This was my exact problem. Tube was clean and the switch would open and close. Wiggled a piece of wire into the base, reconnected the tube and started working again. KZread to the rescue again.

Great case! I was scammed by a "good" contractor, who told me that I need a new control board. Actually, it's the blockage of the hose to pressure switch. He charged me $600 to replace the board, AND he cleared the blockage of the hose. He wanted to take the old control board away, but I refused. I later on figured out the board was good because I put the old board on and it worked! He never answer my call after that. I also heard that he scammed a lot of people around locally.

They all do it. The HVAC industry is one of the most corrupt out there. Better yet, just call your gas supplier first. Their calls are free and are part of your regular billing. I'm with Atco Gas, they would have cleared the blockage for free.

Yes they all do it SCAM people. One company s technician charged me $300 dollars for a capacitor. Probably goes for $5 dollars and probably didn’t need it. This was during a seasonal maintenance. It’s how much they can scam .

@@timcat1004our gas company doesn’t do any of that. They came out for free and checked that gas was coming to the house. He said they aren’t trained in HVAC but he tried to help. I e done all these steps except the pin. I’m going to try blowing everything out again but with a vacuum or air and see if that does it…

Thank you Leo. Thought that the pressure switch was the culprit and replacement the remedy, but after watching your video, and clearing the flow path to the pressure switch, Viola! The furnace is operating normally. I literally couldn't have done this without your step-by-step description of the potential causes of the a faulty pressure switch. All for the cost of a paper clip and 20 minutes of my time. Doubly glad for having seen your video, because I now think that even with a new pressure switch in hand, the furnace still would not have fired up. I'm now inspired to do more work myself and clean the fan/blower housing of dust and replace the fault/wear prone parts. Thank you again.

If the jumper is in place when you turn on the power you will get an error code. The pressure switch must be seen to be contacts open at the start of the sequence. It's actually the first step in the sequence of ignition and it prevents anyone from bypassing the pressure switch which is a safety switch that informs the circuit board that the vent motor is turning and that the venting is free of obstructions. Bypassing the pressure switch will give you one cycle. Once the thermostat is satisfied it will not start again until the bypass is removed. This prevents a wayward technician from killing his customers by trying to be a nice guy by circumventing a safety switch. By inserting a wire in the vent motor port you cleared the rust or scale that was blocking the orifice. Testing a pressure switch should be done with an inline manometer. This will determine if the vent motor is delivering sufficient vacuum to satisfy the pressure switch setting in wc. Very good tutorial for anyone who has a pressure switch error code just be mindful that the pressure switch is a very reliable component and the cause of the problem is usually something else... rusted vent motor blower fins, weak blower motor capacitor, blocked venting, etc.

When we taught this to our students one of the faults we deliberately installed in a furnace was to block the vent motor port much like you encountered. By splicing in a digital manometer the technician can see precisely what pressure the vent motor is delivering to the pressure switch. Testing a pressure switch by sucking on it is not representative of real world conditions. A small tear in the diaphragm can be easily missed as lungs can develop a much stronger vacuum than the vent motor. We stress that while a pressure switch can fail it is a safety and therefore inherently reliable. Safeties usually trip when an underlying condition exists. You demonstrated a very good troubleshooting aptitude and found your problem. Always good to have a happy wife.

  • @Remodelsbyleo

Jim thank you for more knowledge! It makes absolute sense to test the switch with a manometer but most people probably don’t even know what it is. You make a very solid point that the lungs can develop more pressure than the switch and some diaphragm issues can be overlooked by this mechanical “test”. And it makes sense that the switches, being a safety device, are reliable units. My thought was that if you don’t hear the clicking, then it’s an indication that the switch is damaged inside more than just a crack in the diaphragm. You bring back great memories of discussing things with my college professors who often elaborated on things in great detail so I could understand, in depth, the concepts and mechanisms. It’s a pleasure to chat with a knowledgeable individual like yourself 🙏🏼 thank you! Happy holidays to you and your family!

Just what you did, I found one of the nipples is blocked with maybe a gunk or something. I used small nail to push that and cleaned the small hole, put back the hose. I turned the thermostat on, ignition glowed and there's the flame! Thanks lot Leo. Power on!

this video saved me $100's avoiding a service tech. I thought it was the flame sensor went bad. Ordered a new one and it did not keep burners going. The next step was learned from this video. I took the hose off pressure switch and blew into it to make clicking sound. Once I took hose off the nipple that goes in the inducer motor fan housing. There was a noticeable blockage of crap in the nipple. Took a wire and shoved it in and also blew thru hose into housing. After that, furnace burners kept working and heating the house once again. This video helped troubleshoot my furnace problem!!!!!!

I live in Atlanta and the furnace in my attic doesn't get much work until late in the year and I don't notice that it is not working until it gets really cold. This video got me up and running in about 15 minutes! No need to bypass the pressure switch. Checking the tube for obstruction, exercising the pressure switch diaphragm and inserting a wire in the vent motor port to clear rust or scale was a great idea and seems to cover all the bases when the pressure switch is throwing a code letting you know its stuck in the closed position. If that doesn't work try replacing the pressure switch, they are cheap and easy to replace. If its still not working, checking and potentially changing the capacitor might help. That is the extent of my personal knowledge, if I can't resolve it beyond that, I'm calling a reliable heating and air company and getting a trained technician to help me out. Thank you for the video, the wire in the vent motor port was a new one for me!
