I built the dragline that Aaron was standing in front of when he was describing the bucketwheel. The dragline was assembled and welded together in 1975 to 1977 on the syncrude site.

Back in early 2000's I work for a construction company and spent a year and a half working in Fort McMurry renovating the Dr. Karl A Clark Elementary school. According to the kids and teachers their school was very important because Karl A Clark was the one that came up with how to extract the tar from the sand with hot water and steam. We were all taken on a guided tour of mine. I grew up in a coal mining town and had been around massive equipment since I was little. I don't care who you are or how old you get standing next to equipment like this blows your mind.

About cold starting: A lot of trucks and equipment in Canada use Webasto or Espar diesel coolant heaters to maintain temperature at 160F. I think they have adapters for the coolant to circulate thru the hydraulic tanks as well or it’s manufactured into the tank. Using synthetic engine oil in the winter also makes a huge difference.

Most of the iron does not get shut off. As mechanics go to repairs often the equipment is covered in a parachute and tow behind frost fighters (gensets with diesel fire indirect heaters. Millions of BTU) Are used to keep everything warm. You can walk around in a t-shirt inside and -40 outside.

We got the bid to straighten it out and re-finish it, one of my favourite projects from that job!

This Aaron wishes he was more like you. You’re just cool and speak with honesty and a nice tone. The production quality from you all is outstanding. I found you by chance, and although I’m not in the industry I love machines and learning about it all. Every video feels fun and informative, and it can be a challenge to get that blended well. You guys do it brilliantly. Since you asked, as unlikely as it may be, I hope one of the countries you can hit up is Romania; because it’s beautiful, because there’s industrial history I know nothing about and would love to learn from you.

Good to see you in Canada Aaron , enjoy your visit and don’t believe any of the negative remarks that some have about the oil sands projects. Did you know that since they started these operations that the oil quit migrating into the river and flowing out into the ocean in witch it has done in the past before these projects. That alone should be told to anyone how thinks these projects are not good .

Such excavators (bucket wheel) work in Germany and Poland, Krupp I believe. One in Poland is working in open pit brown coal in Belchatow (Kleszczow), biggest open pit mine in Europe. Other one in Germany is bigger I think.

Finning Cat is the largest Cat dealer in North America, because they cover all Canada. I work for Holt Cat, the second biggest dealer. Crazy part is we are one of 4 Cat dealerships in Texas! HOLT CAT! 😁
