine big one..??
Hi Eric, Really enjoyed this video. I have the Army version on the way. I am running o84 curves and really hope it navigates portalsOK, as I really do not want to sell. Also, really liked history at beginning. Did not know GE was involved in design. Or yhat it went back to 1950 era.
@liamroggenkamp
2 жыл бұрын
GE’s locomotive exploits actually go back even further to 1939 when they built a pair of Steam Turbine Electric Locomotives, also for Union Pacific. Although technologically advanced, these locos had many problems and were scrapped in 1943.

Very nice would like 2 get the army version with the shark mouth front end
Thank you for showing this veranda. The history is very interesting. Did not know any of this. I am concern in how you pick this engine up by the shell instead by the fram. I have done this on some MTH engines and the plastic studs that the screw go into broke off. Hope that is ot your experience. JH
Eric if you are still looking for a DOD legacy veranda you can try Nicholas Smith in Broomall, PA
Awesome video and beautiful setup! I wonder if they make an o scale “Big Blow” I know they have it in HO. Thoughts anyone?

You had 2 locomotives that beat out this turbine in terms of pulling power, those being one of Lionels orange belly 4-8-4 Greenbrier and a Union Pacific 4-12-4 9000 class, both having a pulling power of 5 lbs 5 oz.
@ericstrains how do you test the pulling power of locomotives?
Nice 😀 we also have the same first name 😀
I would love to see a video featuring your 1218 Class A when it arrives!

Hey, Eric! I love your videos! Can you do a segment about removing shells? I want to remove my Mohawk shell (and others) and replace smoke batting but it's a daunting task. I have done it on two locomotives but my by bigger engines are difficult. Any help and advice would be appreciated. I love your layout and advice!!!!
@Ericstrains
Жыл бұрын
I’ve removed shells in several videos but I’ve never done a specific video for it. Not a bad idea.
Heavy Metal 🤘🚂🤘
Very nice, if they could figure out how to semi-scale it down (shorten the body, maybe just two trucks instead of four) I'd love one in the greyhound scheme.
Are the 2 bell sounds the bells coming from the 2 different engines? Or is it the bell coming from the engine and the tender.. because they’re definitely ringing at different speeds.
How do you measure Pulling power? How does it work?
Holy pulling power Batman!
You should do horn 4. That's the horn that most of the dash 9s have
I was just on eBay looking for an Ho version of these and found the Armed Forces one for $1600-$1700. I’m guessing that’s the MSRP. I’d just grab a used PS1 MTH for an o scale version, but that’s just for price.
6:31 It’s the Illinois Railway Museum!
I would run not walk to get the D.O.D. version. They are almost sold out everywhere!
Hello please may I know how much it cost for Union Pacific Veranda Turbine # 65 thanks
Great video, nice engine. I ordered the military 1941 version and received it February 21. Opened up the box, started to unwrap the plastic and a screw fell out. Oh no, what this? Upon further investigation I saw that the screw that fell out was supposed to be holding on one of the drive trucks. Then I inspected some more and noticed that the worm gear and drive gear were damaged. I'm not the only customer that has had this problem. These engine are a fair amount of money only to find out that they don't work. I'm not a happy customer!
Be very cool to see Lionel make the UP GTEL 8,500 hp locomotive
Not going to lie, That US Army paint looks amazing.

I have seen X-26 Union Pacific Veranda Turbine train in real life. 😁
Other fantasy road names that would look good on these: Santa Fe (Warbonnet) Canadian Pacific Chessie System Norfolk and Western Chicago and North Western Northern Pacific Lackawanna PS. Yes, I'm aware that only Union Pacific ever used gas turbines. Although SP, GN, and D&RGW did take a look at them yet rejected them.

Isnt this also the locomotive that if left idling under a overpass for more than 20 seconds, it would melt the asphalt?

Your UP Turbines are really nice but as far as I’m concerned the nicest one of all these Turbines is definitely the US Army with all the cool sounds like the air raid siren 🚨
You think Lionel will re-release these again anytime soon? I didnt get 1 last time
That smoke must fill up the basement pretty quick...

You were lucky you had no damage on 2 of them. I bought the army version and the front powered truck was off the wormgear and screws and other pieces were in the bottom of the plastic wrap along with the Styrofoam nubs on the bottom of the bottom of the trucks that had broken off from fellow express beaten the heck out of the Box on the way here so Lionel is sending me a call tag to have it fixed I'll get it back in about 6 weeks
